Weekend at Bernies style Stadia revival on the cards to make fake competition for the cloud stuff, or every MS employee using Luna with a prime sub to increase stats.

I assume this comment was referring to myself?
Perhaps you should refer to my recent comments on Eurogamer where I have been highly critical of Microsoft recently. Fan boy I am not.
As an owner of both a PS5 and Series X, I do not believe Sony have enough competition and have been using their dominant position to keep a stranglehold on this industry. I was hoping that this deal would break that stranglehold and put both companies more on an equal footing.
Microsoft will appeal...and they will likely fail. The one of two things is likely to happen...
1. MS pull out of the gaming industry. This will be bad for everyone. 2. MS goes on a spending spree buying up much smaller studios and exclusive content which goes under the radar of these regulating bodies.
Not sure any outcome is good for any of us.

It will not break the stranglehold, MS need to make and release better games, they're doing that but this deal wouldn't have solved that problem cause Activision make shit games and the shit game most people care about was going to be on everything anyway.

But at the moment they are struggling to compete because Sony can throw money at publishers to keep content off other platforms. The dominant player abuses their position to maintain that position.
Exclusive content for COD, Hogwarts Legacy etc. Exclusive rights to Final Fantasy, blocking releases on other platforms. Sony are shitters for this. They have gotten away with it for so long and I would love to see more competition.

"This report is also a disservice to UK citizens, who face increasingly dire economic prospects, and we will need to reassess our growth strategy in the UK." Sounds like threat to me. The concerning thing is that if this is the response from a peddler of something as inconsequential as videogames, imagine how viciously everyone else is trying to have our pants down. Fucking hell, we really are an embarassment.

These are all things MS did during the 360 gen. MS also, clearly, have a fuck ton of cash, so they could also use it to make better games, or 3rd party exclusives. Instead, they've decided to buy another publisher and absorb their entire library again. Every company has shitty practices. The thing that Sony and Nintendo do that gives them their "hold" on the industry 30 years in is the focus on making really good games. It's the most important part of being a gaming giant. It's what MS really need to focus on. None of their purchases have seemingly done that to any meaningful degree.

I knew that someone would respond with "but Microsoft did it too...". I know, and it doesn't make it right.
You are correct though, they could certainly use that money elsewhere to make exclusive content and even work in close partnership with other developers and publishers. $68B could certainly buy a shit tonne of exclusive content for their Gamepass service.

I dunno, dude - 1. seems highly unlikely to my layman's eyes, while 2. looks like a distinct possibility regardless of whether or not the Activision acquisition eventually goes through.
I fully accept that Sony has a history of shitty behaviour in this regard, and I'm not at all interested in a game of '*My* multi-billion-dollar corporate behemoth is better than *your* multi-billion-dollar corporate behemoth' (not a dig at you, by the way - just my feeling on the console wars topic in general!) but MS following suit isn't going to benefit gamers in general. "Two wrongs..." and all that jazz, y'know?

As I’ve stated previously, Sony are a fraction of the size of Microsoft. The notion they have a “stranglehold” on the industry is fucking nonsense. Sony can throw money at publishers for exclusive content you say; what, like the US$69 billion Microsoft are paying? You sound like an imbecile. Sony have sold more consoles by doing a better job and appealing to more people, that‘s it. At any time, they could shit out another PS3 and go down again, or Microsoft could step up and put out better content and more attractive hardware. Microsoft could definitely afford to do that. Or Nintendo will whip out a new Wii-like innovation and everyone will flock in that direction.

As also stated previously, the MS gaming division is dwarfed by the Sony gaming division. You keep making the same very bad comparison.

I mean we've seen evidence of Sony being able to use its market place dominance to keep games off Xbox without having to pay ridiculous amounts of money.

So what? You must be as dumb as shit to not understand this. The office 365 department arent going to put their hands in their pockets to prop up the gaming division. Divisions within mega-corps are effectively their own entities and live and die on their own. You must be dumb as shit to repeatedly not understand this.

Fwiw, I don't have a dog in this race.
Anti-competitive practices are shitty, regardless of whether it's Microsoft or Sony (or anyone else) that's doing it.
Edit: ironic autocorrect. 😁

Gamepass is great, but if Sony and the PlayStation is a trip to the local Everyman Cinema to see the latest movie complete with freshly grilled bacon double, Gamepass is definitely an evening in with Netflix and a rustlers microwave effort.
Though almost shamefully after a day in the office, walking the dog, making tea and keeping the house ship shape.. I do just rock the series X with gamepass and it fills my needs.
Gamepass appeals to the masses to a certain extent and people like me maybe, but the hardcore, those that spend the money will stay where the latest and best games are at. With Microsoft seemingly out of ideas regarding to new IP, Sony isn't going to lose it's stranglehold anytime soon.

I don't know what it is with Xbox, they have the money, and Phil seems to know what he's doing. Maybe it's company culture or something? Maybe because of making audio/video equipment Sony somehow knows how to talk to artistic people and get what they want in terms of games?

From what I've read, Microsoft pay the gamepass devs in relation to how popular a particular game is on the service. Absolutely zero risk on Microsofts part. If people are happy and subscriptions are increasing with 6 month old Fifa and an underperforming Battlefield game, I guess they don't see the need to invest. Crap really. When something becomes the next big thing, just buy them.. Or attempt to, even if it's bloody Activision. Almost feel dirty now.
