Solar panels paying off. I paid absolutely nothing for electric last month and barely a couple of quid for gas. Meaning something like 80% of my cost was standing charge -_- We've just had a big ol' kitchen/diner built on the back of the house and I'm looking at the massive flat roof and thinking I surely need to get solar panels up there. We're south-facing on the south coast with zero shade, seems fookin obvious. Only concern I have is that we're planning on staying here for about 10 years (or until the kids move on...), so not sure if we'd even break even by then?? Take them with you when you move

Good luck selling it without!! My seller took all the light bulbs from my first house purchase, which I thought was petty. Though I should've realised how petty upon entry as the house number plaque from the wall outside was taken as well!
People.

Does anyone have any fancy electrical heating equipment in their house? Soon. Heat pump and underfloor heating is installed. Will report on it if we ever move in and switch it on. Been in a caravan for 18 months of a 12 month build, but it's getting close now.

Might take the windows and doors with us when we move.

Been in a caravan for 18 months of a 12 month build, but it's getting close now. We seriously looked into a heat pump when our boiler packed in, had quotes and everything but we'd have needed like 7 new radiators and air-to-air wasn't possible and the cost was 10x the price of a new gas boiler. I just couldn't justify it. I'd probably have one if I was building or renovating a house though. My main thing is I can see them getting cheaper as adoption goes up.

I don't know how accurate it is but my MIL says the person she bought her house tried to get her to pay extra to keep the carpets, and actually took them with her when she refused.

This should all be covered in the legal agreement.

They have a break even calculation. It's technically possible to break even in less than 10 years, but depends on many local factors.

My two pennies worth is calculating the payback isn't the be all and end all, earlier this year I spent a fair amount on 19 panels, 10kw of batteries, Eddi diversion to the hot water, Zappi car charger and and emergency power supply for cut outs. I can't imagine I'll ever break even purely on energy costs but I've sold it myself on it's reduced elec costs by 80% or so, it's put value on the house should we ever sell and then smug mode of knowing I've got it, be that not giving so much money to energy companies or the reduced carbon footprint blah blah benefit (not sure of impact of production of solar panels tbf)

Oh yeah sorry - total fuds that's who. Sounds ridiculous.
I was more meaning things like solar PV etc could be specifically mentioned. What a loon taking the house number. I wonder if they moved to the same number of house?!

People are weird. When we bought our house and visited it as owners for the first time, the adult daughter of the sellers (who were complete pricks during the sale) was there with her car and child. We thought it was a wistful meaningful moment for her. Nope. She had moved out ages ago and was just there to collect some bricks. Just normal 20-year-old heavily weathered loose reddish bricks, 5 of them. The last of which had been used to prop the gate open.

We viewed a really nice house once where every single chrome plug socket, light switch, fitting etc. had been removed in every room across the house... I assumed they were mid-refurb and decided to sell or something but no, the wife had recently stripped them all out during a messy and ongoing separation. Appreciate stress levels are high but at least get a buyer for your house first!!

Mine are calculated to break even before 10 years, and that was before the leccy prices went thru the roof.
It will add value to the house also as an improvement.

I've seen mixed things on adding value. Don't expect loads.
I also don't see mine as purely financial. It's better for the environment and means I stick 2 fingers up to the big boys.
I can say that Mon-Weds this week I exported 35kwh off a 2.5kw array, SSE facing in the north. I've used 7kwh in that time. On a shit day I'll export 2kwh so I'm definitely looking into battery.

We use about 15kWh a day... I've never really looked into it, had a Google and that seems like a lot for a family of 4 but the wife and I do work from home and the kids do have two TVs on almost constantly when they're at home, which I guess adds a fair bit. Currently on the Octopus tracker, which hovers around 18p.

Marques did a great in-depth review of his experience, granted it's Telsa, shitloads and America. But I think the findings are interesting regardless.

A modern TV uses about 100 W, so if it runs for 10 hours, that's only 1 kWh. Non-gaming computers also don't use much, maybe double that. So the larger part of that 15 kWh has to come from somewhere else.

Aye, does seem a bit high. That's like £100 a month just on electricity if you include standing charges. You must've had absolutely horrible bills before you switched to the tracker tariff!
You can add a couple of hundred watts if they're playing on consoles, so could be 300w (ish) per kid. Probably still worth doing a bit of a reccy and seeing if you can find any obvious energy vampires.

Yeah 15kwh per day is...quite something. At 27p per kwh that's over £4 a day.

We’re a family of four and do about 15kWh too, but that would include electric hot water which would be gas for most people.

Even on the tracker, last month was £80 (average of 12kwh) for 32 days

Well shit... luckily we were on a fixed rate for the past few years until July when we were moved to the Octopus tracker so bills haven't been too bad over the years. I can't even work out what would be causing it, I've got 2 x microservers (Proliant N45L and Gen8) running 24/7 in the loft but they can't be too bad. Other than that, fuck knows! Time to do some investigating.

Looking at my Octopus app, the house seems to "idle" at 0.25kW per hour overnight... does that seem a lot?

Yeah, that's pretty damn high. Would work out at 6 units per day, which is often my total usage.
