First few episodes were t'riffic; the show manages to blend surreal, ridiculous dark humour, emotional moments and tension so well.

Yeah I smashed through all 3. The reason they don't drop it all in one go is to stop people using 30 day prime trials and binging it.

Yeah, that's the default option. They also do 99p or freebie months to tempt you back, which would be perfect for catching up on anything you've missed.
This ends on the 8th July for anybody thinking of signing up for a month.

Yeah but people are less likely to do it as they want to see it when it's new.

I'll subscribe a month or so before the final episode airs, then immediately cancel. Generally I like to do my streaming ad hoc like that.

And 8 hours later, I caved because there was other Prime stuff I wanted to watch.
Anyway...
It's still disgusting, still good. Anthony Starr is great, though whenever he has a scene with Karl Urban I keep imagining them in Xena Warrior Princess.
I don't really give a shit about the A-Train, Deep or Frenchie side stories. Hopefully they will become more interesting.

Anthony Starr has a great psychotic stare which makes Homelander seem menacing and unstable in every scene.

I'm sure they will tone it down, and that's a good thing. The smut and rape and all that is one of the worst things about the comic, and it's why the adaptation is mostly better. Wut.

The trick that the comic pulls again and again is "what if *insert famous superhero* but they were a RAPIST. Or a PEDOPHILE. Or a SEXUAL DEVIANT OF SOME KIND". It's tiresome, boring, and mean-spirited, like Watchmen but without any of the insight. Yeah yeah, Garth Ennis doesn't like superheroes, we get it. The TV version keeps a bit of that but (so far) tones it down, and to me that is a net positive. I much prefer Invincible as far as comics go. The adaptation of that is pretty good too.

I think that's why I like The Boys because I'm utterly tired of superheroes.

The comic is just very one-note. Watchmen was pretty down on superheroes, but it was more complex than just making all of them Nazi rapist pedophiles.
Ennis has these really weird hangups too. Which was also a thing in Preacher, but in The Boys had real "old man yelling at cloud" energy. I remember one character (Hughie I think) going on a rant about trans people at some point. And he has a very... uhh peculiar reaction to the revelation that his girlfriend got gang-raped by the Seven.

When I first read The Boys I loved it but I was well into superheroes at the time, same with Watchmen.
Getting a bit tired of them now with the constant Marvel and other capeshit shovelled at us recently.
The point is like it or not The Boys is fuckin good, and it was especially good because of how it presented a completely different view of super heroes and was utterly savage.
The TV series is also good don't get me wrong. In fact I know realistically they weren't going to put some things in the TV show. There's still some scenes and comic book wankery that I wish had been included though.

Taste is a matter of opinion and is subjective and all that, but The Boys is some of the best stuff I've ever read. Admittedly, I don't get the appeal of superheros generally (sorry nerds). Yes there are lots "imagine if well known character X was secretly a Y" ideas to it, but that's a very superficial take on what's going on. Ennis' strength is to create grotesque situations and characters and somehow still infuse it with depth and poignancy. If a formulaic approach is the issue then I refer you to {waves generally in the direction of every single superhero story in every medium ever}. I'm with snackplissken on this. This stuff is the perfect antidote and palate cleaners for superhero guff. And actually the ending (SPOILER ALERT) of the comics shows he really fucking idolizes the archetype of superheroes, really, anyway. "mean-spirited"? Boo fucking hoo

Meh, whatever. I think Invincible is a lot better as a comic. I hope Amazon gives the adaptation a second season!

The Boys was a lot leaner, though. Invincible dragged its arse a lot, especially when it kept doing shared universe crossovers. I would (and have) re-read The Boys. I don’t think I would bother reading invincible again.
