Went through a bit of a life-wobble a couple years back which manifested partly in looking to move away.
We had an offer accepted on a house that we could afford, but stretched us hugely out of our comfort zone. Did a spreadsheet with all monthly costs etc on it and we were finishing every month with a couple hundred quid. Got a good offer on our house needed to complete the sell and then shat the bed that night about it all. Lost some money on the whole process but pulled out.
I still have pangs of loss at the idea of having moved to the dream forever home. But this is tempered with all things happening that we could have ridden 1 of - increased mortgage rates, increased energy, wage stagnation, increased cost of living etc, we would have been in the camp of watching everything to make ends meet and very possibly have to sell the place.
Sitting in my not dream home but happy we don't have to watch every penny. Can't imagine the stress otherwise.

Bloody hell. That kind of jump would absolutely ruin us. My missus quit a well paid job years ago due to stress and switched to basic admin roles instead, which obviously came with a hefty pay cut. She still comfortably covers her half of bills, but has been talking about getting a second job to cover them if we get any more massive increases.
I've been overpaying the mortgage like a bastard, so we can hopefully avoid thinking about stuff like that in four years when our mortgage fix ends.
This government are going to be utterly fucking reviled by a massive chunk of the population in years to come (well, more than they already are). The cunts that cost/almost cost us our house.

Martin Lewis and others have pointed out that this only actually affects a certain chunk of the population, over time, so doesn't really do all that much to impact inflation. It just makes life shite for the people that should be able to survive.
Basically, they fucked it. Again. Like they have for the past god knows how many years.

I'm working with someone that's got a full time job with me but has taken on agency work to make ends meet. His wife looks after the kids and doesn't work but they miss him.
So he finished an 8 hour shift on Monday at 17:00, started another 8 hour shift at 19.00 elsewhere the same day and then (I thought he was joking) said see you tomorrow. He repeated this on Tuesday and just worked the days for the rest of this week.
Absolutely mad.

Nah, it was Gordon Brown raiding the pensions or something. Seriously though, I hope everyone stays on their feet. I would love to buy a house to get away from landlord cunts, but saving a 20% deposit when the average Welly house price is $900k is a long slog. Especially with the cost of living. Also I have credit card debt (see laptop thread).

One reason for us to not panic is that "Landlords already have paid up mortgages". Really reassuring to know, thanks BBC. I feel so much better knowing the majority of private landlords are pocketing/reinvesting the vast majority of their rental income.

I wish the general public here had the French mindset, would have fucking burned this government down by now. Not that I'm going to start this revolution mind (and therein lies the problem, no-one will).

In any sane world you would think that article was satire. Funny how it does not mention murdering your landlord for a week of peace to stop your eviction before you get arrested.
On a serious note, I am rather fortunate to live in a brand new social housing complex designated for caretakers and their family. Still required me to go further into debt to finish the place since it was delivered barren. It has solar panels and good isolation so I have managed well during the energy crisis.

In slightly positive news, my SEG is now up and running...just in time for the wettest, cloudiest month of the year.
Still, I've exported over 40kwh this week and it's helping the planet.

Cursed leased solar panels here. Every day is a mission to use every kWh myself. Are there any time of use tariffs that I’ve been overlooking that work for people like me? In the eyes of an energy provider I might as well not have any solar panels as I can’t produce any documentation to say I own them. Have panels and a battery but “normal” energy tariff atm

Have panels and a battery but “normal” energy tariff atm I'm on standard Octopus outgoing - 15p per kwh. Pisses all over Eon's paltry 4p. They keep emailing about the agile/ variable one. Essentially - it keeps things in line with market rates, so if electric import goes up then the solar output goes up. Given the weather, I'm ignoring it now but some people were getting 35p per kwh at one stage. The flipside is it was probably about 60p to import. Swings and roundabouts.

Quids in, British Gas just let us know that rather than the £190gas/170lec a month we have been paying since last October they are dropping us to £140/120. Crazy world when I feel the need to celebrate the fact our monthly utility bills are now just £350 if I include water...or add council tax and round up to neat £500/month for "rates".

How are water utility prices in the UK in general? I saw the news on Thames water and other water utility companies having been mismanaged?
In the Netherlands we probaly have the best functioning water utility companies in the world (although pur goverment are aiming for a 100% increase in prices through taxes). A bit of a victim of their own success story. I currently pay 9 euro a month for water including taxes.

£35 a month here for water, but that's metered.
Moving to the Octopus tracker for gas and electric has reduced our monthly spend at the moment by £40. All helps innit.

Sounds a bit higher but thankfully not crazy high.
Best investment I made is a savings head shower. Mainly for reducing my gass bill. Think it saves me 15 a month?

£90 a month?
Someone in the Rich family household is having shower times cut, baths banned and if it's yellow let it mellow... Brown flush it down.
Don't tell me someone keeps the tap running while brushing teeth or filling the kettle for one cup of tea/coffee? That sort of behaviour is banned in this house. Even the toliet has a hand made notice saying something like save water, hold to flush!
Ours is £27.55 per month with United utilities. 2+1 child who only turned 1 two months ago.

£53 on a meter with Thames Water. 4 bed, 2 adults, 2 kids. A kids bath every day, clothes wash every day, dishwasher every day. I do use the sprinkler a fair amount when dry, but also have like 400L of rain water stored. Looking to move to drip irrigation instead of the sprinkler.
