The vast majority will never pay it back
This gets said a lot about the student loans, but it completely misses the point about how it contributes to generational inequality.
When the debt gets "forgiven" it doesn't vanish in to ether. The government takes on the liability of whatever is left, and has to count it as part of the their debt. The servicing of *that* debt falls to generation taxation: i.e. the tax payers at the time. This is include all those people who were of the generation that had the current student loan system put upon them.
It's now a cliche, but it's true: this is all about shielding a generation from paying taxes. The current tory voter base (i.e. those > 50 years old and especially pensioners) will never have to take on this burden to pay for higher education.
I'm too old to have been caught in the student loan system, but it's a fucking con.
But what if all that is left is interest charges on the account, which the government set in the first place? The fees to the university have been paid off, the rest is the governement just making up a debt which isn't linked to any expenditure.
Unless of course the governement is borrowing against that made-up debt in order to give money to its mates elsewhere....

You'd never get to the point where it's just the interest that's left to pay off. For a start, there is only interest left if there is capital left to repay. If there is no capital to repay, there is nothing to calculate interest off.
On a normal amortising loan, the majority of the initial payments will be made up of interest. The mature the debt, the more each payment is made up of capital repayment than interest repayment.

Its important not to think of it as a loan. Technically, you are never actually in debt, you effectively pay a tax on your education.
Or at least some people do. I think only 25% of loans actually get paid off. The whole thing is so ridiculous.

Worst of all, Dominos have started charging £1.99 for delivery.

M8! That actually made me cancel an order last week. My usual complaint about dominos is 'if there is always a way to make your pizzas half price, just make your fucking pizzas half price'. I hate having to compare deals and whatnot.
But I got all the way through the process and got hit with the delivery fee and noped out. 30 quid for two pizzas and some wedges is bullshit.

You'd expect it's only the first stage too. An extra couple of quid for 'prioritised delivery' like Uberoo or a fiver a month for unlimited free delivery will be the next stage.
I wouldn't mind collection so much, but I've yet to see a store that wasn't located in the middle of a battlefield of yolo kerb parking/abandon chaos.

Yeah, if I had to collect, I would collect from somewhere that isnt Dominos. 30 quid gets you a long way towards a decent feed almost everywhere so Dominos is getting pushed further and further down the list.
Tbh, the only reason we ever get dominos is its the only thing one of us wont go 'im not in the mood for that' at.

It's an odd time to have done it, too.
Since lockdown, the choice of places that delivery has exploded. *Every* food outlet has decided it's worth their while.
So how do they respond to increased competition? Put prices up. Genius.

I think I lucked out on student loans. I got one for my 3rd year, and at the time it was crazy low interest rates, but I still managed to pay it all back within about 6 years. In hindsight I probably shouldn't have paid it off and should have stuck the money in the stock market or something.

To the point that a couple of places around here have shuttered their restaurants and moved to just doing takeaways.

I normally find that even the shittest small independent pizza places are better than Dominos. They're always greasy and artificial tasting. And the potato wedges are like something someone found at the bottom of a wheelie bin. I honestly prefer the shitty make your own things in supermarkets.
And actually ordering the things is the biggest pain in the arse known to man.

Yeah, not a dominoes fan. Too salty, ridiculous pricing a d now delivery charges? Fuck that, the twice a year we have to do it (typically kids birthdays as they seem to like them). Local Turkish place does ace pizzas.

Im not a big fan. I have the same objections to going to pizza express. It feels like a missed opportunity/failure of imagination.
But after an hour of 'I dont feel like curry/chinese/vietnamese/italian/carribean/mongolian' Im usually ready to eat the cardboard the pizzas came in.

To its credit... Dominos is one of the few places near us that does a vegan/veggie option other than 'fries' which is another reason it persists in our rotation.

We tried Caprinos over the weekend and it was probably the best takeaway pizza I've had. Even the side order of chicken wings was SPOT ON.
Then again all pizza sucks compared to Italy. Once you've been there.. pizza is never the same again.

On takeaways I've found supermarket versions are on a par or better than a lot of the locals. Specifically pizzas and curries.
Sure there's the hassle of heating shit in the oven but from the point of collection to your door can be 20 - 40 minutes which really fucks with the quality of the meal especially burgers and fries.
There are some (like Thai) that can survive and will never be replicated well in the supermarket but your standard pizza, burger, Chinese and Indian are now inferior IMO.

At the other end of the spectrum, Miller & Carter up the road are on the delivery apps. I can't imagine what a £60 steak looks like after half hour on the back of a bike.

We've done Michelin star dumplings delivery and it travels fine.
But I think you need better curry options if yours isn't better than a supermarket microwave job!
Five Guys delivers well (we have two branches close), and if you follow their instructions to pop the fries in oven on arrival even the fries are good.
I love pizza, and I love pizza in Italy, but it is different pizza. I would not agree that any pizza in Italy is better than any pizza in UK. I have a soft spot for the Americanised version that you get from Domino's or Papa John's. It hits a spot! Even if our usual delivery is from the local 1 min away that is Italian owned and staffed. Domino's is more consistent whereas the local can mess up sometimes (soggy base or inconsistent topping application).
