Haha, oh dear. You've got a lot more game to play! Is that in response to my spoiler?
I only did the first playthrough myself and some of the second, then watched someone else finish that to see what was up. How many playthroughs to get the full story?

Sorry, in response to Ook. You don't like Nier Automata, so you're officially dead to me.
There are three playthroughs until you unlock chapter select, then you can go back and mop up any extra endings.

I ended up looking up the big reveal after all the fuss people make about it and it's not that interesting. if you got rid of the second playthrough, the third is just a continuation making the first playthrough an overly long prologue. Not really seeing the storytelling genius This may be the worst hot take Font Geek has produced so far.

Genuinely didn't get on with Nier: Automata either. I gave it a good british try - a couple of times in fact - but it's very much not for me I think. Too... I don't know. Weird. Not good weird. Weird weird.

I'm the same; played Route A and got halfway through Route B and then just binned it off.
Story/world are intriguing but the combat is far too simple, especially for a Platinum game.
Some great moments buried under a lot of repetition.

Moonscars - decent metroidvania. The story is pretty much incomprehensible but the mood and style make up for it. The combat is fun, even if it does limit it with stingy mana costs for spells.

The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition - 6/10
I know this is sacrilege, and I do love the game, it was a seminal gaming experience back in the day. Everything on Melee Island is brilliant, but as soon as you get to Monkey Island the game becomes hugely frustrating: the puzzles are the worst kind of point and click nonsense, and the endless backtracking around the map gets old extremely fast. But it is was it is, I had a great time flicking back to the original art style and listening to the music, which is more than enough reason to revisit it. Sorry, this is a bit late, but I've just read this and noticed your 9 in that 9/10 swung upside down.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive EditionIt was really good, I'm just not convinced that it justified 80 hours of my life. Very grindy and with way too many under-written fetch quests. Feels like the main story could have been told effectively in about 20 hours. Still, the music and the massive, beautiful world were a joy to experience. And I ended up really liking the main cast of characters. Onto the DLC, and the sequels. Coming in late on this, I'm very surprised you found it grindy. If you complete sidequests and raise area affinity enough to get to the actual meaty ones and not just the "kill six bugs" ones (about 1-2 affinity stars depending on area, and it's really not hard to reach that point) it's incredibly easy to be overlevelled before you know it. And even if you don't bother with quests, the areas that open up lategame give you buckets of experience for just discovering them to prop you up... I did think it was grindy back in my first playthrough of the original. Then at some point early on I restarted and took the time to do sidequests (accept the early ones before I explored and complete them as I went, then the good stuff would open up) and explore. Before I knew it I had to stop because I was outlevelling bosses to the point they had black tags I suppose it's grindy in the sense that you do have to go back to places repeatedly as you progress and complete sidequests to see what new things open up with more affinity, and if that's what you meant then apologies. But I honestly never felt like I needed to stop and beat up monsters just for levels... Nevertheless I'm still glad you otherwise liked it

Return to Monkey Island
In the end, was this MI3 better than the MI3 we got twenty-five years ago? That's up to you to decide. I'm sure opinions will be split on this. As for me... I'd say Return is perhaps better as game (Curse was still too entrenched in the moon logic puzzles of its era, but Return does suffer a bit from some repetitive puzzle design and a weak first half), but I thought the dialogue and characters weren't quite as fun. The final section and ending wasn't great either way, though for differing reasons.
I'm not sure. Frankly, I'd give it to Curse, because Return only really has an advantage due to its more modern design. But that's also its weakness, as its mythical status only grew with time, and of course it was too hard for it to live up to the hype. Gilbert himself must have changed a lot since leaving Lucasfilm. If he had made a sequel himself in 1997, I wonder how it would have turned up?
7/10
Anyway, I guess it doesn't matter, because Lair of the Clockwork God basically wipes the floor with it. RMI was fun, but people really should play that, to see what an adventure should be like.

Shady Part of Me
Really loved this. Went into this expecting a Little Nightmares knockoff, which is no bad thing for me since I'm a big fan of Little Nightmares, but it's actually not the case at all.
It's a puzzle platformer, with a 2.5D perspective but the twist is that on the wall/shadows behind you, you control another character which plays the level as a 2D platformer. You control one at a time, switching between them at any point with a press of a button. The levels are played out in tandem, stuff you do on the 2D platformer side affects the environment and helps the character on the 2.5D side to progress, and vice versa. Since the 2D side takes place in the shadows of the level cast by the 2.5D environments, everything's on the same screen so it's all very seamless and doesn't feel disjointed. Both sides also play pretty differently so you don't get the feel you're just running through the same environment with each character.
I don't know if I've really explained this well, putting an image or trailer would probably make it much clearer but I'm too lazy to do that. The puzzles themselves were really enjoyable throughout. They evolve as opposed to just having you do the same thing over and over and the general dynamic of controlling 2 characters means they stay fun. Game doesn't run too long either.
It describes itself as taking you on an emotional journey, which for most indies these days is an instant eye roll, but I actually liked the story. It's not too heavy handed, doesn't interrupt gameplay and was interesting enough. Good art style, nice OST, didn't like the English voice acting personally though so I switched it and put subs on. Went with French but there are others to choose from.
Lovely stuff, it's currently around £4 in a PSN sale

Knights in the Nightmare (Switch)
Started this seven months ago, then paused in the middle due to work, and then picked it up again and finished it this month. Seven months for 35 hours... not bad.
It works quite well as a Switch port, except for some slowdowns, thanks to the touch screen. Certainly much better than the PSP version. Still prefer the DS version though, it's even easier to control and the DS doesn't weigh as much. Plus, you know, it's translated. Which this version was not, and probably won't ever be.
Game is the same as always, aside from some improvements to make it a bit more accessible. It's great fun, but can get repetitive in the long run, and item management (in all senses) is a bit of a mess. Best thing is to run a couple battles per day, no more. But it's one of those games that just work in spite of their issues. And well, there isn't anything like it even now, nor do I have any hope that Sting will ever attempt anything like it again. It's already a miracle that they haven't folded years ago. Talk about longevity. I don't think there are many small and unknown Japanese studios that lasted as long as they are doing.
8/10
I gave the Android version a look too. It's basically the same, only you don't have any buttons, so that's pretty annoying (the entire Switch version can be controlled with the touch screen too, but you'll really want to at least use the L button).

Deathloop (PC)
It took me 33 hours, which probably should have been a bit shorter due to a combination of the menu objectives getting a bit bugged, a puzzle I couldn't do because I'm colourblind, and Julianna constantly invading on the one level that results in meltdown (she actually killed me twice while I was taking a screenshot of the colourblind puzzle and posting it to imgur lol).
Despite all that, the game grew on me immensely as I got further into it. There were a phenomenal amount of threads for the devs to pull together into a coherent whole, but they managed it. I even have some sympathy for the terrible menu system and information overload - like how do you guide a player when they can choose from any of 16 (4 locations by 4 times of day) scenarios? So I admire the craft that pulled it all together, AND I had a pretty good time stealthing around for a bit before going nuts with a shotgun.
The Dishonoreds probably deserve more acclaim, but for me personally this is better than both as I'm not really a fan of 'pure' stealth games.
Got it in a Humble Bundle, so it was 1.80 well spent

I'm finished with The Citadel (10 hours), a fairly recent FPS with Anime aesthetics from a pretty small developer. It was apparently made with Unreal Engine, which is odd when you consider how primitive the game looks most of the time. However, the gore and various decals are very detailed and there is an option to let them stay on the map for up to three minutes. It was nice to see spent ammo staying around the battlefield for a while.
It's perhaps a bit bloated when it comes to gameplay systems and the firemodes of the guns. Everything has a secondary firemode, which works well, when it's just for switching to the other mode, but when I'm forced to use the middle mouse button for the secondary firemode, that's pretty inconvenient. Ironsights are relatively useful, but having them block the secondary firemode on a lot of guns isn't the greatest design. Aside from the fact that there are simply too many options overall.
Considering that there is no quicksave it wasn't particularly hard. Checkpoints are usually placed quite well, so my deaths were usually not really punished. Otherwise there are so-called pattern buffers which respawn the player in exchange for a life. However, they almost never came into play for me. The only thing with which I had trouble was a map with instantly lethal lava and a lot of jumping. It eventually turned out that there was an alternative path, so I finally got through there. Easily the most difficult and frustrating part of the game.
Edit: Oh, and the soundtrack is fairly atmospheric. Environments are pretty samey though. Enemy design is fine. Relatively varied aesthetically and somewhat different attack patterns.
Edit2: Forgot about it yesterday, but that's actually pretty important. There is no hitscanning going on. All projectiles have travel time, though some are faster than others and there is also drop-off. The movement mechanics (double jumps, sprinting, grabbing onto ledges, far jump) also help with giving the player a feeling of control.

Attentat 1942 (PC) which is a game where you investigate the cause of your grandfather's arrest by the Gestapo in Bohemia during WW2. It's presented as a series of interviews with actors (WW2 survivors, 50 years later) answering your questions: interspersed with animations and mini games as you uncover more information: As usual with WW2 stuff, it is hard hitting, but with a lot of compassion on display. The actors do a good job, and you can't just barge in asking direct questions - you have to be pretty circumspect and soften them up first. Less than three hours long, and is on sale for a couple of bucks for the next 24 hours on Steam. Well worth it, enjoyed it a lot.
Hmm, I was so engrossed I forgot about the black borders on those screenshots. Dunno if that's a screen size setting or just the way its presented.

Vampire Survivors SX/PC - 9/10 Well, finished for now at least, as I've mopped up every achievement and the game is consistently crashing on Xbox whenever I try to do a run with Sigma. Probably time to walk away until they've patched it and there are inevitably some new achievements to grab. Tried a 1 weapon max curse run for the lols and was still absolutely wrecking everything before it crashed. It's just such a fantastic little game. Played it on Steam earlier in the year, but still loved steamrolling my way through it again over the past week or so. Had some pretty serious progress breaking bugs on SX aside from the above mentioned crashes mind you (arcanas not working, boss not dropping great gospel), so spent a lot of time playing on PC instead, which is thankfully cross-save. Hopefully it receives an urgent bit of TLC, because it's really not up to par with either PC version which have both been bug free for me. Captured this just before the last crash. Utter chaos! www.xbox.com/play/media/6VFME3P2LG

Persona 5 Royal
I'm not sure P5 is a game that needed more content but even at 140 hours I loved every minute of it. I don't think there's enough extra to justify charging full price for owners of the original game but at sale price it's worth it for the best version of the game. The only slight let-down is the translation, which is really poor in places.
9/10

All done. Just over 19 hours. Very disappointing. So so safe. Pretty much no new gameplay elements. A good story but kinda of drums the same point for most of it. Thor and especially Odin were amazing and made up for most of the negatives. Acting was great. It drags on way too long and there are too many sections spent just walking around and the puzzles are all shit.
Maybe 7 out of 10.

A console migration, BL1, 2 and 3 playthroughs and a character reset later and I've finally finished Tiny Tina's Wonderlands Had a really great time with it and it introduced me to Borderlands. Like BL, it gives me everything I want (stuff to shoot, loot, a laugh, fun characters) and doesn't put anything in the way of that. Feels just as good to play as BL3 The story is all (literally) made up nonsense but is full of memorable moments. TT's voice actress really puts in the work; a great performance and really fun character. Especially like the bits where the environments and quests change as Tina makes stuff up on the fly. I really hope at least Frette makes it into BL4. She's cool It's incredibly pretty. Very vibrant and colourful. Just an all round fun, warm and good natured game. Bones and LeChance has to be the greatest undead pirate love story ever told. I don't even care about The Witcher and the Gerrit of Trivia bit was still brilliant The Chaos chamber stuff that unlocks at the end seemed quite interesting during my quick run through. Some rogue-like elements but rather than starting from scratch, you use your own character and equipment. Will look at it again after a little break dfunked Was any of the DLC worth a look in the end?

I never came back to it after the second bit of DLC. That was enough to make me never want to buy another bit of Gearbox's DLC again (shame, as I loved DLC for previous games). Really not worth it and it sounds like more of the same for the other drops.
No idea if they've released some decent DLC after that that's not included in the first season pass.
