I remember when Blizzard were claiming that they wouldn’t be infected with Activision’s evil when they agreed to merge into the biomass. It has me thinking about whether they’ll infect Microsoft when it consumes them, or if we’d even notice any difference. Acti blizzard is a drop in the ocean of Microsoft. Also evil, Microsoft? Lolz

I don't even remember when the Acti-Blizzard merger happened. But I've not really given a flying fuck about a Blizzard game since the WoW Beta when I was at Uni. I'm not sure that the blob affected that particularly.

The main thing I’m aware it affected was the launch of Diablo 3, which was a pretty massive PR disaster.

That company of clowns.. news.tfw2005.com/2023/07/28/sdcc-2023-hasbro-show-floor-qa-legacy-studio-series-video-games-more-488215Q: Possible to re-release the Activision TF games to coincide with Gamer Edition? A: Sadly, apparently Activision’s not sure what hard drives they’re on in their building. When a company eats a company that eats a company things get lost, and that’s very frustrating. Hope is that now that the deal is moving forward with Microsoft and Xbox that they’ll go through all of the archives and every hard drive to find it all, because it’s an easy Game Pass add. We want those games back up for people to have a chance to play. Apparently they’ve walked back on that, apologizing to Activision for claiming they’ve lost the hard drive (I mean, they ported a few of those to Xbox One for a time, before they lost the license again), but it does make one optimistic that they want to re-re-release them, and put them on GamePass. Hopefully they’re Series native ports since the brief XB1 ports were pre-X. Gimme 4K60.

I wish they'd release the Transformers games on the Switch. It seems like the perfect home, but there's only a turn based tactics game (which looks ok-ish I guess...)

MS have announced they have proposed to sell the Activision cloud gaming rights to Ubisoft so no game can release exclusively on MS platform.

Weird move... Presumably that's instead of rather than in addition to Game Pass?
MS must be looking at bundling Ubi+ in with GP in some way, perhaps use it to justify a big price bump when it all happens.
Also only mentions cloud streaming rights, not subscription downloads, though surely it wouldn't make sense to separate them...

Think they know how unimportant cloud gaming is right now.
This doesn't really hurt MS but CMA still being awkward it seems despite MS being able to close.

So games will be in game pass but not cloud enabled, and if you want to stream them you'll need ubisoft+.
I'm alright with that, in my experience xcloud is a way worse streaming service than U+.

Actually I might take that back. No cross play with cloud and console takes away the only useful benefit that game streaming has for me.

Maybe I read it incorrectly but Smiths letter made it sound like they simply won't release them exclusively on MS cloud service rather than not at all?

What a consumer friendly change.
Regulation really don't a great job there!
I mean I get the opposition to the merger in the first place but this concession is just so bleh and it doesn't benefit the customer at all, only a third party company. It's so obviously ridiculous but by the same token addresses the cloud competition concern.
It was a dumb tact to take and this is a dumb outcome if it's approved. Thankfully I'm in the EU.

Could read it either way and I hope you're correct. But "restructuring to acquire a narrower set of rights" and "transfers the cloud gaming rights" have me a little worried.

I guess we all await clarification on what we consumers will eventually be getting (and at what price).

They're a third-party company. If MS were going to sell streaming rights to someone, unless they went outside the core industry (eg Amazon), I guess it could only be Ubi or EA.
Anyway, if the sticking point was cloud streaming, this seems like the fairest solution I suppose. Doubt it'll get me subscribing to U+ any time soon mind.

While not ideal, and we’ll need more information about what this means for streaming these games on Xbox (will Ubi licence them back to Microsoft?), this seems like a more targeted solution to the CMA’s concerns than the rumour about selling all of the rights to streaming in the U.K. to someone like EE; hopefully this wraps up the CMA’s assessment quickly - this has dragged on for way too long now.

I too hope that these giant corporations can resolve their ability to transfer ownership/vast sums of cash to each other quickly. It keeps me up at night worrying how long it’s taking them.

I think most just want this part over. It's been the largest story in gaming for what feels like 5 years now. It's just gone on much longer than it needed to.
It's holding up my Blur 2!

Previous joke aside, it’s still odd that so many are wishing it to be wrapped up quickly. It affects none of us. It’s also very easy to ignore if you choose to.

Well, I think it’s fair to ask if this is a good use of public funds as a U.K. taxpayer. Is all of this really producing a better outcome for U.K. consumers? Only time will tell, but they’ve spent a lot of time and resources on this.
