Yeah, I got moved to octopus when the shysters I was with went bust. Been impressed with the comms, and the website/app actually seems to work.

Nice one, might give it a go then.
One thing - I have an old meter that got upgraded to have a smart meter added to it, but it doesn't connect to Eon's servers, so I have to manually send the readings in.
Will that fuck up if I join octopus? Or will they not give a fuck? Would they even fix the one I have, or swap it out for one of theirs?

Nah, they don't care. Just have to keep.on top of meter readings. Curious why they are so much cheaper given the energy price guarantee though, all should be the same really.

Ok cool.
Yes, how come they can do this? And it's not like it's a one off - just checked which.co.uk and they have awarded octopus energy the number 1 slot for best energy provider for the 6th year running. And that was on 7th Feb this year.

Fuck it, I've joined them now on their standard flexible rate to start with. Can always adjust it later. Feel better about leaving Eon already.

Something odd must be going on with my EDF account. I have no direct debits or standing orders with them and the last 3 months the amount they owe me has been going up. Currently £360 in credit. I know the gov have been making contributions but surely not more than I use.

I was on Bulb - got email today that I was now Octopus.
They have an app! Which is cool. Will investigate tarrifs. I am on pay monthly variable - 36p for elec, 11p for gas.

Went from Green Network Energy one of the first to topple over to EDF and when the special fixed tariff ended we left and went to Octopus but by that point all the fixed rates had gone up so went variable. In hindsight I now know those fixed deals at the back end of 2021 would have been a good deal.
Not a single problem with Octopus. We don't have a smart meter so I just have a reminder setup to submit the readings at the end of the month.

Got the dreaded email from Eon about the support scheme ending “which means you’ll pay more”
They’ve looked at the direct debit and our monthly charge will be 345pm from May 1st, down from the current 470 before the rebate. Such a fucking scam, holding the prices higher while the rebate softens the blow right up to the last minute

They're also increasing the standing charge.
Because "reasons".

Energy companies now know they can charge insane amounts and get away with it.
They'll never drop prices to reflect wholesale prices when there's opportunity to make a mint.

I was told that the retail companies can only make £120 profit from each customer a year. I doubt very much hoarding/investing cash is part of that calculation though.

Is that all that’s let after the dividends are taken.
There’s a bicycle distributor that just went bust, auctioning off millions worth of bikes - their profit jumped from 500k to 5 million last year, they managed to pay out 3m worth of dividends before shutting down at least. Phew!

Well, quite.
I had seen stories of the distributor but didn't look closely. That seems that it should be more than a tad illegal. Expect many more from PPE companies

Fuck it - I'm moving to Octopus and getting that sweet solar export. Eon couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. Their "engineer" was so bad that he couldn't even fit a smart meter and had to get the local gas and electric board out.
The gas bloke's first question was "are you with eon or british gas?" because they're apparently so well known for employing blokes who know fuck all.
The guy who refused to fit my smart meter said "the meter is in the wall cavity. That's unsafe".
My house has no wall cavity.

Virgin Media going up £7 a month. Seven fucking quid!
It's time for "the call"

Sounds like people have got decent results by just rejecting the initial offer Virgin make, and waiting for a call from them the next day.
Always have a look on uSwitch or whatever to get some comparison prices before you call them.

Yeah, I went through that with Virgin the other week. The package I was on was going up over £50p/m when the introductory offer finished. I phoned and told them I wanted the new customer rate for the next 18 months, or I would cancel. They offered a bit of a discount, but not enough, so I gave my 30-day notice.
They called the next day and offered a better package for even less than I had requested in the original call.

Virgin also put an automated 'offer' when on hold, and say click 'x' to accept.
You get a better offer by speaking to the agent (at least I did, didn't even need to haggle - she just said we'll offer cheaper than the current one - think they're getting blasted, she sounded tired and reduced my current bill by a £1)

Yeah Virgin actually called me Pro actively to offer a better deal that skips this pay rise. Then my wife fucked it all up by refusing to allow a cable to run across the wall of 2 rooms to reach our tv.
Still have a slightly better deal but women!

Also playing devil's advocate for the telecoms company...their networks run on electricity. Energy costs have gone up massively.

Also playing devil's advocate for the telecoms company...their networks run on electricity. Energy costs have gone up massively. True but at some point profits/ dividends need to take a hit as opposed to the costs just being passed down to the public across the board. Some of this financial situation would be easier to stomach if many of these companies weren't also reporting record profits enabling the (usually) already wealthy shareholders/investors to get even more wealthy at our expense. The public has nobody to pass our increased costs on to and we've had 13 years of wage stagnation to boot.

True but at some point profits/ dividends need to take a hit as opposed to the costs just being passed down to the public across the board. This will never happen. They'll default before they will lower their margins.
