I haven’t watched any of this, but your post reminds me of The Mythbusters “doing” arrow catching. They hired a twitchy-as-fuck American ninja, who literally calls himself “Arrow Catcher”, and he definitely couldn’t do it I think they proved via robots and so on that it really isn’t possible. That's mostly right. What they found was that the ninja could sometimes catch a partial-draw arrow fired from about 30ft, but he couldn't catch full-draw arrows from a similar distance (i.e. extremely short range when the arrow is going max speed). Thus an elf - with much better/faster reflexes than a human, catching an arrow seems pretty reasonable fantasy stuff (esp. as it seemed to be at the end of its flight). Interestingly they did confirm that said ninja could fairly reliably deflect a full-draw arrow with his sword and cross the distance to the shooter before they could draw, nock and fire another arrow. I love Mythbusters - pretty much the whole thing is (was?) on Prime and I rewatched it over the pandemic. This all looks "okay" in the teaser. Elf arrow catch is probably the best bit of VFX - some of the other stuff looks a bit too shiny or game-CGI - particularly the person hanging from a dagger, who looks entirely CGI (like they've texture mapped someone onto a model or something, it's weird). Can't judge anything about the show from this except that they seem to be going for a very LotR/Hobbit look, maybe leaning a little Hobbit (not ideal but the look wasn't the problem, it was the script and the action scenes - with Jackson doing to the Hobbit exactly what we'd all been unfairly afraid he'd do to LotR).

How about stopping an arrow mid air with force powers. Anyone looked into that?

How about stopping an arrow mid air with force powers. Anyone looked into that? I believe Mythbusters position is that something has to happen in a show/movie or at least be an urban legend before they can do it, and so far we've only had blaster bolts stopped with Force powers (IIRC) so sadly that's outside scope. That's the nerdiest possible answer I can give you here They did do a Star Wars episode, but it was like "Could Luke have swung across that gap with Leia?" (plausible), would the Ewok log trap have actually wrecked the AT-ST? (plausible), would shoving someone in a Tauntaun actually help them to survive etc? (plausible).

Mmm. Not sure about that, feels very based on the movies fan servicey. Some overacting thrown in there too. I'll watch the shit out of it anyway.

I think its more the idea of the Silmarillon than actually adapting it.
I’m surprised how close it looks to the original movies

It really is hammering home that it wants to be like the films. That isn't too much of a problem though, is it? I seem to recall quite a few people liked those films.
More bleh was the dialogue, which all sounded fairly generic standard fantasy epic pronouncements. Hopefully those lines were just written to sound good in a trailer because it would get grating if the actual show was like that all the time.

Now you mention it, maybe it was the juxtaposition between the great visuals and appalling dialogue/delivery that made me recoil a bit. Also, i may be either misremembering the book, or missed what the show's aim is, but I don't recall any halflings in the Silmarillion

A lot of the reviews talk about that as a source, not sure if that’s come from production team or just ignorance of Silmarillion and book of unfinished tales etc etc

I think it looks like a train wreck. The casting is atrocious, Squish face as Elrond? In fact all the Elves look wrong. They're supposed to posses an ethreal beauty not look like they work at LIDL.
The dwarves rather than being fierce and powerful have followed the comedy bumpkin style of the Hobbit films and the Halflings are going to be painfully hammy in the brief glimpse.
The backgrounds and CGI look good, though you'd expect that with the budget but the wardrobe department have made the same mistake as they did with Wheel of Time, the characters don;t look like they actually live in the environment. It looks manufactured.
Extremely low expectations for this.

Looked better than I expected (especially after reading the comments here).
Not sure about the super-young casting though.
Are Elrond and Galadriel going to be the main characters? Not sure about that idea.
