*IF* there is another season or 2 coming out, I really hope they don't bring another cartoon baddie into the show. I haven't read the last 3 books, but hopefully they come across more as existential alien threat rather than what we had in the last couple of series. You'll get both of those things if they follow the last 3 books. But with a big element of protomolecule & alien forerunner shenanigans you'll be pleased to hear. As said already, I agree that some feature-length eposides might be the way to go as the studio is going to need deep pockets to do it right. Big space battles, bigger scale that anything before this. The way the books handle the 30 year gap, with the Roci crew still there as 60-something protagonists, it's explained away by increased human longevity due to the medical tech and references to them creaking a bit after so many years on the float. Holden's still on his anti-cancer drugs. So I guess no reason why the cast couldn't plausibly do it next year with some greying hair and a little make-up.

Five episodes into season 5 1. Marco is such a shite character
2. Amos suplexing that Batman villain down a lift shaft seems like a bit of a shift in tone from the earlier seasons

Amos deserves his own show TBH, such a great antihero.

Maybe its a book thing but it does feel like he’s been a little underserved by the tv show. I like him a lot but up until it was implied he might’ve tried the Eros scientist magnetic brain-wipe thing he was just sort of there. Nice to find out more about him this season with his strand even if the main arc isn’t that interesting

I haven't read the books, but have watched the series twice (and will again). I saw far more of Amos character second time through, I think because a lot of his important moments are when there is a lot going on, so on the first watch he was more just the heavy, until Earth at least.
On a second run, his character is a lot more noticeable. Even if he only gets one line in an episode, it is usually the best one. And because his motivations are clearer, all the Earth bits are more interesting and powerful too.
Great character, great telly.

Without any spoilers for whats coming in season 6 can any book wankers tell me what happened to season 5? Do the books hit the reset button as hard as this season did?
It felt like its focus and tone were so different to the expanding horizons of the previous seasons. I’m guessing the book has the Marcos thread, the crew’s individual ones and a cosmic ring/gate/protomolecule one and they dropped the latter?
Marco was such a cartoon villain. It didn’t feel very credible that he’d take over so quickly and thoroughly. His big attack too big to feel in step with the world they’d established either.

The fifth book has mostly the same structure as the season, pretty faithful. So as you said, individual crew members... The Marcos/Naomi thread is obviously a bit more fleshed out and makes it a bit more clear that rather than Marcos taking over everywhere it's a part of the Martian Navy having plans of their own and using Marcos to their ends... Holden starts to notice some ships are disappearing through the rings along with that reporter Monica... Amos hooks up with Clarissa on Earth as everything goes to hell... Alex and Bobbie's segment is a bit different though, there's a whole subplot of the Free Navy trying to take out the Martian Prima Minister, and as someone mentioned on the previous page Alex doesn't stroke out in his ship just because IRL the actor...stroked out, so to speak... So it's a different structure to be sure to the previous instalments...

I've not read the books but I got the impression that the final couple of seasons had to truncate some things to make it fit into the limited time left.
So that made Marco a bit simpler, some relationships a bit more convenient.
That said though I still think it was fairly successful. I'd still rate it an 8/10.

Thanks, kind of surprised to hear how faithful it is - installing Marcos as a proper baddie felt like a very televisual choice.
Didn’t know about Alex being accused of being a wrong un either. Real shame to hear it but it does explain why they killed one of the core cast off screen with basically no foreshadowing.
It would’ve been nice to see more if the Belter politics behind Marcos but I’m guessing Dawes not appearing was because Jared Harris wasn’t available. Not that there’s anything wrong with using more Drummer to tell that story. If this was the straight to video/dvd tv movie era she’d probably get her own spin-off. I read she’s a bit of a composite character in the show but either way she’s been tremendous.
I think its probably an 8 in the grand scheme of tv but compared to the best of the previous series the simplifications made it a 7 for me. Started season 6 this morning and it feels stronger and more rounded already.

I think the abrupt change in setting does contribute to season 5 not seeming as good. I was after Martian battlegroups and missile carousels and railgun combat and Bobby Draper in power armour (or indeed anything atall), and instead we get a not entirely convincing Earth slum. But the story told there is great, at least to one who hasn't read the books, because it is Amos story, which is one of the highlights of the whole thing in the end. Took a second run to notice that for me.
Marcos is rubbish. I love the artist formerly alive and known as Prince. You wouldn't have that hair in space. Or anywhere except on Prince.

I think I enjoyed every story apart from Naomi’s and Marcos supervillainy which is a shame because it felt like that was nearly half the screen time with the other characters dividing the rest between them.
Which isn’t to say its a bad show in general, if a new original show had been this I’d probably rate it pretty highly but when its coming off the back of four of the best seasons of sci-fi since the Galactica mini-series it felt like they fumbled the ball.

They introduce Marcos so late as well. If he was going to be the big baddie, he needed to be ominously referred to early on, like The Shadows in The Very Best Thing Ever 5. I get that Naomi sort of did that, but even that link was revealed quite late. He just never seem to hit any sort of proper baddie stride, even when pummelling Earth with asteroids, which is quite the achievement when you think about it.

I think season 6 addressed every concern I had about season 5 and delivered.
Very interested to know what the deal is with the alien lifeforms (dogs and ring dwellers) and whatever that superweapon the rogue Martians have is. I’m guess the books are split roughly into three big arcs (pre-ring, fighting for control of the ring, threats from beyond the ring)
I know I don’t have the time to read them but it is tempting to go straight out and pick up the lot tomorrow

Is there any hope for another TV rights rescue job on this? I really want to know more about many plot points and it was frustrating how rushed the last series felt.
Don't really want to read the books to then find we get more seasons.

Doesn’t feel very likely. The streaming space seems to be imploding at the moment, not seeking desperately for content that’s a bit long in the tooth and therefore expensive.

I know we’ve done this conversation to death but I’m fully in the pocket of turning subs on and off for single shows now. The only continual subscription I keep is D+ but that’s mostly for my son.
I’m neither time nor cash rich enough to maintain Netflix, Prime, Now TV, Apple TV and all the rest. Which is probably the sort of behaviour that sabotages the chances of something like Expanse being picked back up as all these services want you locked in for good.

The only outside chance of something expensive and lasting series really being made is if Bezos or similair decides to make it a pet project like Rings of Power.

It was easier to be locked in to a service when there was only one service.
