I had a PS3 and PS4 but when it came to next gen, I went Xbox purely due to exclusives. You might go Xbox next gen if they keep grabbing games you like and making them exclusive. There's also PC sales. I would expect the long term goal is getting people on GP which is recurrent rather than the sale of one game

Yeah, both parties will pretty much say and do anything in order to prevail here - Jim Ryan's probably getting the Xbox logo tattooed on his left buttock as I type, just in case he needs to drop trou in court on Monday and proclaim that Microsoft are clearly the console kings. It's all theatre.
I doubt I'd go Xbox in future, because I'm too invested in the PlayStation ecosystem (financially, not emotionally, just to be clear!). When consoles stop having disc drives, I'll probably go PC.
When it comes to the issue of exclusivity, there are probably slivers of truth in every scenario posited in this thread... but as I say, I'm less concerned about the reasons than the outcome.

Switching from PlayStation to Xbox for the exclusives is a new one

As for the Sony eco system, you can still keep your PS5 to play whatever you've already got and just get new things for whatever MS console you got next. If you did want to buy anything again, just get it cheap in a sale
But I'm generally more pragmatic with these things. It's not a life changing decision for me really. If push came to shove (ie. I could be arsed) I'd get a PS5 as well. It's ugly though and takes up space

CDPR would’ve been a possibility prior to this whole kerfuffle, since their whole MO for awhile seemed to be ALL THE WESTERN RPGs. But I doubt the courts would let them gobble up another studio now, whether the Activision buyout goes through or not.

I'm still surprised that Sony haven't bought Square Enix yet, it would feel like a formality if they did at this point.

CDPR came out very quickly to shoot down the Sony buying them claims the other month. Don't think they plan to be bought by anyone.
This will be the last Billion + buy MS do/ lattempt any time soon IMO.

First, I'd shed real tears; then I'd stick an entire box of drawing pins into my Phil Spencer voodoo doll; and then... yeah, I'd consider it.
I *really* hope this doesn't happen, though, and not just for selfish reasons!
See, I freakin' love multi-platform releases like Elden Ring, Diablo, Resident Evil, Dead Space, etc. - even when I'm not interested in a given game, it's still really nice to see other people here being excited for it, and exclusivity just leaves some people on the sidelines.
When a new release lives up to the hype (e.g. RE4), it's cool to read everyone's excited comments; when a new release bombs hard (e.g. Callisto), it's entertaining to see everyone* dunking on it.
The fewer cross-platform releases we get, the less I get to enjoy this facet of our shared hobby.
* Except Wunty, most of the time

Too much empathy for a true gamer. You need to laugh at people who can't play the stuff you can

CDPR also own GoG. They have a huge revenue stream of their own beyond game development, similar to Valve (well, except Valve make next to bugger all these days). I can't imagine them being bought by anyone in the near future.
As for the ActiBlizz acquisition, I'm a little worried that if the PlayStation/Xbox worldwide market share is roughly 70/30 as Microsoft claim, then they're going to absolutely need this deal (or, more specifically: Starfield) to sell a tonne of consoles this gen to make this a financially viable buy. I can't see Game Pass subs at the current numbers keeping them going indefinitely.

Gog doesn't make any money and was as recently as 2021 losing them money.

Wow yeah, I just checked GoG's financials and they're actually pretty poor. They are making a profit now, but it's a relatively small sum.
Maybe they'd be more open to an offer than I thought?

I guess if they made heaps of money via GOG they’d wind up like Valve. “Why make games? Why work at all?”

Do we think Beth has a PS5 version of Starfield ready to go if the buyout fails to go through ?
If it does then the 3bilion bailout payment would in effect be a very expensive 'timed exclusive' payment.

It’s ok, at least for the first year lots of Xbox owners won’t be able to play Starfield properly either.

Didn’t one of their previous big games come to PS3 maybe a year after Xbox? Oblivion or Skyrim maybe?
I recall Skyrim being a disaster on PS3 due to its awkward memory setup.

Bethesda purchase was a couple of years back and it's unrelated to the Activision blizzard acquisition so I'm going to go with "no".

Release it on PS5, but have it require a monthly subscription (that happens to give you access to Game Pass on xbox/pc).

Oblivion, but even in that case, 360 released a year earlier so it wasn’t really a time exclusive deal. Was kind of funny how they were both planned for their respective console’s launch day, then both got pushed back to March-ish. You would think the additional 9 or so months from when Oblivion launched on 360 would’ve been enough to finish the PS3 version on time, but apparently not.

Reading all the articles reporting the FTC stuff and reasons for buying Bethesda and i started conflating them both. Nothing to see here move along.

Given that Starfield has been in development for between 5-10 years, they almost certainly had builds running on PS hardware before MS acquired them.
However, I think the chances of it ever coming to playstation are exactly zero. Even with the Series X price hike coming next month, I think they'll market the hell out it and shift a tonne of hardware.

I’m not really aware of a major system-seller exclusive that Microsoft has - I’ve read Halo Infinite was not well-received and their either titles may be strong but niche - and I can’t even begrudge them wanting to have one massive hyped game to themselves. I’m also just kind-of relieved that my personal interest in Starfield is on a similar level to my interest in Avatar 2. If Microsoft want to crush my spirit they can announce that Bethesda have been removed from Fallout and some kind of RPG-writing dream-team have been put together at Obsidian.

As a grown adult, if you want a game that much, wouldn't you just get the hardware it's on?
