Regardless this has most definitely shat all over MS's E3 plans (yes I know E3 isn't a thing, but you know what I mean).

I don't know what it is with Xbox, they have the money, and Phil seems to know what he's doing. Maybe it's company culture or something? Maybe because of making audio/video equipment Sony somehow knows how to talk to artistic people and get what they want in terms of games? From everything I've read Microsoft's hands off attitude with their studios is both a gift and a massive curse plus the biggest thing is how they effectively crippled themselves during the Xbox One era with Don Matrick closing down their studios and their weird focus on TV TV TV which we all know how well that turned out.

From the outside it feels like a little too much power was given to too few people at various MS studios. Definitely shades of 'we know better than the fans of the series' with things like Gears of War and Halo. Good game designers aren't necessarily the best choices to be project leads.

Interesting that cloud gaming is the main reason to reject. Are we really in a position where that needs to be considered yet? I would think the numbers for cloud gaming are tiny at the moment and can't see that changing significantly this decade unless our internet infrastructure improves dramatically. I don't think cloud gaming is anywhere near as far away as you think, especially with MS. As a company they've always been far more interested in thin clients and server driven software support. Also, internet infrastructure has had a huge boost in recent months with 5G connected routers in the home, allowing almost anyone an affordable, more or less symmetrical gigabit connection. And MS has the backend hardware with Azure and the ability to make and market a fag packet sized xbox for 20 quid with an inflated Game Pass fee to stay connected to your account and pay for your server time. I feel like traditional consoles, and computers in general, have outlived their purpose in the current form, and we're more than capable of moving beyond them. Gaming as a whole will become a service. Not going to try and tell anyone that's a good thing, because I fucking loath the idea, but it's right on top of us.

It's a reasonable assumption about cloud gaming but on the other hand you had analysts predicting the PS4 was going to be an Android streaming box like 15 years ago

Still needs the infrastructure to be up to scratch. Getting there in the UK, but in the US, the challenges are more significant.

Aye, it's very bandwidth heavy, so also not really ideal in a country like the US where the majority of fast connections have data caps.*
* Totally pulling that out of my arse, but a large number definitely do.

Meh, whenever I've dabbled with it the latency is exactly the same at is always was
There must be something to it though considering the decision. But like others, it currently seems weird to me that the pushback is due to cloud gaming and not the game library. I never even considered it a factor behind the purchase, I figured MS were already well ahead of the curve behind the scenes

Yeah, no.

No, 5G is almost everywhere here now, I have 1gbit symmetrical - sort of, network depending etc. More like 800mbit down and 200 up most of the time. (no data cap, dfunked)

I've never looked into it but I'd have assumed 5G was not a good option for latency?

I've never looked into it but I'd have assumed 5G was not a good option for latency? Ping is more than fine. Maybe a couple of ms slower, but 1-2ms is nothing. Geforce Now was like playing on my own computer, just with all the graphics up to 11. The tech is absolutely there. Actually let me test the ping. ed: It's 6ms faster. Pinging google.com on my old wired connection gave me 32ms, I get 26 now.

It can depend on the network. Some use 4g for up, which will be awful for latency. Proper 5g is very low latency though and should be great for streaming games.

My 5g signal gives me 72 ping and a very variable DL speed. Current saying 32mbps, but it's frequently more like 5mbps.

Those are solidly 3G to 4G speeds. This is what I get.

Well I've just tested EE 5G here with full signal and it's 45ms ping. My WiFi is 10ms. If you have to double that for a rough guess at the whole round trip (EDIT: you don't), plus whatever processing goes on at the data centre then that would be unbearable for me.
I could be wrong on all of this though. And arguably derailing the thread anyway, sorry!

Jesus, don't tell me the US has finally overtaken the UK in terms of internet.
I don't think it's derailing, the UK isn't MS's primary interest, they will be looking at the US market to make their decisions on cloud gaming.

Those are solidly 3G to 4G speeds. Yeah, tell me about it. Connected and showing as 5g though, but I suspect I'm outside the actual range (despite 5g maps showing me as being in the coverage area).

South Wales here and Stadia worked all times of day while Xcloud runs best at midnight and later. Depends of the data centres nearby I guess.

It's better than I expected, but still some pretty big gaps in terms of gigabit symmetrical and proper 5G (and don't forget, what we get for 5G at the moment, isn't really 5G - it's 4G+ really. broadbandmap.fcc.gov/area-summary/fixed?

Our phone service has always been shit, though. I was in sweden the other week and got a full 4G signal down a limestone mine in the middle of fucking nowhere, something I struggle to get in my own front room.

I'm sure our government will stand by the findings of the regulator. They definitely won't crumple at the mere mention of money.
Nope. Not our lot... Definitely not.
