All I can say in this is I have the same fears. I rent at 1375 a month, if I lost my job I’d be out in the street within a month or two. That’s no way to bring up two small(ish) children. If I saved 10% of my income I’d have, in ten months time, the ability to survive…one month. Fantastic. I have no savings myself because I’m paying off debt incurred through those small children when they were at nursery and the wife was part time. Because Britain hates parents.
It’s not rocket science.

The irony is that the post he’s taking such umbrage with is me explaining that I’ve started saving for this exact thing

Christ, apparently worrying about potentially relocating your family with little to no savings if your job was to go south is enough to ruffle feathers now, shoot me now.

But he wouldn't lose it all. And if he's so afraid of losing his job, he could just put less than £10 per month into unemployment insurance. Sorry, but I just don't see how the everyday reality of basically every wage worker is a "truly horrifying" prospect. Lots of families have to downsize and move at least once in their time. And if the UK is really so devoid of social securities as I'm beginning to suspect it must be, and you still raise your standard of living so high that you can't even put 10% of your income into your own securities, then you're just a dumbass and shouldn't be the head of any family and should certainly not have the audacity to complain about your dire situation to other people. But yeah, I probably just don't understand how life is in the UK. A lot of things I'm reading in this thread are actually bizarre to me. Well done you. You managed to get your point out! I mean, it’s a shit point and makes you look a prick but hey - you did it. Good job.

If my only fear was my standard of living declining somewhat... well I wouldn't be afraid at all. So what are you actually afraid of, then? Starvation? Freezing to death? Dying from untreated health problems?
Or is it just a lower standard of living after all?
What the fuck is wrong with you man?! Anything other than literal death isn't worth being afraid of?

No reason to make this personal. If I saved 10% of my income I’d have, in ten months time, the ability to survive…one month. Really? You live so much on the edge that you couldn't do anything to lower your costs? Also, you only have to bridge the gap to your next job, not live years on your savings. There is always a low paying job opening somewhere that helps you stretch that amount way longer, especially if you also lower your expenses. It's not rocket science.

I like the bit where you complained about Psiloc making it personal *after* you posted:
"you're just a dumbass and shouldn't be the head of any family and should certainly not have the audacity to complain about your dire situation to other people."
Despite the fact that the reality of the financial precipice (and the resultant and justified worries) probably applies to loads of posters here.
People commit suicide over the fear of not being able to adequately support their families.

If you read what I posted again you will realize it does not apply to Psiloc at all, because the part you omitted from your citation excludes him.

Whether it's worth calling out someone who lives in a country with NIS and NHS, child benefits and yadda yadda and who calls the prospect of having to lower their standard of living, possibly moving and finding a new job, "truly horrifying".
I would always do that again. If it's such a nono in this forum then just get it over with and ban me.

If you read what I posted again you will realize it does not apply to Psiloc at all, because the part you omitted from your citation excludes him. So the bit where you said "should certainly not have the audacity to complain about your dire situation to other people." wasn't directed at Psiloc who you have randomly taken umbrage at for describing the fear of losing his job and having to move his family as "truly horrifying". I'm guessing your actual issue may in fact be his choice of adjectives, so perhaps if he put "truly worrying" that would have been fine for you? Although I am guessing your lack of empathy and fact you don't have dependents means you wouldn't consider that worrying either as the UK has....er an National Health Service? Edit - don't think your comments are a no-no "on this forum", they'd go down equally as badly in any context I reckon. Basically rolling your eyes at other people's anxieties and fears. If they don't apply to you, great. Don't see why you are so triggered that someone else may worry about the prospect of not being able to pay their mortgage.

Tbf with some comments on here in the past from random folk laughing at people not so fortunate in life it could have been either way on that evidence alone.

Again, if you read the whole sentence and understand the context of it, you will see that it is directed at a hypothetical Psiloc in a reality in which his original statement that prompted me to start this whole trainwreck of a discussion would be true.
Which is not this reality.

So it *was* directed at Psiloc then? Followed by a quick flash of the hypothetical "you, but not really you" get-outta-jail card.

Can't be. Psiloc is saving up for emergencies and the UK is not the hellhole without any social security nets a lot of people in this thread are trying to picture it as.

I could manage two or three with a lower ‘quality of life’. Amazing stuff. It’s not exactly the dream. Things could be worse, we aren’t living under threat of bombardment etc, I mean I do understand that.

You seem to be completely unaware of how the majority of people live, or the cost of things vs wages. Saving is an obvious thing to do, the ability to do that is really fucking hard for most and not because of anything they’ve done wrong.
