Considering there are other reports that MS and the CMA have agreed on a "divestiture" (presumably barring Activision games from xCloud in the UK) I wonder if this is just a sabre-rattling prelude to an eventual deal.

Hope so. This was announced Jan last year but honestly feels like it's been going for 2-3 years. It's going to be the talking point of this gen.
This year is being overshadowed by it which is a shame because 2023 has been a fantastic year for gaming IMO.

But a) I do think the platformer audience is definitely larger on Nintendo consoles than any other, and b) if they were to revive Banjo, I’d rather either Rare themselves make it, or contract it to Playtonic, since Microsoft isn’t above partnering with third parties. I think what was vital to Rare games of that era was the quirky dry British sense of humor, and I don’t think a team like Toys For Bob would nail that.

It sold a bit less than the trilogy in its first month but made more money due to the higher price tag is all I could see. Releasing during a busy period was to blame.

Yeah, all the licensed stuff is a no go. I mean just a basic understanding of how licensing works would tell you that stuff will not be released on Gamepass. I think the person writing that blog seems to be confused about the difference between owning an IP and just publishing a game.
