How the hell do you only spend £36 on gas in November?

We got our first proper winter gas bill in the new house last week and gas came to a tidy £200, with £100 electric on top.
That was bit of a sick-inducing surprise…

Pretty sure something’s not working correctly.

That was bit of a sick-inducing surprise… Have you at least got a smart heating system in place with independent TRV control, zones etc.? I dread to think what our gas bill would be without our EvoHome system! Are you on a fixed or tracker tariff?

No smart thermostat or meter, but there are TRVs on the radiators. I’m not convinced they’re working though, so am going to grab some new ones. Will look to replace the thermostat in the NY.

Good plan. Just be aware that as well as the plastic TRV, easily replaceable bit, the metal valve that is actually plumber in to the rad can also be faulty. Happened to a couple of mine and I ended up having them all replaced there with new TRVs throughout. Throw in a boiler service and it was the best part of a grand including VAT

Gotta say it's kind of awesome that the Octopus tracker is managing to keep gas levels between 5 - 6p: www.cochon.co.uk/octopusBack when it started creeping over 6p in October I was concerned what it would be come December, whether it'd reach the 9p+ highs of last year, but it's really levelled out nicely. I'm so glad we managed to get on it in July, even if that was later than many others. I've probably jinxed it very badly now, sorry.

How the hell do you only spend £36 on gas in November? By being a fucking miser and not putting the heating on. See my post. I have blankets and layers. I put it on a few hours a week in the evening.

I totally respect the dedication and effort there, but the atmospheric temp in your house must be dropping down to single-figures on proper cold days.... that can't be good for your health.

Is say 1000 quid for that is a bargain. I've been quoted far worse from a plumber that does good value work and that I trust.

that can't be good for your health. Totally isn't. The exhaled warm air will condensate on the walls and windows, which will lead to mold, and moldy air is very bad for health.

It's literally just me in an old Victorian end terrace house. More fucking ventilation than swiss cheese. I see what you're saying and I don't let it get too cold but there's sod all I can do to keep the place warm. Even in the height of summer, the front room can be jumper temperature. I'd love to get some insulation done but finding a reputable company who will do it and won't just slap some dry lining on that causes damp is ridiculously hard. Best quote I had was £2300 per room and that was in 2022.

Speaking of condensation. We had some window panes and hinges replaced over the summer, and also some proper decent shutters installed. The condensation is mad. It's always been an issue, as it's an old house, but feels problematic now. I'm all in on a PIV once I get some cash.

Old frames were metal and the water that sat on the cills was just mental. We got composite metal/timber windows and just double glazed as triple was out of budget sadly. Even so we get bad condensation but it’s on the outside of the pane! Not enough heat escaping through the glass to warm it and then the atmosphere hits and it condenses. It’s a pain (pane?) though as you can’t see through it for a good bit of the day. And people will think out windows are shit 😔 We do still get a little on the inside at the edges when conditions are right though.

It's definitely gone up a notch since we replaced the hinges. I assume because there are fewer gaps. I think we've done this to death but PIV sounds like a solution. It may be snake oil but at this point, I'm prepared to try anything!

Do you need ducts? I like the sound of it, but Edwardian property with solid walls...

I think it depends on the size of the house. Don't think it's necessary for most houses by the sounds of things.

Hmm yeah it’s a little high but not what I would say rip off high . Probably no more than 200 pounds materials and about 550 labour. I’m not VAT registered but sounds like I need to put my prices up a bit! Haha

If you live alone in a huge house that you can't heat, it might be better to just drain the pipes and buy an infrared panel that you set up wherever you sit most of the time. You'll still have the condensation problem, but at least your pipes won't burst when they freeze up.
