Sigh there's a problem with the Honda jazz. You know when it revs instead of accelerating? It's doing that at speeds above 40.
So, got it booked it to a mates garage.
I'm *hoping* it's transmission fluid or a new clutch. That might be around 500 quid if it's the clutch.
If it's fluid, then that's fine.
But if its a rebuild of the transmission then we're talking thousands, which would be scrapyard time.
Great!

No, was a car dealer but did what Patrick did on the previous page and bought it without seeing it. Sold as seen etc
If it's the clutch I'm fine with that. But anything else could potentially put it in the scrapyard

Wish I had a mechanic mate.
My mechanic is currently on holiday for 2 weeks and my AC is fucked.

It could just be the clutch slipping. That's more likely if it's happening in more than one gear. It might even just need the cable adjusting or replacing.

Damn Quad. Rooting for the cheap result.
Is that the one with bugger all mileage? It shouldn't need a new gearbox if so

I thought I was just having to get used to it but now I've had a proper run out, there's definitely a problem. I can get it to accelerate, it just takes an age. Its fairly dangerous to drive too as you can't make quick manoeuvres.

Checked mot history and it's generally been fine but has done hardly any miles since covid (bout 3k miles in 2 years) so its clearly been sat and not run much. One elderly owner popping to the shops etc which does explain heavy clutch usage I guess. I'm hoping, anyway

If it's doing it in all gears, then you can pretty much rule out an input shaft or cog problem in the trans. It could be the main (output) shaft, of course, but that's incredibly unlikely. Especially on a car with that kind of mileage. Where does the clutch bite when you lift the pedal? If it's really high, it might be worn plates, if it's really low, probably just needs adjustment. HTH.

Didn't they stop making the 240 in the early 90s? '93 off the top of my head I think? Yeah I think the only ones I see for sale have been in the same family for years and taken really good care of or they're barn finds. The market for low mileage examples have been a bit mad(12k for one with 40k miles) but they've calmed down a bit. I should be able to find one with 100k or so within my budget.

I *think* it's when the clutch is really high (I'm not in it right now)

quadfather so probably the pressure plate or thrust bearing then. Likely to need a clutch kit. Obviously, difficult to be certain without looking/driving it, but transmission failures tend to exhibit other symptoms (like not engaging gears at all). I couldn't help with the bass lines, but I know a little bit about cars. 😁

If a dealer has sold you a car with a fucked clutch, they have sold you with a fucked clutch and need to make it right.

It's absolutely fine with gear changes - and the clutch doesn't feel odd or weird to use, which apparently is related to more transmission type faults as you say if it was weird or didn't engage at all. I shall write a special bass line, just for you

Ask for a full refund and they take it away? Ask them to foot any repair bills? What about getting them to fix it and then return it? All absolute fucking ballaches and I have to have a car by 25th as need to start driving to work again. Currently on holiday to *relax*.

I mean, I would be tempted to go with option A, you can reject it within 30 days. But up to six months you should be due a repair.
Where it might get iffy is the clutch being a consumable so I would ring them ASAP to at least alert them to the fact its fucked. Even dumping the clutch like a hero shouldnt knacker it in a few days, so they may pay or contribute to save taking it back.
They will know you could cause them hassle if you wanted so any decent dealer should help. If youre happy with the rest of the car, ask them to reimburse for work done on provision of a receipt. At the very least, you wont know if you dont ask.

Yeah, absolutely agreed. Unless you have paperwork specifying a trade sale or some such, you have standard consumer rights, I believe.
It's definitely worth asking.

Don't know how it works across the channel, but here some insurances include legal counsel, and that includes sale disputes. I've been looking at insurance because I've ended up buying that i30N that I posted a couple pages back.

They're a pretty solid motor tbh, but have you been inside one? They're pretty basic compared to a more modern car. Still, if you're ok with that, they go on forEVER if they're looked after: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202207037413278?13 owners, 280k miles, with a replacement (2.3 turbo, no less) engine! Although, still slow as hell. But if you have a crash, will basically disintegrate most modern cars and carry on.

Yeah, absolutely agreed. Unless you have paperwork specifying a trade sale or some such, you have standard consumer rights, I believe. It's definitely worth asking. Well, here's attempt number one. I'll start by being nice. "Hi Adam. It's Max who bought the Honda jazz from you last week. Most things with the car are ok, however, there is a problem with either the transmission or the clutch. Changing gears is fine, but over 35mph, if you press the accelerator, the engine just revs and doesn't accelerate. This will need a garage to look at it which I have arranged. If its just transmission fluid, then that's fine, but if I need a new clutch or it's a transmission issue then it's going to have to be weighed up against the value of the car. You mentioned that if there were any issues to let you know, so I am doing so. What are my options here with this from a financial point of view with yourselves? I understand there was a warranty on this car? If you can let me know, if be grateful. Thanks." Let's see shall we. I want this all in writing.

Yeah, I'm already thinking coilovers, wheels, lourves and an engine swap in the future. I wanna go all out! Edit* But yeah, absolutely don't mind about old interiors. It's probably the thing I'm least arsed about.
