I nearly asked two dumb-as-fuck questions as well.
Anyway, got the Dell. The super-cute metal chick salesperson probably thought she'd worked her womanly wiles on me, complementing my band t-shirt and all that, but no, my mind was already made up.

As soon as I've finished marvelling at how much white space there is either side of the forum now

Damn, Lizard, you're crazier than I when it comes to comparing products. You've got the thing and have 90 tabs open.

Damn, Lizard, you're crazier than I when it comes to comparing products. You've got the thing and have 90 tabs open. Well, I don't do a very fucking good job of it because this monitor isn't the one I thought it was - it's the non-gaming version, no 'G' at the end of the serial number. What a fucking eejit. All open and set up now so I can't take it back. Main difference are that the refresh rate only goes up to 100hz as opposed to 144hz and no HDR. Not so bothered about the refresh rate as I'm generally fine with 60fps, but I would've liked HDR. Oh well, might be able to sell it around Black Friday 2024 and rectify my error. I can't even blame the cute assistant.

I imagine her sales pitch was “it’s curved innit” while striking a pose.

She didn't have a sales pitch. We talked about gigs for a while and then I said 'I want this' pointing to the webpage on my phone. Clearly I needed a greasy nerd to save me from myself.

F1 '23 did look pretty good though. Forza repeatedly crashed despite trying Special K manipulation. Currently re-downloading downloading Cyberpunk - just under four hours to go, I love this internet.
ArcGIS Pro will be much easier to use on this though, as will Ableton I expect. Good for Excel too, I guess...
Still a fucking idiot though.

Do they not have a "no questions asked" returns policy then?

Probably not after I've broken the seal and assembled everything.

No harm in asking, especially since it's a genuine error.

Good thing I listened to you lot rather than my Englishness - manager was happy to exchange. Unfortunately, they sold the last of the Samsungs this morning. Metal chick tried to swing me straight up refund, but the manager said store credit only so I'm now the proud owner of a $674 JB Hi-Fi gift card. Website says they can deliver the Samsung next week, so there we go.
Fired up Cyberpunk on the laptop's HDR screen and it looked heaps better, so definitely the right choice.
EDIT: ordered the Samsung and the balance covered delivery and some crappy Logitech desk speakers.

This is a bit embarrassing, but please bear with me: I treated myself to an 32" Alienware AW3225QF monitor during Dell's Black Friday sales. Set it up last night and everything is great. Compared to my previous 27" Samsung curved VA monitor, the new one is huge (ooh matron) and I'm in awe of the real estate available. I haven't played around its various settings (apart from lowering the brightness/contrast and some pretty basic HDR settings), I'm still not used to the higher DPI setting and I've only used it for entertainment not work. So far, so good... ...however, there's one thing I didn't pay attention to when researching the monitor. Apart from my desktop PC, I connected both my Xbox SeX and PS5 (same as before) to that, utilizing both HDMI and Display Port slots, but the monitor does not have any speakers (which I already knew) nor a 3.5 jack to pass sound to my PC speakers (that was my previous setup as well). So, that leaves headphones (wireless or wired to the controller) as the only option to have some sound from either console, which is OK but not ideal. So, my question is: any other ideas? Could a soundbar work here? Do soundbars have two HDMI ports (for input/output) and pass through visuals to the monitor and audio to the speakers? Would there be any interference with the visuals? I'd hate to have an intermediate step between source (console) and monitor messing things up...
/first world problems, amirite?

So you need to connect a PC, Xbox & a PS5 to a sound source, be that PC speakers or a soundbar or something else?

The 3225QF supports proper eARC so if your soundbar is an ARC one then that’ll be fine. I run mine through an AV receiver and it works well enough, with the irritating quirk that sound only runs through properly when HDMI-CEC is on. They might have improved ARC with eARC but CEC still sucks.

My previous monitor (which also didn't have any speakers of its own) had a 3.5 sound output jack, that I connected to my PC speakers via their Aux port and all sound coming from the HDMI sources (Xbox/PS5) would be heard from them.

Currently don't have a soundbar and, ideally, I would prefer not to purchase anything else atm (already got some monthly instalments for the monitor), but purchasing an appropriate soundbar down the line could do. I'll look into this eARC to learn more, but I'd appreciate some pointers if you've got some.

It works the same as how you would do it with your TV. In the case of multi input soundbars, your soundbar/receiver has multiple inputs and then it squirts the video signal into the monitor. Any latency in the chain is from video processing; modern receivers have a “direct” mode which skips that step and minimises lag. I’ve certainly never noticed it. ARC/CEC isn’t required because everything is handled by your audio device.
The ARC part comes in when you’re using something connected to your other HDMI port (in my case the PS5 because my receiver won’t do 4k at 120hz). The screen displays the signal from the HDMI device as normal but the audio makes it through the other HDMI port to your audio device as well. You’re not likely to get any lag in this mode since you’re connecting the video directly to the screen. Something like a Sonos Arc relies on this because it doesn’t have a pass-through port. Since the 3225QF only has the two HDMI ports I think you’ll find that a pain. I haven’t tried it but apparently it does pass through audio from the DP, at least in Windows.

Once again, thanks for the detailed reply.
So, in other words (and please correct me if I'm wrong), eARC uses a HDMI port to send the audio to the audio devise (i.e. the soundbar), which means you cannot connect two consoles through HDMI plus a PC through DP, as one of the monitor's two HDMI ports is "wasted" for sound. Such a strange, short-sighted design for a high-end Alienware/Dell product; I hope the cost-cutting for not including a 3.5 mm audio jack was worth it...

Well, they're not the ones footing the additional bill for the soundbar*, so... *(beyond potential loss of sales, but let's face it, in this case the effect is likely small)

There are soundbars which do offer pass-through as well so all you’d need is one with one extra port, but they’re not universal, likely because you get 4-5 HDMI ports on any decent telly. And yes, I miss both the USB-C input and combo Toslink/line out jack on my previous monitor. The video quality is so, so much better though.

I'm in this same situation with my son at the moment. He has an old flat panel TV (logik brand) but prefers to game on a 1080 dell monitor. He swaps the console output when he just wants to watch tv. This old office monitor has no sound output so the only option for sound from the series s when on the monitor is a via the pad 3.5mm which sucks when he plays on m+k.
I purchased a small splitter that took a hdmi in and split it to 2 hdmi out but with a 3.5mm output as well so he could connect a cheap sound bar with another 3.5 for when he wants to heaphones. Everything works for the monitor/audio side but sadly the TV refuses to see the signal from the splitter otherwise it would've been perfect. We're keeping it as I can't find an alternative and we'll eventually just replace his TV and monitor with a newer 4k TV vrr panel like I did with my eldest

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated!
