So Aviva contacted me as a current customer (pension) and having moved car insurance from them two years ago to Direct Line to save money I'm now noving back again as they were £350 cheaper than Direct Line with a slightly better cover...wasn't too much of a ballache to do either, took about 15 minutes.
Still not cheap by any means (£700) but I always get most of the extras these days.

Fucking hell... Are you insuring all of the reindeer as well as the sleigh?

Haven't seen a quote like that since trying to insure a hot hatch at the age of 17 in the 90's!!!

I’ve always had ridiculous quotes from Direct Line, i think they just don’t cover London

They've always been one of the cheapest for me, them and Tesco's, I tend to bounce between the two every renewal or so. But then I'm not in London.
Saw an article a while back about things like new Range Rovers literally becoming next to impossible to insure in places like London.

They mustn’t be that difficult, they’re everywhere

UK car insurance prices are ridiculous. I pay £15 (Sweden) a month for fully comp and anyone can drive my car.

They mustn’t be that difficult, they’re everywhere By "next to impossible" I mean eye wateringly expensive. Obviously if you're willing to pay there's always a way. Was an article in Autocar a while back where some readers had quotes refused by some companies, and 5 figure sums quoted from others. Fuck that. I suspect much like you observed with Direct Line some insurers clearly have no interest in insuring certain cars in certain areas so they just give ridiculous quotes. Fortunately most of the time there's better out there if you shop around.

You guys are adding your mother as a named driver to the insurance right (assuming they're still around)?

When I bought my car I had to switch insurers. I think it was admiral at the time, I had a 125i then got a 340i and apparently a 33k car was exceptional somehow

Anyway, Marshmallow have offered 750 but I might do like I do with the wine list and go one from bottom, Hastings for 830. Mainly because I’ve heard of them

I was going to say "yeah, but the beer is really expensive" but not sure that's true anymore.

My eldest asked how much of his first year's car insurance fee he'd get back, as he hadn't claimed anything. Was hoping to use it for a holiday.....

Tell him they only do that if he got a good driver report when they do their random spot checks.

Suh-weet, cracked an alloy 'cos potholes in Grimsby are like WW1 trenches.
Definitely putting it up for sale before I need to buy new tires because that'll definitely wipe me out.

I swear we had maybe three glorious years where we didn't have to shop around for everything and you just got an honest price on auto renewal
Anyway, RACs breakdown cover loyal customer shafting was a 25% hike to £195 for two people, personal cover, unlimited nationwide tow + home start. Had to do the tedious phone haggle game to get £140 for 14 months (AA was comparable, green flag personal cover only for cars under 16yrs, one of ours is older)

Speaking of RAC, I'm currently waiting for them to come and jump start my car after I stupidly left the fan and windscreen wipers on while the engine was off because we were eating chips on a rained off beach day and my partner wanted to see the sea from the car.
I did this once before a few months back but I managed to get the engine going after waiting a few minutes, but no luck this time. I really should have learnt.
Got to wait in this car park for at least 2 hours now, if not more.

Oh dear. Hope the chips were good? Make sure you've got enough time on your ticket.

It's on one of those apps so we're just topping up the hours as they come.
Whole car is steamed up now, got a wet dog in the back just miffed about everything.
I'm now googling jump kits so this doesn't happen again.

I sat in an Asda car park some years ago waiting for a jump start, and got a power pack as soon as I could, which saved me a couple of times (and a mate once) until I finally replaced the battery. Saved a dead phone one day too. Great to have in the boot for piece of mind. Do some research on the right mAh for your engine.

Sounds like new battery time, try and stay positive, don't get talked into buying a new one by the RAC bloke, as they tend to overcharge.

The dashboard comes on, and the electrics seem to be working, it's just not enough juice to get the ignition going.
What other option is there if the rac guy tries to sell me a battery?

He'll get you going no matter what assuming it's just a flat battery, just that that tends to be what spiel they trot out and to be fair he might have a point and the prices the RAC and the like charge for new battery's can be shocking. Typically, with the engine off, modern cars, after say 20mins will cut off things like a heater fan or radio and throw up a warning on the dash to warn the occupants the battery charge may be effected, unless the battery is on it's last legs, how old is the battery?

I'll hazard a guess it's the original, so 12 years.
They're sending a local mechanic now, apparently.
