Tariffs: it's not just USA people that will experience higher prices. Our govts will retaliate, and we'll pay more too. But other governments can just retaliate with targeted tariffs. Not across the board like Trump is talking about. They can look at which tariffs will hit swing states and Trump's base most, causing maximum political damage to Trump, while limiting the negative affects domestically. He's come to power on a wave of dissatisfaction with inflation in the economy. Foreign governments should absolutely call his bluff. Loudly and publicly. My take is he's talking about this hard line, his opponents will warn against how dangerous this is, then he either won't implement at all, or in a very minor way. Then when the negative affects don't arrive, accuse his opponents of being hysterical and deranged. |

I mean at this point 1) it's likely as much a shield from retaliation and/or disproportionate retribution from the incoming admin as anything else. He's one of the most high-profile Democrat-adjacent people that was actually convicted of something, was already being hounded even under a Democratic presidency/balanced Congress, they're chomping at the bit to get him even if only to hurt his father... 2) Fuck 'em. With what Trump et al have been, are and will be doing, I'll allow Biden this. And if the MAGAts blow up about it a) they would have done (and have been doing ) so anyway and b) it'll just highlight the hypocrisy (for all the good that will do) of them bending over and spreading as they watch their guy supporting and surrounding himself with criminals orders of magnitudes worse. |
