Ameritrash 80s fans could do a lot worse than look at the new GI Joe game. They’ve taken the excellent guardian system from Power Rangers Heroes of the Grid (legit one of my favorite games despite the IP) and baked in a bunch of improvements that can roll back to Power Rangers. Also still a rock hard game, I didn’t even get to the last boss on my first test play.

Oh, might keep an eye out for that!
Heard a lot of good things about that Power Rangers one, but have absolutely no affinity with the IP at all. Action Force (let’s use the correct terminology here) though…now that’s a whole different ball game.

Frostpunk delivered today too. It’s got some of the worst storage I’ve seen in a modern game, a million different tokens and tiles to punch out, and not even a baggie included. Also some resource tokens have wooden equivalents in one of the expansions, but not all of them, and some tiles aren’t needed if you have the playmat, and the meeples are partially replaced by the miniatures add-on…it’s just a mess and probably the biggest first play organization challenge since Legendary Marvel. Ugh.

It’s ace. The ship binder thing is so well thought out, and despite the sheer size of the damn thing (both in scope and sheer physical volume) it’s so easy to setup and save. Speaking of easy to setup, here’s Frostpunk’s tutorial setup: That’s a 6x3 table.

So Frostpunk is superb. Much like This War of Mine, it actually works slightly better as a board game than a video game. It’s basically a worker placement game with a very tight economy, reminds me a lot of a Uwe Rosenberg, oddly, only with people freezing to death and having to make decisions about cannibalism.
The chief complaint at the moment is the aesthetics. The KS came with a ton of minis for buildings and workers, and though they look fantastic on the table they actually hinder the gameplay. The worker minis make the supply area too cramped if you have more than ten, and when you throw on engineer or worker children it becomes hard to even see who you have available at a glance. The building minis are difficult to tell apart too, and they don’t replace the building tiles that you use normally, they just sit on top of them, so it just increases the length of the game while you hunt for the right one. The big generator tower, which does serve a gameplay element (you literally drop coal into it, and anything that falls to the bottom kerplunk style increases the risk of malfunctioning), also gets really in the way, but luckily they added board options so you can store it off to the side and treat its board area as the token store. Kiiiiind of feels like it could have been swapped out with dice rolls if I’m being honest.
And as above it’s also got some of the worst storage I’ve seen in a recent game. The most they have is a little bit of card organization, but by the designer’s own admittance, it can’t take sleeved cards anyway. Same was true of TWoM though, the in box storage of that is absolutely garbage.

I coded a basic game based on Blood Bowl. I'm very proud of it lol. I'm 40 and have zero programming experience. scratch.mit.edu/projects/768552709/It's pretty basic: choose a Power Up then just roll the dice. Get to the End Zone to score a touchdown and win. There are 3 possible Ratings depending on how well you do/lucky you are. Push = advance Pow = strong advance Both Down = both down (unless you have Block skill) Dodge = Defender dodged Skull = Lose a life (replenished with Apothecary)

We played through the ISS Vanguard tutorial and ship phase tonight.
Oh my. This is totally my jam.
It’s basically Mass Effect 1 feat. Star Trek: The Board Game

It is very good. Though I might restart my campaign as it took me until the second planet after the tutorial to realize I messed up both ranking up and buying more dice (I was spending the successes to rank up, only ranking up one character, and only buying dice for one station).
Are you using the app to track things? It’s super well done, full voice overs for the campaign log.

Bit of a long shot, but I’m trying to source a copy of Sherman Leader (shipping to Ireland); if any of you guys know someone who wants to sell, let me know.
I’ve tried the BGG marketplace but no joy there (haven’t tried the listings that are more than 4 years old as I assume they’ll be a waste of time). I’m not a board gamer (yet) so I’m not really up on where else to try - the online uk shops I’ve looked at are out of stock.

Expensive hobby this, eh?

There's a Kickstarter for a reprint of Lords of Vegas plus new expansion.
Don't often do Kickstarters but this might be a rare exception.
edit - Ah, ffs, only shipping to the American continent.
Saves me a hundred quid or so I guess.

Finally reached the halfway point of Blackstone Fortress last night with my 'regular' group.
We've only been playing it for about 4 years! 😅

I've got a lot of birthday money to spend on board games - that ISS Vanguard looks tasty, shame it's not on general sale at the minute.
Played an afternoon of Sleeping Gods over the weekend and really liked it - only played with one other person but felt that was the sweet spot in all honesty.
Big 6-player TI4 game tomorrow, can't wait!

I have some amazon vouchers from worl and want a new solo game to break up my solo Gloomhaven and Arkham Horror LCG campaigns.
Currently eyeing up Descent and Journeys in Middle Earth. Just wondering if anyone has any alternatives to look at? I want something fairly simple to play, JIME I think fits the bill, despite the number of components the test game I played last year was quite simple.
I have Mansions of Madness but that is a bit rubbish really, so hoping for a better app driven game.

I love Descent but I've never played it solo.
Recently starting playing Sleeping Gods with a friend and imagine that'll work really well solo.

I enjoyed playing the Lord of the Rings: The Card Game solo. It has less of a narrative focus than Arkham, so found it much more replayable. Which is a good thing, as the core set scenarios are fecking hard, so needed to be repeated a few times. Also found some really good custom scenarios that were designed for new core set players.
Picked it up shortly before they announced the revised core, so not sure if they have made it easier or not.
Never did get around to buying some more sets for that and really should.

Imperial Assault is fucking brilliant solo.
The app is well designed, gameplay is tight and theme is good. Most important is it seems smaller than LOTR / gloomhaven etc so you can actually fit the map on a normal table.
Did the tutorial yesterday and first 2 missions today and had an absolute blast. The minis are great as well. Only thing I don't like is it can be a bit unfair at times, notably if you open a door as last action the 10 enemies behind it appear and all get to act and fuck you over. But I suppose it is case of learning the general tactics etc so didn't bother me too much.
Highly highly recommended

Shit. Thanks for letting me know. I may use my credit card and quickly pick up the expansions now. They aren't too expensive £35) so look like decent value.

Skyrim Kickstarter finally arrived today. Only given the tutorial a whirl but so far it’s pretty good, very very thematic and seems to have a load of content.

I received a hefty package a few days ago - turned out to be Skyrim. The odd thing is I never ordered it. Back when it was first announced on Gamefound I did try to make a pledge, but my bank sent me a verification code I couldn't access, so I gave up. And then forgot about it - it was ages ago after all.
It's listed in my GF account as "awaiting payment" so I wrote to them asking what was going on and how to proceed. Not heard a word. Now I'm not sure what the hell to do. I've just got it sitting here unopened.

FREE GAME! I've just ordered My City and Cockroach Poker for the family Christmas. Should be accessible enough for the norms, and entertaining enough for the gaming veteran(s). Quite excited. I had to downscale my board games dramatically a couple of years back, so it's nice to have a toe back in the pond again even if only with some relatively light titles.

Revised has more cards, so it saves buying multiple cores and you get some boon/burden cards to help with the later quests. Dark of Mirkwood has just popped back into stock, which contains the quests from the collectors edition they did a few years back and it’s a nicer quest for early on. Also, the Fellowship box has launched which gives you the first two Saga LOTR boxes which are some of the best. Think that about covers it.

Picked up Heat Pedal to the Metal as the family Xmas game for this year. Man, it is so good! I think it might be better than Flamme Rouge, which is some praise.
Really quick turns, really simple ruleset, yet a surprising amount of decision space and just a lot of fun.

FREE GAME! I've just ordered My City and Cockroach Poker for the family Christmas. Cockroach poker is absolutely mint! It’s the king of emergent gameplay (not hard given it has like three rules) 💥
