I think the run from Follow the Leader through to Untouchables by Korn has to be in that conversation. I’ve not heard a heavy music production as good as any of them since for one. Deftones would obviously not thank you for calling them nu metal lol. It’s funny how at the time when Kerrang!, Rock Sounds and Hammer were the Bible how absolute also-ran dreck would come out hyped to the gills *and you’d buy into the hype* and then realise years later it was bad or boring or problematic or some combination of the above. I’m looking at you, Taproot, He’d Pe, Mudvayne and Staind 😂 Staind were absolutely the most boring band I ever saw live. Remember Amen? They were absolutely the opposite, fucking awesome. Going through the Kerrang back issues I recovered from my parent’s house (173 issues, 1996-early 2000s) its been really eye opening to remember who was getting hyped and who was flying under the radar. I think Korn are the greatest nu-metal band but their albums all have real duds on them as well as monster hits. Which is why I think those Deftones and SOAD albums hold up as better albums even if neither of them want to be included in the genre. Significant Other and Hybrid Theory I think are just both perfect encapsulations of what the genre was musically and culturally. For good and bad. Its funny, there are bands I was big into at the time who I really cringe at now (the lyrics of Snot do not hold up at all) and others who I was really snobby about but with some distance and nostalgia goggles on I actually enjoy more now than I did then (I was far too mature for a baby’s band like Slipknot when I was 19 but in my 40s? Sure). I'm very unapologetic about my love of Korn. Their first 4-5 albums are overall pretty amazing (I think Issues is their peak), but there are a few real duds (Follow the Leader has some bangers but damn it has some of their worst songs ever). I also think their last two albums have been genuinely good, The Nothing in particular could nearly sit amongst their classics. I did go through a substantial nu-metal phase. As did most of the metal scene, with a lot of bands toying with it. Fear Factory's Digimortal, for example. And honestly a lot of it I still enjoy. But yeah, swathes of it was awful, and a lot of one hit wonders who somehow persisted. So I understand why the genre is looked down on, a dirty word. It's amusing reading some reviews and threads online where hipsters are trying really hard to pretend that current so-hot-right-now band Chat Pile aren't noticeably influenced by Korn, despite the bassist saying they're one of his favourite bands and the band he's spent most money on seeing and supporting. It's not the only influence the band has, but a good few of their riffs could easily have been on a Korn album. There's even a Davis inflected "Get the fuck up" towards the end of one of their tracks.

The problem with Korn is that their name is Korn. It makes it kinda hard to take them seriously.

Pity it’s used on Amazon advert, but that song Full of Life by Christine & The Queens has really got under my skin. Absolutely tremendous track.

Korn also have the advantage of being consistently one of the best live bands of that generation. I think Slipknot are probably their only rivals in the nu-metal orbit who could challenge them in that regard.
Deftones on the other hand, as much as I love their albums, sound like absolute shite on basically any live recording you can find.

I dunno about Korn or Slipknot, or live recordings, but I've seen the Deftones a couple of times and they were fucking great both of them.

Fleetwood Mac: Then Play on extended This really is Peter Green's magnificent octopus. A sublime album from 1969. Green and Kirwin at their best. John and Mick providing equally great drums and bass.

Did you ever see the Peter Green Splinter Group when he toured for a bit in the 00s? He was kind of a passenger being wheeled on stage when I saw them but man could he still play

Somehow fallen into listening through all my Flaming Lips albums this morning (Clouds Taste Metallic, Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, At War With The Mystics). I do like them but there is a nagging feeling that they become the Disney version of psychedelia almost as soon as they hit their stride

I dunno, Embryonic came after all those albums and it's one of the most fearless and "out there" albums in their catalogue.

I can’t think of a good reason why haven’t kept up properly. I think UFOs At The Zoo is the newest thing I still own but remember having the Pink Floyd album on my ipod.

Generally not a genre I'd normally listen to, but playing Neon White made me appreciate them.

Re listening to. At the moment heavy rotation of: Tom Petty & TH: Long After Dark deluxe edition with various extras including never before released and sublime "Never be you" such was Petty's skill he gave this track away! Jerry Cantrell new album I Want Blood excellent from one of THE pioneers of grunge.

I do like them but there is a nagging feeling that they become the Disney version of psychedelia almost as soon as they hit their stride I saw them live at a festival back around the time Yoshimi came out, and they were certainly an experience. Walking around in a Zorb over the crowd, firing confetti cannons into the audience, bubbles, a couple of fans getting married on stage, etc.. I'm not sure the musical performance was all that good (probably hard to sing in tune while zorbing), but it was a memorable sight.

After seeing them (surpsingly?) win the Mercury prize I've been listening a lot to English Teacher. It started off a bit like "this won?!" but having listened to their album about 20 odd times I completely get why it won. Every song has a hook despite sounding like it doesn't, it's bizarre chemistry.

My wife bought it and would put it on in the car and I was like “its fine but I don’t get the fuss” and a few listens later it totally sucked me in despite me not being able to put a finger on why.

I mean a song like Nearly Daffodils has no right being as earwormy as it is, and yet it's stuck in my brain 90% of the time at the moment. It's weird.
