Seeing as I'll be waiting until fuck-knows-when to get The Witcher 3 on PS5, which alternative fantasy RPG would I be better off playing in the meantime - Dragon Age: Inquisition, or Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning?

Dragon Age. Even if Inquisition isn’t the best, anything is better than Amalur.
If you don’t care so much about story and just want good combat mechanics, get Dragon’s Dogma.

I quite enjoyed amalur. It was fun enough, but not sure how it will have aged since it was 360era.
Action RPG i guess, story was bobbins.
Inquisition had lots of ubi-esque filler, but was middling at best.
Some decent quests in amongst it. It's probably the better option.

I think a lot of people were underwhelmed by the Amalur remaster, and regarded it as being a 'bare minimum' type of thing.

Anybody play the console versions of the Divinity Original Sin games? I’m not a big fan of mouse and keyboard controls, but that said these are originally PC titles (unlike Divinity 2 which was made with the 360 in mind). The Source Saga bundle which includes both Original Sins is currently on sale on Xbox under the Deals With Gold category. II by itself is also on sale on PSN, although if you can get both for a little more, might as well. I played the first one on ps4 and had no issues with the controller. I hated sorting through the oodles of loot but that was likely a me thing rather than a controller thing. The ‘click an area to walk to’ thing was a little odd at the start but not a biggie. |

Anybody got/getting/played Victoria 3, Paradox's latest? I've been tempted, but it sounds like different countries play very similarly at the moment. Also, as per Paradox's usual MO, it's a little bit buggy (not sure about latest patch) and some systems (the new warfare system in particular) are a bit underdeveloped. You're not controlling stacks in war, for example, you just send generals to a certain front and don't have a lot of agency after that.
HOWEVER, people who have jumped in have had a pretty good time with it, so if you're not going to play several games immediately after each other, it's still a good shout. Prepare to wrestle a little with getting the info you need though.

Tbh the fact that warfare is not "moving units round a map" affair is something that actually appeals to me. I got the feeling from one review I read it was a lot more focused on managing social factions with political decisions and the like.
I'm probably getting it at some point. I think I'm trying to get a feel about just how bad the usual post-release pre-patch glitches and bugs are.

To be fair to them, it sounds like it's the most bug-free of any Paradox launch. I think it was pretty clean at launch, and then some quick fixes introduced some bugs and so on. The most amusing bugs are pretty innocuous - 'Fixed Jack the Ripper event so that the Ripper can no longer be a toddler' and so on.
I'd agree on the warfare changes, they sound good to me. But I think people were frustrated with less agency, and apparently sometimes a stalemate can occur with limited ways to resolve it.
Overall, what I have read about the game is very positive. It's definitely all about managing your pop groups like industrialists and landowners; changing laws etc.

So, it would appear that I have enough wallet credit to buy something on the Xbox store, and that something could possibly be Asura's Wrath. Worth five bucks?
And what about the DLC, I hear it's more or less necessary to finish the story? As I only have enough credit for one piece of DLC, which one should it be? (yeah, sure I could just add my own money, but I don't feel like it)

It's definitely a very shitty practice, was criticised at the time too but it's also an essential part of the game so you're kind of forced into it.
It's great fun though, just don't expect all that much in the way of gameplay. I'm surprised we haven't seen more games take a few cues from it since its release honestly

Or should I just buy it and start entirely unspoiled? I mean, it's cheap enough that I don't really need to see if I like it first. And it's not like I haven't bought worse. Often intentionally so. I'm not sure why Sonic 2006 and AMY are in my collection... oh right, because I had wallet credit to burn. Sigh |

The demo put me off buying it, to be honest. I did get around to it, during a sale, but a bunch of QTEs and bad shooting mechanics feel like a shit game without context.

Yeah, that demo was... something. Not sure they knew what they wanted to sell. The QTEs were generally terrible (no way this game would be made today, not with all the B-button mashing) and the Panzer Dragoon mechanic was bad. I did enjoy the obvious Dragon Ball influences though. Looks like with proper context this could be a decent anime, sorry, game.
I'll make up my mind later.

That’s what it is. A playable shonen anime. The gameplay itself isn’t the focus, or even good. It’s the spectacle and presentation.

If you’re a Frostpunk fan, Ixion is really good so far and scratches that same itch with added spacey stuff. And also a really really good soundtrack.

Hellboy of War: Not Ragnarök looks pretty ace. Mignola art style is so suited for cell shading it’s amazing it’s never been done before.
