Well it’s either that or take £0.000001 off everyone’s cost per hour. Is it a bit pointless, yes. Getting angry about it seems strange though.

Surely you can see it is quite cynical? Why not give them a half decent quality quilt that won't cost them anything to use and do the same job?

Or a sleeping bag they can use when they're homeless

Because it’s supposed to be for the poorest, where a blanket alone isn’t going to be enough when it’s freezing. It may be cynical, but it might not seem like that to someone that desperately wants and needs something more than a thick bit of cloth.

Oh sorry. A quilt. That’s completely different.

I may be angry because energy companies are making record profits and rather than passing on those profits to customers they are trying to garner a little favour with pointless virtue signalling. I may be angry because the burden for everything is being asked to be paid by salaried workers, rather than asset owners, who by definition, are already wealthy. I may be angry because the system already benefits those that are wealthy and unfairly targets taxes on the poorest. I don't know, maybe I'm being fucking unreasonable?
Maybe I'm angry because I'm sick and tired of a system that punishes people for being poor, old, or sick?

It absolutely is.
Adding additional costs to families that already can't afford to survive isn't helping them.
Having been someone that couldn't afford to have electric for about 50 percent of the time when I was in my first flat I can tell you if someone had offered me an electric blanket I would have thought they were taking the piss.

I am moving into my own flat in a couple of weeks and going through budget for bills etc. I know we are over the winter, but I think that while buying furniture I will buy a Kokatsu table. I reckon it could be the best thing ever for next year, why heat a house (or room) when you can just heat a small area around you. Should save a ton off the electric bill. Anyone ever used one or have any comments? I have seen them in Japan but never actually tried it. I hope to be buying my own flat soon enough, but that essentially looks like heating a small area under a table. That sounds depressing. Are you planning on sleeping on the floor?

More for sitting around relaxing, instead of sitting on sofa in a warm room, sit more reclined and use it. I usually sit on the floor anyway as I find it more comfortable so the style suits. odditymall.com/japanese-heated-kotatsu-tableI never heat my bedroom anyway, I like a cold room with a warm duvet, this is just for the lounge.

I've always complained about the way Japanese homes are entirely un-insulated and so they're freezing in winter and boiling in summer, except for the one room/kotatsu where they have some heating/cooling going. I've always missed having proper central heating. But it does sound like energy prices might make things in the UK a bit more like in Japan, as it's going to get prohibitively expensive to heat entire houses, even with the much better insulation.

I had a Japanese ex who was extremely critical of them and who actively tried to avoid going back to see her parents in the winter purely because of how miserable it was. She was of the opinion that central heating was one of the greatest inventions ever. Never used one personally, but I'm presuming it'd be similar to the old days here of just having a single coal fire in the sitting room - part of you would be boiling hot, part of you will be freezing cold and the rest of the house will be cold and damp...

henroben That’s exactly how I was brought up in 1970s England: one coal fire in the house and nothing else. I’m old enough to have finally started to feel the cold more these days, but I’d still rather be cold than hot.

And that has led to some right wing derangement with a lot of numbskulls handwaving away the cost of living crisis 'who remembers how shit it was in the 70s and we didnt die then?'.

That's been the mantra since Brexit (and probably before, but a lot louder now) - "we didn't die in the past, therefore it must be good and anything contrary to this is weak"

No one ever used to have flat screen TVs or mobile phones! We didn’t shower every day, we’d all get in the bath together once a week instead! People want everything these days.

Top tip: replace your carpets with electric blankets. Mimics underfloor heating for a fraction of the cost.
Top tip ++: run floor blankets off usb powerbanks which you charge at your local coffee shop.*
* Only order tap water of course

Central heating didn't exist in New Zealand in the 80's and 90's and while it gets pimped out as a tropical climate its closer to England than Aus (just with more sunlight)
In winter it will often get to under 5 degrees Celsius with added disadvantage of the majority of house are wood rather than brick.
So growing up you often awoke to seeing your own breath and freezing floors.
Whilst I've now adapted to the extravagance of a warm house a reduction in the use of heating could be managed without us turning into ice sculptures.

Yeah, let's put the common people back decades so the overlords can increase their profit margins.

My motivation is a reduction in fossil fuel dependency rather than some strange Tory support. I think any move to greener energy is going to mean a change in the use of existing heating systems.

Switching from coal to gas central heating was a revelation and I can tell you a coal fire is a miserable thing to own.
I still remember the damp coal added to the fire smell to this day. I should probably have a wash. Wait..it’s not Sunday. Carry on.

Coming from aus, my main motivation for never going to NZ to see family etc is because of how fucking cold it is there
