Man, seems like it's just part of life over there, eh JD? They should probably all just get over it.

Hmm. Starting to worry about Republican supporters believing they have to fight fire with fire now. Fight fire with fire in that the shooter is a Republican. That's 2 for 2 in the public assassination attempts both coming from Republican voters.

Whoever wins, I feel like at this point there are decent odds that the next president is gonna have an assassination attempt.
Makes the result even more unpredictable though.

That's 2 for 2 in the public assassination attempts both coming from Republican voters. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/sep/15/trump-safe-gunshots-golf-courseGuardian article says that he was a registered Democrat, but had voted for both of them (including for Trump). So, kind of similar to the last one with not really being massively one way or the other. Only real motive indicated here is that he was strongly in favour of US intervention in Ukraine, having recently posted online about it. Honestly, I'm not conspiratorially inclined and certainly have no doubt that the first attempt was authentic, but I wouldn't particularly put it passed a flagging Trump campaign to recall how good a bump they got from the last time... Edit: A little more on the suspect from Guardian blog. Seems he became pretty obsessed (and delusional) about the war in Ukraine: Trump shooting attempt: Secret Service will have ‘every resource’ to protect Trump, Biden says, after apparent assassination bid – live www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2024/sep/15/donald-trump-shooting-florida-golf-course?CMP=share_btn_url&page=with%3Ablock-66e7d06a8f082dce7ae346ba#block-66e7d06a8f082dce7ae346ba

If he was trying to snipe with his yellow and blue haircut then it's no wonder the secret service spotted him in that bush.

Sounds like another deeply troubled person who had absolutely no problem getting hold of an automatic weapon.
America, you're doing this to yourself.

Assassination attempts are just the worst idea. You know the odds are stacked so highly in favour of the assassin dying instead of the target. And it’s counter productive to whatever point you’re trying to prove.
Not to mention even if you were to frag someone like Trump, there are so many proto-Trumps in the wings ready to replace him that it would make no difference. If anything it would just embolden his following and turn him into a martyr.

This is a reference to Vance saying that school shootings were a fact of life and we should get used to it. From behind a bulletproof screen.

Let's face it, it's quite likely that JD Vance probably has a bullet proof head, he's that dense.

I doubt the story has been made up, but I do think it says a lot about the post-truth era in which we're living - which Trump has been instrumental in creating - that even non-conspiratorial people can hear the news and think, "Hmm."

The idea that this was made up to get votes after seeing the boost from the last one kinda falls apart when you remember that... he didn't get a boost from the last one No seriously, the triple whammy of the RNC, the VP pick and a much more highly publicized shooting... barely even moved the needle, and any gains have been negated by now. Assuming this was indeed staged (I do think there's a higher chance for this compared to the first one, the would-be shooter apparently didn't even fire this time, but it also easily could be real), it's much more likely to have happened as a distraction. Trump bombs the debate, he and the other weirdo make (dangerous) fools of themselves with the pets story and doubling down on it, T. Swift endorses Harris and Trump makes an even bigger fool of himself ("I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!!!")... and now this happens? Coincidence??

I think if trump were gone, the GOP would breathe a sigh of relief and find someone more moderate. He's been holding the party hostage all these years, because he's so popular with the base.

I don't know about that, there's plenty of crazies within the party too... Empty G, Kirsti "Puppy Killer" Noem, Graham, Cruz, multiple state governors, lieutenant governors and other powerful positions like Paxton (Texas) and Robinson (North Carolina)...
As important as it is to boot Trump the fuck out, this doesn't go away when he does.

I think his specific brand of populism will fall apart without him. There are plenty of crazy people in American politics, but none of them have quite his combination of cultish TV star charisma, plus utter and complete lack of shame.

I’d imagine a lot of these Secret Service agents never thought they’d be spending large amounts of their careers heroically wandering up and down golf courses to check for people hiding in bushes.

Definitely think it would be a hydra situation. Cut the head off one snake and two more would grow in his place. When the GOP nominations were standing was anyone confident that there were sound minds willing to step up if Trump stepped aside? Hell, it’s the sort of thing that would make Tucker Carlson give it a go.
Everyone seems to be afraid that one day we’ll get a Trump with brains. I’m more worried about a Trump with more years left on the clock. He might be able to beat every court in the country but he can’t beat Father Time.

Wasn't DeSantis supposed to be a Trump with brains...look how that turned out. I don't know, Trump really does have a "specific set of skills" that really appeal to a fair bit of people. Everyone else is just cosplaying and it's noticeable.

He looked fucking weird and desperate all throughout his campaign and went off with his tail between his legs. He's not going anywhere but his attempts to be painted as a strong leader are fucking dead.

There are plenty of crazy people in American politics, but none of them have quite his combination of cultish TV star charisma, plus utter and complete lack of shame. The problem is that people like him and Boris show others that if they just lie without shame and never admit fault then they can win.. for a time at least. the Tories had a whole bunch of wannabe Borises who tried using his playbook. It didn't go that well for them in the end, but they caused a fair bit of damage in the meantime, and are still running the conservative party.
So I guess the Republican party will follow a similar path...

If Trump wins, it will be from JD's backers, leading to Vance in power, martial law and a crackdown leading to a full Handmaid's Tale style takeover.

Zuchowski, good old traditional US name. He’s probably descended from Jebediah Zuchowski, one of the founding fathers.

He might be better off just playing in the golf simulator. No chance of that. It would accurately record the score.
