I was hoping nearer Manchester than that. I will have to risk a local outfit.

We really want to get the floor insulated but it would involve ripping up the existing floor and replacing which would cost a shitload. If the floor is carpeted, is there some way of sticking some kind of a thermal underlay underneath a thick carpet? No idea if such things exist, and probably not as good as proper insulation, but I'd imagine much less work.

It's a wooden floor, I'd love to carpet it but we have a 9 month old so carpet would get ruined pretty soon.

Just a thought about the 200 quid bill "help"
I'm currently living as a lodger, I don't pay bills directly as my landlords take care of that, I just pay my rent to them.
They will get 200 quid taken off their bill.
When I move out, hopefully to get a place of my own, I get the impression I'm going to be hit with the surcharge.
This will also go for anybody who moves out with their parents. Anybody households that consist of housesharers who moved on to get their own places will also be hit.
It's just a daft idea with no way to opt out.

Yup, you will absolutely be clobbered. Hence the analysis that there will be £180m extra paid (I think)

Why didn’t they make it opt-in and let the energy companies handle the admin pain? Make them work for their £180m at least.

I find it incredible how quickly the UK has turned into a grifter nation, extorting from its inhabitants to brazenly funnel money into the pockets of the wealthiest
I guess they figured that if the British population would take the shenanigans over Brexit without even one fucking bin being set on fire in protest they could just straight up start strong arming everyone into handing over more and more of their money.
I wonder how far they are going to be able to push it. Will folks be eating their pets before someone decides to take a stand and maybe push over a planter?

Yep. That extra £40 a year will never come off the bill. It'll just stop being itemised separately.

Had my first real taste of the impact from this, albeit from a much more privileged position than some of the other poor fuckers who will be hit hardest and need the most help.
Had a job interview yesterday morning and got offered the position later that evening which was great. Not a staggeringly bigger boost in pay initially but opportunity and scope to move up the ladder compared to where I'm at currently. But as soon as I started doing the fag packet maths I realised I'm probably going to have to turn it down. With it being a couple of towns over I'll have to buy a 2nd car (we easily manage with just the one with my current job/school/other half's job).
Between getting a semi-decent 2nd hand runner just for work in the current ridiculous used car market, the increases to cost in fuel (not to mention the abysmal usage we're seeing from this E10 stuff) along with the increases to NI and utilities to come in shortly it's a lot more of a hit to expendable income in the short term than it's worth, and I don't really fancy dipping into savings for the sake of a job. A real shame as pre-covid I'd have likely accepted it on the spot. I might be really cheeky and see if I can get some sort of fuel credit or do any remote work part of the week or something when I ring them on Monday, but I think it's better the devil you know at the minute.

Negotiate on salary, or on stuff like remote work and travel costs. You should probably always negotiate anyway, but in this case you have nothing to lose. (Assuming you're interested in the job/company).
Let them know you're really interested in it, and the only blocker is the salary/travel costs.

Yep. I've already negotiated upwards a bit, along with getting them to kick in a department wide salary increase due in April immediately. Will just have to try and nudge them on travel/possible WFH a little bit more on Monday. Not the end of the world just a little bit annoying, hard to feel too hard done by when it's literally making others go hungry.

I have an account just for bills so calculate all bills for the year, divide by 12 and have standing order running away, job done. Just thinking I should put an extra 80 quid a month in as the chances of a nasty surprise at the end of the year are very high...

It doesn't seem to be a thing but I will bat my eyelids at them on Monday. I think they do have EV charging points on site though so that could be another option. Especially if I can blag them to chip in for one at home.

Overpaid the mortgage and just decided to keep paying the same amount into joint every month even though £100 less will be taken out. I've always allowed a little bit of overage in that account, but have a feeling we'll need more over the coming year. Already had a 10% increase on our internet bill even though it should only be 3.9%, which I need to find the time to complain about.

Same here, we actually then have a standing order to transfer the amount that doesn't go on bills into an easy access savings account. The rate is pants I admit and should move the money elsewhere but we call it the home improvements fund so for example a good chunk of it was spent on having the roof replaced last year. Windows might be next as a few upstairs have blown so need fixing or replacing.

I always move extra into the savings and moving that back into the main account due to overspend always feels like a slight defeat; like I’ve not looked after things properly.
This year though, thank God I have a savings pot, because every cunt is after their coin make no mistake. My mortgage LTV is nice after 15 years of paying out, but I can’t help but feel a good pot of money to the side is something worth having. Then I buy games and that’s that !

Set up an overpayment of just over £100 on my mortgage for 6 months. Had the place just over 3 years. Do wish I'd started earlier but I was made redundant shortly after buying the place, then the pandemic hit. First two years were somewhat scary.
If all goes well I'll start lobbing more at it but an advisor tells me investing will get me a better return, long term.
This true?
Currently 32, 21 years left on mortgage (though calculations suggest I can have it paid off before 50 if I stay gainfully employed). I have no plans for kids, wife or pets and my goal is to retire somewhere around 50-55.
