I assume that gamepass is going for the Netflix strategy. Make huge losses in the hope of getting a huge number of users. Then at some point there will be price increases, fragmentation, etc..
Subscription services for games are going to have the same level of impact they had for tv. The kind of games that get made will be different. The length etc.. will be different. They'll disappear without trace or move services when you're half way through. And I guess in a few years it'll all be cheap filler junk. But on the other hand they'll enable devs to make games that they would never have gotten funding/approval for beforehand.
I've been waiting for Steam to go all in on a subscription service for ages, but they don't seem interested.
I was thinking recently that a subscription model similar to mobiles might work for things like VR headsets. Instead of the huge initial outlay, you'd just pay a monthly fee that included games and hardware rental.

I'm just bored of this whole shitshow now but it's going to drag on and on.
Microsoft - take the £70bn and pump even a fraction of it into the numerous studios you already own and bring in some people who know how to manage game studios too.

Really does feel like this has been going on for about 5 years now.
One interesting bit was Bobby Kunt confirming the next Nintendo console is on par with Xbox One/PS4

:-D There has to be someone here who bought the standard edition on the Series X and could confirm it's 60fps and doesn't take two years to load? I can confirm Moi aussi.

I've been waiting for Steam to go all in on a subscription service for ages, but they don't seem interested. They're not going to. Firstly they're not an actual publisher and have little interest in doing so, they didn't throw money at exclusives when Epic were trying to. Secondly they just announced they're no longer doing season passes for DOTA2, as nobody buys them. They looked at the data on subscription adjacent things and realised people don't actually pay for them. From my PoV paying for X publisher subscriptions per month like Netflix, Now, Disney etc. Would actually be way more money than I spend on games now so seems like a fucking expensive but of bullshit to me.

Instead of the huge initial outlay, you'd just pay a monthly fee that included games and hardware rental. Already done (well, the games bit, not the hardware). There is Viveport that does a monthly sub to access games. When I first got my HTC Vive (which came with a free month) it just let you choose 2 or 3 games to access for the month, but looks like you might be able to access as much as you want now. Think Meta might be doing one as well, although that might be a bit more like a PS+ sort of thing.

If they doubled the monthly cost but threw in a VR headset it'd be much more accessible, like mobile companies do.

I think the issue as well as the high cost of investment is that it's the kind of thing that a more casual audience would pick up for a bit then let it gather dust much like the Wii. That is probably the equal barrier to entry, just trying to make it appear as if it something you should keep coming back to. Well that and all the motion sickness.

Yeah, but unlike the Wii, those people would still be paying the monthly subscription that they forgot to cancel after 2 years.

Yeah, realised that's what you meant right after posting. I guess you could say the same for lots of products though. The cost of a VR headset isn't that much different to a console and you don't see companies doing monthly subscription to console hardware. (I'm sure someone will now share lots of links to people doing this) And really, when you think about the tech in VR, it isn't that expensive. Lots of people would spend the price tag if it were for a TV or monitor, which is effectively what you are getting. The main issue with VR adoption is that you really have to experience it yourself and it is a lot to spend on something that might make you vom.

I was actuallyAKSULLY gonna say that I was a bit surprised MS haven't gone down that route already, given that they're clearly trying to move away from the console as a profit making business to the subscription.
I'd be kinda tempted by that, if it was available here.

It started back with the Xbox One S and X, I believe.
Have you looked into it? I wouldn’t be surprised if it were available in Japan. How else would they have sold the 50 consoles out there?

What's first, Avatar 3 or this being over?
Edit - just seen this means MS are now free to close the deal before the 18th then try to work something out with the CMA or take a big fine.
All companies now ready to work together..

Popped over to GAF to watch the fallout, wasn't disappointed!
Just want it to be over now, good or bad, the toxicity surrounding the whole thing has been utterly exhausting for the most part. Hopefully it means I have to look at less Jim Ryan memes.

It has been entertaining at least to see how many people closely align themselves to a consumer product enough to get offended on behalf of it.

CMA talking to MS now.
Is this finally the Endgame?
Half the developers in the universe are about to disappear.
