Yeah, I think it’s pretty replayable. You can campaign the whole thing, or play individual scenarios. There’s a 1 vs 1 mode in there too but it does look a little like an after thought.
If the Neil Patrick Harris solo game Box One has made it to UK shores I absolutely recommend it. It’s like nothing I’ve ever played before, and that’s all I’m going to say about it.
I am always up for a new solo game, and browsing amazon at lunch they had Jaws of the Lion for £36 and delivery same day. So thought I would give it a try.
Fuck me, I haven't yet played it, but it sets new levels of brilliance for me for intros and storage. It has plastic tray inserts, little boxes, a whole bunch of baggies. And even a fucking instruction manual on how to open the box and store stuff! After years of Fantasy Flight games etc where you just get a big box I want to give this game awards before I have even started.
Just skimmed the intro, I will play tomorrow, but already I think this may be the best value for money game I have ever seen.
Got one of my grails today, a complete mint copy of Arkham Horror 2E. Had opportunities to get it before but it was either “like new” or overpriced from an eBay seller, but this was there at my local store’s swap meet for just $29. Couldn’t say no.
Picked up Heroquest (yay) so going to wallow in nostalgia and use the app for solo. That'll do nicely. Zatu had it at a few quid off, so got the game plus expansions. The insert tray for the figs is a piece of shite it must be said. The quicker a custom foam insert appears the better.
Also Terraforming Mars Ares (arse) Expedition. Should be a crack!
I liked Ares Expedition when I played it. I don't know if I'm itching to play it more though, because while I can definitely see the audience for 'TM Lite', I don't think that audience includes me.
There’s even more Batman elsewhere. DKR is in the living room, DC Deck Builder is tucked away somewhere in there. Season 3 KS for Gotham City Chronicles launches in a couple of weeks too.
Yeah, new missions, redone rulebook, full solo/co-op mode. May 24th launch. I’m hopeful they’ll just reuse the solo/co-op implementation from Conan as that was really well done.
The Elder Gods smile upon me. After scoring AH2e at the weekend, I go visit a pokey out of the way game store this evening and they had these three, still in shrink, for rrp:
Almost tempted to keep them that way as they’re already fetching pretty high prices.
Well that was super. Moved to Bournemouth yesterday, today found a local friendly board game shop and they were doing a Magic the Gathering competition tonight so I decided to join in.
First time I have played MtG in 15 years but as sealed starter decks I stood a chance. Came 13th out of 26 which was nice, but nicer was that on card I got people kept asking to trade me. Just checked online a d the fucker is worth £80!
Nice little score, I can't believe it is still so popular and so much cash involved, the game is 25+ years old!

My parents are moving out of the old family home, so are clearing out a load of old crap. They’ve just found my old copies of Space Crusade and Thunder Road. Look in pretty good nick, so have claimed those for the collection \o/
Finally got to try Impulse, a Carl Chudyk (yes I had to look it up, stupid name) 4X space game. Being a Carl Chudyk game it’s full of mad ideas that somehow work, sort of, but basically you end up slingshotting your ships around from one planet to another trying to find clever combos.
It’s a lot (like A LOT) of game for such a small box and it’s appealingly crunchy and full of meaningful decisions. It’s also hell to learn and the polar opposite of intuitive, with the same kind of confusing notation that Race For The Stars had (although thankfully not that bad…). It has a similar feel to Tiny Epic Galaxies as well, only with hand management instead of dice.
I like it, I think. Definitely going to give it another try.
We've been playing Talisman: Legends at home. It's fun but the missus keeps cheating. She just wants to win every time. I made some homebrew rules too.
By far my favourite board game reviewers, unlike most I actually get the impression they enjoy games and are genuinely enthusiastic. Guys I would like to sit around a table with.
Anyone got any other sites worth watching? Dice tower I watch but are more informative than fun and I find drier and more about mechanics than nebulous "feel" which SUASD nail.
Gloomhaven 75 on amazon today. Will be picking that up,I have jaws of the Lion but am stuck in mission 3 as I am playing co op with my brother who never has time. So will be good to play solo and for that price it is a steal.
I really want to try Gloomhaven but I saw it described as ‘all the bad bits from a role play game’ and that threw me.
Finally got Star Trek: Frontier to the table, it still shines (although I did accidentally find Riker on a Romulan starbase, everyone makes rules mistakes right…?).
I just couldn’t get into Gloomhaven or JotL. I wouldn’t say they’re role playing games either, if anything they’re a card puzzle game wearing an RPG hat. You can’t really freeform anything or experiment with play styles. Especially on some missions you are 100% locked in to a specific tactic to win. I also really really really disliked the “you’ve hit level x for this character, they’re out of the game byeeeeeee” mechanic, it just made me feel widely disconnected from the game, and in my opinion a legacy game should very much feel like “this is my game that I’ve made my own” instead of “congrats on opening all the boxes”

I tried doing an RPG with my kids last weekend, and it's really easy to get into waaay too much dice combat, which gets dull quickly. I'm not a very good DM i think, but I kept trying to break out of the rule based combat and get them to come up with innovative or fun solutions or interesting choices.
i guess when you boil and RPG down to a board game, you're going to mainly end up with something rule/dice/combat based.
Heroquest was a lot of fun (in my memory), but it was basically D&D with all the role playing stripped out.
I haven't tried Gloomhaven, and I'm kinda tempted by things like Heroquest (if it wasn't so expensive), or One Deck Dungeon, but I imagine that criticism could be leveled at most of them.
