I can’t get a handle on what this album will be. It sounds like the film (which I missed) is a bit like that one Metallica did where there is a loose narrative rooted in a concert film. But this single sounds like a studio record. Is it a bit of both? I note that they have been flirting with this more late sixties/early seventies style on their last few singles.

Simply Red Picture Book. I am not a huge SR fan but have always loved this album, especially the tracks Sad old red and Picture book.

Seeing as they’re probably done now, I stuck on a bit of Tenacious D this evening.

Was listening to 6 Music whilst working - which isn't something I do much these days. Listen to 6 Music I mean. I do work, more or less. Anyway Craig Charles had Matty Matheson as a guest and he chose this band I've not heard of before as one of his picks, but I quite like their sound.

Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics...
It's summer (allegedly)! The sun's shining (sometimes)! The weather's glorious (or so I keep being told)! Everyone's happy (seemingly)!
... So of course I'm listening to Electric Wizard. Take that, society!
Their first album, which I posted up-thread, was pretty standard Sabbath worship - quite good, but nothing special.
This was their sophomore effort, and to describe it as a big jump forwards from the debut would be a major understatement.

I love Electric Wizard. Come My Fanatics is great, but the *next* album is superlative. Dopethrone is simply put the single best doom metal album ever created. I've not heard a doom album as visceral since. Plenty of good doom albums, including stuff by Electric Wizard themselves, but there's something about the sheer misanthropy on that Dopethrone that really scratches an itch. By all accounts Dopethrone was written in the midst of the entire band all having very unhealthy, self-destructive addictions. And I'm wary of glamourising that stuff, but it's really hard to imagine somebody in a clean living, healthy frame of mind making that album. Looking forward to seeing their current lineup at Arctangent. Anyway, I'm currently listening to this and it's still a fucking banger.

While I think Dopethrone has better songs (particularly 'Funeralopolis', 'We Hate You', and the title track), I prefer Fanatics as an album, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

That's fair, I can see what you mean. I think I just like the seething contempt for everything that simmers away on Dopethrone.

Can't get enough of this new King Gizzard song. So joyous. Their new album can't come out soon enough.

Autoclave - Autoclave
From Dorset doom to D.C. indie/math rock - the first band of Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex, Wild Flag) and Christina Billotte (Slant 6, Casual Dots).

Thanks to the singer’s tv show on BBC Scotland this band ended up being the soundtrack to most of my lockdown years. I hadn’t realised quite how massive they’d become since (sold out the Barras in minutes for this gig)
