He's a thespian now, don't you know. I think he'll probably be good.

Also the only person I've heard of in the whole show is Lenny bloody Henry... who is apparently a hobbit. If I was looking for an actor to play a hobbit and an ideal person to play one in a huge production, his name wouldn't be anywhere near any lists I'd drawn up. I think Kevin Hart got cancelled.

Ah well, there you go. I've not seen him in anything for years. Last I saw he was slagging off anyone who was white in a comedy routine.

Yikes. Got to say that trailer doesn't fill me with hope. Feels more Hobbit films than LOTR.
Rather than going for super generic "epic" fantasy and CGI they could have simply hinted at some kind of story line.

To be fair, a superbowl commercial was always going to be more action packed than story led

My only gripe is how clean looking it is really. It doesn't look lived in, in the same way the original LotR trilogy did. Which I know is because it's mostly CGI over being on a grubby New Zealand set, but still. More filth plz.

Can't see enough in a minute to put me up or down to be honest. It looks the part so far so I'm still looking forward to it.

The trouble is - and I think everyone here, everyone else not here, the people that made the show and everyone else in existence knows this - is that it won't live up to Jackson's first three LotR films. I'm not sure anything ever will. In my mind they are pretty much the definitive version of Tolkein's world, and the best of his stories.

Looked fine to me, and as expected for a 1 minute teaser aimed at American sports fans. I imagine we'll get some more detailed trailers over the coming months.

The person hanging off the ice cliff looks entirely CGI.

Hang on, I thought, judging by the seething outrage on Twitter in the last few weeks, that this was meant to take place before the king, before the fellowship, before the ring, and before black people existed?

I didn't think the arrow catch was believable. I haven’t watched any of this, but your post reminds me of The Mythbusters “doing” arrow catching. They hired a twitchy-as-fuck American ninja, who literally calls himself “Arrow Catcher”, and he definitely couldn’t do it I think they proved via robots and so on that it really isn’t possible.

It looks like a film but isn't one. Definitely shows some of the budget there. I do wish the trend for using CGI for things that would look so much better with real people/props/landscapes/whatever would do one though. I hate the look of most modern films that overuse CGI.

Urgh, just noticed on the Youtube comments (I don't know why I thought reading them would be a good idea) it's overrun with the following quote:
"Зло не может создать ничего нового, оно может только испортить и разрушить то, что изобрели или создали добрые силы". - Дж. Р.Р. Толкин.
“Evil is not able to create anything new, it can only distort and destroy what has been invented or made by the forces of good” - J.R.R. Tolkien
Which seems to be some kind of protest from the Tolkien zealots about this not being true to the source material. Why is everyone such a fucking baby these days?

It's fully mainstream now so the gatekeepers have got to come out shreiking about how they liked Tolkien first.

Otto gatekept first. He was the first person I ever came across who genuinely lost his mind about the movie adaptations.

There's something cheap and cheerful about the cinematography. Very 'flat'.

It looked ok to me, though all these generic CGi fantasy worlds are starting to look the same. The LOTR movies may have started it, and their cgi was a bit iffy in places, but the cinematography and lighting made them look more real.
Cautiously excited, although I do wonder if you switched out shots between this and the Wheel of Time trailer, would anyone notice?
I imagined it looking more dark and solemn, but maybe that's because the only bits I remember from the Silmarillion were all about doomed love quests and being lost in desolate lands and then eaten by a dragon.
I did laugh when my daughter's comment (having never seen LotR) was "That looks like the troll in Harry Potter", given at the time of Fellowship there was a lot of discussion about who had the best CGI troll. (It's definitely Fellowship btw)

My main concern is the slightly off lighting and the “too clean” look.
Also don’t love the look of the harfoot character. Not sure about the bird’s nest in her hair.
Other than that I thought it looked promising. It’s not going to come close to the trilogy but I’m optimistic it’ll be a worthwhile addition to the LOTR movies.

I don't feel I've seen enough to judge whether it'll be good. It looks fine, which is to say, it looks like a fantasy production that's cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make. Nothing jumped out and felt fake or not particularly LOTR-y, if that makes sense. I'm torn between feeling like it'll end up being a flat watered-down prequel to the movies, without any of their charm or weirdness AND be a bad adaptation of the source material; BUT also thinking - how else would you do it? If you're going to adapt bits of the Silmarillion, I think either going macro on one story (eg Turin?) or doing what they're doing, condensing it and re-writing it to turn it into one digestible epic narrative, are the only ways to go. They've picked a lane, it makes sense, and good luck to them. I remain cautiously optimistic. Also... I did laugh when my daughter's comment (having never seen LotR) was "That looks like the troll in Harry Potter", given at the time of Fellowship there was a lot of discussion about who had the best CGI troll. (It's definitely Fellowship btw) ...who the hell was claiming the Harry Potter troll was better?! Ten year olds?! I seem to remember it being one of the few effects that really stood out as a bit below-par in the first film (although it's weird to think that believable CG creatures, that looked real and solid, were still in their infancy in 2001). LOTR has the best troll this side of Poppy and Branch.

iirc Harry Potter came out out a month or two before Fellowship, and the troll *was* pretty impressive at the time. Then fellowship came out a month or two later and its troll blew the HP one out of the water. That was a period where cgi stuff was improving at a huge pace.
Maybe more correct to say that fellowship's troll popped up from nowhere and powerbombed HP's troll, just as everyone thought it had nailed being a troll.
