Just wanted a thread where we could have some car talk
New learner looking for advice? Buying a new car? Want to rant about some dickhead. Look no further fam.
I actually am worried about these new driving rules about mobile phone useage, I heard on the radio that you can't even use Spotify from your phone anymore, I've done some googling and found conflicting news. This can't be true can it?
NEW CHANGES TO HIGHWAY CODE

Seems reasonable if you're fiddling with Spotify while driving. Less so if it's just playing music in the car.

Yeah, I mean changing tracks whilst driving is silly, but I heard that you're not eve nallowed to stream music from your phone anymore. That can't be right can it?

Can't be, unless they're also banning listening to the radio.

I've only been driving for about 8 weeks but I'm already feeling less miserable on a Sunday evening knowing I don't have to jump on a motorbike at 5am on a Monday, especially at this time of year.
Really enjoying my BMW 325i still. Not terribly economical and it could probably do with a service but it's lovely to drive. Just need to be a bit careful on cold days when the tires aren't warmed up. Had the back step out a few times when exiting roundabouts.
Still got one eye on eBay incase I spot any Volvo 240s as that's my plan once I've had the BMW for a year or two.

There is no change at all to laws around the use of mobile phones in the latest legislation.
Not were there in the change before that. Basic rules are that you can't touch the phone screen while driving, but that's been the case for ages.

Yeah man, guy on the radio was definitely incorrect. Or maybe I misheard! I was really worried as our car doesn't have anroid auto or any complex infotainment system.
It's a 2019 Mini Countryman Hybrid, getting shot of it this year too. It's a lovely car to drive but we're going full electric this year.

I just read the highway code and it says it's illegal to hold a phone or satnav and they must be operated hands free.
Here you go:
Using a phone or a sat nav when driving It’s illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle. You must have hands-free access, such as:
a Bluetooth headset voice command a dashboard holder or mat a windscreen mount a built-in sat nav The device must not block your view of the road and traffic ahead.
You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times. The police can stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted and you can be prosecuted.

patrick 325i !!! My favourite car growing up, my uncle had one tuned up and could take me to a track in south London and tear it up. Always wanted one, the 90s model though. Which year do you have?

Sadly couldn't afford an earlier one but mines an '09 Coupe, which I think has aged pretty well. It's the M sport trim so it looks pretty decent but not as lairy as the newer models. But yeah, handles great, sounds nice and it's got about as much power as i'd want for a first car. I've enjoyed the much more relaxed commutes compared to my body overflowing with adrenaline after any short ride out I had on my sportsbike.

Has anyone here gone full electric yet? What are your experiences, pros and cons? Going for a Tesla test drive tomorrow to see what all the fuss is about.

Just got an electric hybrid but already thinking I could have gone full electric. Next car will absolutely be fully electric. In Sweden there's decent charging possibilities. The only down side is the cold weather makes heating a bit of a drain on the battery. Am yet to do a long journey in two months of use - max has been 120km. Easy for any electric car.

I also don't like the look of that pillar above the windscreen, it seems quite low. I hate the dash, I like have loads of buttons but I'm willing to give it go. Personally I'm more interested in the BMW IX, I managed to convince her to have test drive for that too. I think it's a bit more practical for us, especially since we're trying to start a family. And I don't think you can easily get a pram in the back of Model 3.

Yeah, I think I know which one I would prefer. I don't love the new BMW grilles (especially on an EV, which doesn't need the airflow), but ultimately, you can't see that when you're behind the wheel. Apparently the Tesla is great to drive, but I would be disappointed with the interior and build quality for the money and it's a very big jump to the S. I had an E Class estate (not a hybrid) as a loaner when my brother came up and the two cars are not far apart in price - the Merc is a couple of grand more - but they are literally worlds apart in terms of being in the cabin.

Loads of viable alternatives to Tesla these days, anyway. Tesla's market share is going to shrink big time in the coming years.

New BMWs are so fucking ugly. Like absolutely hideous. I can’t believe they have triple downed on that grille on every model.
I would never buy another one looking like that.

I have the IX3 model and am really happy with it. Not as rapid as some EVs but I was also looking for something more practical than a model 3. By coincidence I previously had an E class estate and I thought the same thing about the Tesla interior.

The BMW iX and i4 were two of my favourite cars last year. Uncannily quiet in the case of the iX, even maxed on the Autobahn trying to make my flight home. Foam-filled tyres and lots of other stuff mean they're very relaxing ways to travel.
I've got an Ioniq 5 this week and it's fab - really good family car with loads of interior space, but it desperately needs a rear wiper...
Cars are great.

No regrets at all about going full electric. Range has taken quite a hit in the cold weather but it’s not a problem for general day to day use. It’s a simple thing but being able to pre-heat the car based on your departure time is a game changer on these cold frosty mornings.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it was something that they decided the Chinese market wants and they sell masses of cars there so they've gone full on. Obligatory:

The most concerning part change to the highway code is the one that gives cyclists priority if they're coming up on your left when turning. Obviously anyone turning should be checking their mirror but can see a few accidents caused by that, esp van or lorry drivers where they might be unsighted. Other rule changes re cyclists/peds seem fine to me but that one stood out as dangerous.

S'what I meant. Very odd rule change. Can see lots of drivers losing their shit about cyclists being in middle of the road mind you. I've always done that when cycling on quieter roads.

The big problem with it is that it gives even more power to the fucking idiots who don’t even bother to look before crossing the road. Especially people who are out running - if I’m turning left and you just launch yourself out in front of me across the road I’m turning into, then either you’re going to get hit because I can’t react quickly enough, or someone’s going to rear end me because I’ve had to slam the anchors on. Twats.
As for full electric, got a Mach E in September and it’s superb. Bloody quick, smooth, practical for the family and being able to get 250 miles range for £4.50 is a thing of deep joy.

Not keen on this change that means drivers have to give way to a ped waiting to cross the street at a junction.
I hate getting ‘waved over’ by a car at the best of times. Much prefer to wait to assess the situation myself once traffic is clear.

The problem with a lot of cyclists is that they are the heroes of their own Tour de Swindon and won’t pull over to let the gigantic trail of traffic past like even a tractor does. I can see this making it even worse.
