Someone had to do it - and if I create just a couple more threads, I'll have already equalled my total threads created in 8 years at EG (5).
Anyway I actually do play and enjoy Fortnite, I'm particularly into the current season. The metaverse is bloody stupid (you can wield a gun, and be killed by bullets, as Superman in a new skin this past week FFS) but there's a reason it's played by so many, and at least some of that sweet Vbux money gets invested in "free" content (after the initial outlay for the battlepass)

The new season has a Carnage skin in the battle pass which is pretty cool. Also, cubes are back- which is some old Fortnite lore that I'm not familiar with. I might actually read up on it so I understand the references. Never thought I'd be getting into the lore of bloody Fortnite but here we are.

My kids are obsessed with it, so I'm mainly watching it being played, rather than playing it myself.
That said, given the disdain with which it is held by many 'proper gamers', it does seem pretty cool and rather slick.
The graphics are lovely, the gameplay seems pretty smooth (although the way they use building as a mid-combat defensive technique is disorienting at times), and the sheer amount of content that seems to be available is pretty mindblowing.
I'm not sure how many of the skins that pop up on the store are new vs recycled, but they seem to get 5 or so new ones each day... and they almost all look pretty cool. They must have a warehouse of artists working away on this stuff 24-7.
I'm also rather impressed that, unlike many other similar games I won't mention *cough LoL cough* they seem to have managed to make 100s of cool female characters without really any of them being dodgy skeezy skins.
The engine seems hyper flexible, and with the way they seem to be able to constantly mutate or expand the game and add in stuff that rides every trend, I can see why some people don't feel the need to play anything else... and also why Tim Sweeny is so into this 'metaverse' idea.

Yes it's extremely slick, unsurprisingly given the amount of money it's raking in.
It's a huge game - I only play the battle royale mode unless there's a challenge for Xp on another mode - but the Creative section is absolutely stuffed with player-created modes. And it's pretty flexible, there was controversy recently because Fortnite added an official "Imposters" game that's a blatant copy of Among Us, but players had been playing almost identical version of it in Creative that's been around ever since Among Us got big last year.
And on the building... I must be up to a few hundred hours played by now, and I'm still pretty basic at building. I can throw up a wall when I'm attacked or a ramp when I need to climb, but I'm nowhere near the skill you've probably seen where they assemble a whole tower and edit it on the fly to get an opponent. And yet, I still get the odd victory, building isn't essential.

I was looking forward to this before the release. It seems to have been around forever now but the previews seemed to have painted a very different picture of how the game was going to play.
Weridly, for being one of the biggest names around, I'm still not entirely sure what the gameplay actually consists of. From what I understand it's a frantic contest of building defences whilst shooting all that move. I think this'll be a case of watching bewildered as the kids play ( as I'm sure they probably will ).

I only recently realised it's basically been my pandemic game. I started playing it with the kids in February 2020- which was Chapter 2 Season 2. We're now on Chapter 2 Season 8 and I'm still playing it, and not just with the kids. In fact, the younger one went off it for a while and has only just got back into it because his mates play it and voice chat.
Also, I've spent a bit of money on it. Battle pass for me, plus the 2 kids, would have worked out about £25? Plus another £20ish in Vbux for the odd skin or emote. Feel like I've had a pretty decent return on that in terms of hours of entertainment.

There's a new horde mode for Halloween that's actually quite fun. Not the kind of thing that relies on tactics and squad cooperation (thankfully, because I've only played it with randoms), but there is a bit of novelty in being able to throw up walls when the horde gets too close.
And in crazy expanded metaverse news, they've got Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine skins and accessories in the shop today. If I could buy the classic Resident Evil typewriter on its own, I'd be tempted, but it's only in the multipack that costs a lot of Vbux

Both my kids have stopped playing Fortnite entirely this season, so I can't use them as my excuse any more, little brats. I'm still playing most nights, and just completed this season's battle pass yesterday. Whatever, I don't need an excuse, they were just holding me back anyway* *this is a lie, kid 1 still absolutely rules at it

I banned mine from it and now they are really enjoying several different story based games at last. Nothing against this game but it's far too much like crack for little ones where sp story games don't seem to have that same addictive nature.

Quitters!
I played most of this season. Though I need to merge mw switch and PSN accounts as my Switch suffers a little with rendering.
I do want to get back into Apex as it was fun but it's been so long I don't know if I can handle being a noob.

My eldest was addicted for quite some time, I never really played it but I was always impressed with the world building Epic had created.
I've now lost him to FIFA though. Idiot.

My eldest only plays when mates do at the beginning of each season, mostly into one of the Dragonball fighting games now. The youngest is getting into it more now to the point he asked for the battlepass because he'd made quite a bit of progress into it.
I try it every now and again but the building and builders piss me off.

I cannot overstate in this thread, again, how little building I do, and how it doesn't seem to matter against all but the top 5-10 players in any match.
Sure, it's annoying when you're down to the last 2 or 3 and come across someone who's built a fort around you and shotgunned you in the head through a window they just edited before you had a chance to move- but I figure I'm not beating someone that good with or without the building. And some of my absolute favourite victories have come from letting someone build upwards, and then methodically shooting out their foundations so they drop neatly in front of you.

This is our go-to family video game, me on PC, partner on ps5 and son on Switch or PS4, playing Trios and it works flawlessly. Addictive, familiar, easy gaming.
Yes, none of us can build for shit and you tend to know immediately when you're outclassed by another party, but we've had so many memorable/cool moments and lucky wins that we just love it.
Epic are testing a no building Duos mode plus there are rumours of auto building basic structure chapter 3 (eg. press 1 button to make a basic house or bridge)

Crikey dasbooter if you're playing trios you must be a pretty decent team! Me and my 2 kids tended to play squads with one random rather than trios because we kept getting stomped by extremely good opponents. The auto-build rumours sound interesting. I've also dabbled in no-build modes, there are dozens if not hundreds of solo or team deathmatch type modes in creative where building is disabled.

I'm not the best builder but can throw up a decent tower if needed, editing on a console is tricky though and I've never mastered it after 7 or more seasons.

Fully aware I'm speaking to an empty room here but... anyone doing the Chapter 2 finale live event? I'm not too bothered about the event itself, but I want to see what happens to the map. I only started playing in Chapter 2 season 2, so I wasn't around for the Chapter 2 opening- but by all accounts it was a big update.

I let the lad stay up to watch it with his pals and quietly watched in the background. Not a big fan of the game but you've got to say fair fucks for these events they put on. I even wanted to play it by the time it finished, pretty epic set piece.

Yeah that was pretty damn cool. Obviously quite a scripted set-piece sort of thing, but very very slick, and I was hyped* when I realised the whole island was flipping over.
Apparently the next battle pass has Spiderman too.

I let the kids wake up at 5:30 this morning, and they seemed to be able to connect and play it ok. They said it wasn't as good as they expected, but they're excited about Spiderman and apparently Spider Gwen in the next season.
I'm very sleepy as I failed to get back to sleep after they woke up. Grrr.
