I've been planning on getting an ultrawide for a while as I move house soon and will have a dedicated office.
The only gaming a do is on the Switch (besides emu on a low powered PC for really old stuff) and I want a horizontal monitor for TATE mode, so I'm trying to decide what I can get away with size wise in order to fit both onto a desk and be in a good position to use an arcade stick on the desk too (and have a laptop somewhere).

Ultra wide screens are probably good for managerial types of jobs, where you don't really do much but flip flop between many applications with the intent of appearing busy and important.
At least that's my impression, because I work as software dev, and all the manager type guys have those, while the people who do real work prefer two regular monitors, and most coders use one of them rotated to 9:16, to display more lines of code.

Surely you're effectively getting the benefits of two monitors but without multiple cables and a big borders in the middle?

In my experience the pure management types all want the smallest, most svelte, laptop they can get. Not having a static monitor is a badge of honour - they don't have to sit tied to a desk like the software factory proles.
Such a strange take, zagibu, but if that's your experience that's your experience. I've been a software dev for a quarter of a century, and this mahoosive ultra wide solves problems I didn't even know I had (and yes, in my Python years, I too rocked the dual monitor setup with one in portrait).
As I say, the ultra wide setup in the office is such an improvement that I'm now looking to duplicate it at home (I'm 50/50 remote/office) and retire my multiple monitors.

We've been 'hot design' with WFH at least one day a week for over 10 years so desks are all setup with docking stations and 2x24" Monitors, probably quite typical, I'd love us to get Ultrawides like Phattso if we're ever forced back.

Yeah, those exist here, too, but of those, everybody knows that they do absolutely fuck all the whole day long, and they know that everyone knows, so the need to appear busy does not come up.

I upgraded from 34" ultrawide to 49" ultrawide last year. Was hesitant to do so, but so glad I did now. It's just amazing for everything. Great for work, awesome for games. My fear was hearing people complain about having to turn their neck to see the left and right hand sides of the screen, but it's just not an issue.
Get one!

PS: I'm a software dev. zag is talking waffle. Give me three monitors or give me death. I'd love properly ridiculous ultra-wide at home but can't justify it when work is littered with fairly decent 24 inchers just waiting to be relocated.

I went from a 27" 1440p screen to a 38" 1600p screen and I don't think I'd personally ever go back to 16:9 for work and definitely not for gaming.
I ended up selling my 1440p screen but I used it vertically for a while and it was bliss having that screen along side. Waiting to find a cheap 27" that I can use vertically again but if I could only have 1... 21:9 every single time.

Yeah fair - the monitors at my work have always been guff. My justification for getting a fancy monitor is that I basically spend upwards of 10 hours per day in front of it. Seems churlish to skimp on something I'm so reliant on.

I'm seriously toying with the idea of going ultrawide (ooer missus!) 27" 1440/144 is pretty nice, but I could do with a second screen that isn't my work laptop.
Any recommendations for something that's IPS, 1440 vertical, high refresh rate and hopefully has a built in KVM for two USB uplinks? (really miss that from my old Dell monitor)

I have an LG 1440p 34" 144hz Freesync that is very nice. Can't recall the numbering, but think it is 850 something. Lovely image quality. Don't think it has KVM though.
I did have a slightly issue after the first couple of months where the image became distorted, initially with lines appearing on, before getting worse. Had a bit of a nightmare getting it sorted with LG support, but eventually pulled in their head of customer service in the UK who managed to get it collected, repaired and returned within about 72 hours. I have read that it was an fault others have experienced, but not had a problem since (about a year ago it was fixed).

They could be had for about 550 to 600 notes before Christmas. Sold my old 34" for 300 quid to make way for it. Great upgrade. I have my PC plugged into it as well as my work MacBook. Great for both. Easy to switch sources. Use it for wedding photography editing. Powered by 3080 for gaming. Halo Infinite has been lovely. Runs brilliantly at native res without any faffing in the menus, although have since tweaked bits and bobs, but always a good sign when you load up a game and it just recognises 32:9 automatically.

1k for a 38 with the Dell warranty/screen guarantee isn't a bad deal at all. I'm tempted by the S2722QC to replace my old LG 4K which is getting pretty bad for image retention.
edit: estimated delivery March 7 - maybe not then.

So, for work, around 38" 3840x1600 is the way to go?

If you have the space, for sure. I ordered the AW3423DW OLED monitor first thing yesterday but they delayed me to late April

After some more changes to the delivery date, my OLED monitor has arrived. First impressions after about an hour or so with it:
- There's a fan but with my desktop PC on it's non-obtrusive. I can feel it pushing air around so it's definitely there. - The build quality is surprisingly flimsy for something over a grand in price, with creaky panels if I try and move it around by the sides to adjust position on my monitor arm. - The fringing is definitely 'a thing' but it's not too bad. It feels like it comes and goes a little depending on my distance from it. - This is an OLED panel alright: the blacks are very dark (though not perfectly dark in a lit room due to the choices they've made for anti-reflection coating) and the response time is insanely good. Going from a 120hz monitor that had quite a lot of overshoot in grey-to-grey transitions, Elden Ring in particular is a revelation as that has a lot of misty areas which my old one would struggle with. Nioh 2 also looks amazing in HDR as that's another game where details can get muddy and lost. - Windows 10's HDR handling is still a pain.
Not sure if it's an amazing work monitor due to the various things mentioned but for play I'm very happy so far.

That's basically a mini-video wall of four 27" monitors at that point.

I'm tempted by an ultrawide to go with my new laptop. I currently have two 24" 1080p monitors that I got free from work, they're fine but pretty old and no good for games. Plugging into the telly isn't ideal for anything that needs keyboard and mouse. This is me talking myself into it. Black Friday's coming up.
What are peoples' experiences of curved versus flat? Currently looking at a Xiaomi 34" 1440p model reduced from $690 to $550, which seems reasonable.

It looks like that Xiaomi one's a VA panel so if it wasn't curved you'd likely get some pretty bad colour shifting at the sides as your viewing angle becomes more oblique. It won't help with the black smearing you'll probably get - which is a non-issue if you're using it for work - but at least it should help keep colours correct if you're sitting reasonably close to it.
In general I have used a 34" ultrawide for years now, first IPS LCD and now OLED, and even without viewing angles to think about having some form of curve does help keep things looking 'straighter' simply because the wider screen takes up so much of your field of view. That might just be me strong glasses prescription though!
