I've always considered the NES, SNES N64 and GameCube as one run of consoles, in regards to design philosophy. For sure, the controller on the N64 wasn't standard, but the standard was still being set at the time. The GameCube controller is the controller the N64 should have had.

I had one of these:
I like to think of the GBA connected Tingle Tuner in The Wind Waker as being the precursor to the Sheikah Slate in the sense that it essentially gave Link a PDA that he could do various shit with, but alas with none of the fun.

Finally started Breath of the Wild! One hour in and it is meeting my sky-high expectations so far. It's interesting to come at it so late having already played other games that it influenced, most obviously Elden Ring. Though I can see some of this game's influences too, the world and art style are giving me massive Fumito Ueda vibes. Looks like this is gonna live up to the hype after all. And I have a week off work! \o/

Though I can see some of this game's influences too, the world and art style are giving me massive Fumito Ueda vibes. Looks like this is gonna live up to the hype after all. And I have a week off work! \o/ Aye, it is brilliant. Been playing it recently myself. I hadn't really played it properly since the Wii U version came out and even then I played for about dozen hours and did one divine beast. I liked it at the time, but drifted away for some reason. Now playing it again on my Switch and I'm loving it a lot. Even things like the weapon degradation are bothering me much less then I remember. The world is constantly offering up new things to poke around in, with every minor landmark normally offering a Korak Seed, tucked away shrine or some kind of item. Quests and minor objectives emerge really organically too, with very little being forced on you. If you want to just go off and do your own thing for hours on end, there isn't any nagging prompts or map markers to constantly tell you what you should be doing. When you are looking to do some of the main objectives, you are gently guided towards completion rather than pushed through it. It perhaps could do with larger dungeons, but I do enjoy the mini challenges offered by the shrines. They are fun little puzzles that are normally satisfying, albeit often a tad on the easy side. I've just managed to claim the Master Sword. Have another 2 divine beasts to deal with, with one that I'm basically right next to. Still have a couple of towers to climb, but think both are in an extreme heat area that I don't have the necessary gear to pass through. Not sure where to get the gear to do that either.

Vandelay I'll give you a pointer but tagged in case you don't want to see it: If "extreme heat" means "I burst into flames", a nearby stable should have an NPC that sells you protective elixirs, to carry you until you reach a town where you can buy fireproof armour. If it means desert, you can eventually get heat-resistant gear as part of the story, but otherwise you'll have to rely on heat resistance food to get around, or a combination of the two in the wilder parts of the desert. Alternatively, you could do your business there at night...

Ah, it was the first one. Thanks. I likely wouldn't have thought to check the stables, so could have been wondering around for a while.
Been through the desert and picked up the heat resistant gear from the secret club. Expected that to be enough to avoid bursting into flames, but nope.

Yeah, flame resistance and heat resistance being different stats was an interesting choice Very justifiable though, to be fair. Your typical firefighter gear would probably cook you alive in a desert, and likewise the airy, lightweight clothes you'd wear to handle desert heat would burn up in an instant near lava...

I'm playing BotW again at the moment also and although I've completed it previously (launch week) I'm impressed all over again at how good it is, and especially how the different systems work beneath the surface. I can't think of another game, and certainly haven't played one, that has all the different physics and chemistry at it's core, but is still so simple to understand and play.

It really is quite impressive how you basically have all the tools available to you within the first hour or two, from then on it's all up to the player... And yet they've created such robust, intricate and interactive systems that I can legitimately wander to Reddit or YouTube or whatever even now, see a random post and go "you can do that?" or "That exists? How did I miss that?" so long after its release...
Very few games can claim that, and most that do usually have new discoveries every few weeks or months or so, with BotW it was usually a matter of days before the next new little interaction or physics trick!

Yeah, it's definitely one of the best games of all time for me. I've got a save going at the moment - all divine beasts down, shit load of shrines and I could fairly easily wrap up this run but there's still a few bits and pieces I want to do. Though it doesn't actually matter if I finish it - it's possibly the only game where I could finish it, watch credits, and then start a new game immediately and it just feels like a constant continuation of the game. I even relish starting again and making a crazy run all the way to Impa and the upgrades for the abilities immediately after getting the parachute. Ever done that? Just start a new game, and just leg it all the way? You've got a rusty sword and 3 hearts and no upgraded skills at this stage, but it's still ace fun taking it on

My latest run I made a beeline for the Master Sword, not even going to Impa let alone anyone else Just do enough shrines for hearts to pull it, then go see who recognizes it. Also, fun fact: did you know that if you're inside the Gerudo Secret Club and switch outfits, you won't get thrown out of the town by the guards? Or that you can wear the Thunder Helm, Snow Boots or Sand Boots instead of the respective Gerudo set pieces and you'll be allowed in the town? Too bad there's no unique interaction if you change clothes right in front of the guards then try to go in...

That's a lot of shrines straight away to get the sword. It's the abilities that I want upgrading immediately that makes me go oop north straight away. I simply *must* have the upgraded bombs straight away. I often take a breather from doing main stuff and find a hill and just have fun rolling bombs everywhere into enemies Re the Geruda trick - hah, nice one. That's another thing to love - there's so many things to find. Still finding stuff now, years on.

Well, fair warning about the Gerudo Club thing, you'll get thrown out the moment you actually step out of the Club... It's just that the owner doesn't rat you out while you're in there, which makes sense considering she's already selling armour for guys so she doesn't want to draw attention to her shop There's little things like that everywhere in the game actually. I remember an NPC patrolling a bridge somewhere that, if you step on the side railings, will shout after you to stop you because he thinks you want to commit suicide by jumping off... You get the impression it's happened before with some despairing people and it's a very strong bit of world building. Not to mention there's a chance it's based on a real person! The NPC is named Brigo and there's a California sergeant named Kevin Briggs that apparently dissuaded more than 200 people from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge during his career: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Briggs

Picked up Doom II and Quake. Not had much more than a dabble with either, but they seem pretty slick. Aiming with the switch mini-sticks is a bit of a pain though, as I'm not used to it from any other games either.
I knew quake included the expansion packs, but I didn't know both included online access to a limited number of fan levels. That's kinda cool.

Would fucking love that. I never played the first one as a kid but I have a lot of nostalgia for the sequel. On another note, why the fuck hasn't Symphony of the Night been ported to Switch? Seems very odd given most of the others are available.

I assume its some kind of Sony licencing issue? A bit like this Nintendo/Goldeneye thing. A shame though, as it would be perfectly suited.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters released on 19th. First two are just shy of 10 quid each and rest are 15, bundle for 65 quid (I think, might be a bit more)
I'm looking forward to those.

Playing Doom 2 on switch has made me want Daggerfall Oh, and Unreal Tournament. Quake looks great, but I'm not sure about the auto-aim. I'm finding it plays very differently on a gamepad than it did on a mouse and keyboard. Given the super-fast movement speed, it's hard to aim accurately while moving, which was always a key part of Quake. Auto-aim helps with that of course, but also feels kinda like cheating.

I tried quake on the ps. It is very slick and fast like the original, but I just can't play it how I want to. I put years into quake on the pc and I can't shake the kb/m. I can for most games, but not quake. Or Doom(s) either for that matter. There's something about those two.

I don't remember using the mouse for Doom back in the day, was all just the direction buttons on the keyboard.

Aye, Doom never clicked with mouse movement for me. Quake was the first shooter that converted me to M+K. I think I even played stuff like Duke 3D and Descent on keyboard only, which seems very wrong in hindsight.

Yeah, Doom feels ok on the gamepad to me. Quake doesn't feel 'bad' on the gamepad, just very different and I find myself playing it very differently. I'm doing a lot of side-to-side strafing and shooting when the enemy is under my crosshair, whereas with M+Kb I'd be circle-strafing and the enemy would always be under my crosshair.
Maybe it's partly because I'm out of practice with playing FPS on a controller, but usually console FPS have much slower movement speed to compensate.
PS/ I just realised that Quake seems to support crossplay with PC?! Nice.
Can't find any info on Doom II.

Not sure about Descent (I'm not sure if I ever played them, maybe a demo of one of them,) but wasn't the default control scheme for Duke 3D keyboard only? Think I probably played it originally with just keyboard, same with Dark Forces, Doom and the like. Arrow keys for movement (left and right arrows would turn), Pg up and down for looking up and down, ctrl for shooting, comma and period for strafing. Recently played Heretic with that kind of scheme and it still worked well, once I got used to it.

I definitely played Duke3D with a mouse, and I feel like by Doom 2 it was an option as well. Memory is tricky though. It wasn't usually proper mouselook as it was locked to purely the horizontal.
First proper mouselook FPS I played was Terminator Future Shock (which I love, but ironically got criticised in a lot of reviews because 'the controls were too complex'), followed by Quake the next year.
Descent I played with a joystick, but I think it had mouselook too.

I downloaded Doom 3 for my Easter holiday gaming fix and, for £3, it's ace. Never had the pc hardware to run in when it was new and I think it holds up really well in portable mode- even got used to aiming OK. The atmosphere is great, it's linear to a fault so zero getting lost, and the audio is brilliant with headphones on. I'd unfairly tagged it as 'the shit Doom' and so far I reckon it's better than Eternal.

Might just be the way I played and everyone else had already moved over to mouse. I don't think I bothered using the mouse until full mouse look as we know it today. Probably Quake was the first I played like that.
