I don’t disagree (not really a metal guy). But the “WHAT DID YOU SAY?” bit was too easy to pass up.

If Pantera had stayed together and Daryl hadn't been murdered, far fewer people would give a rat's ass about them.

Tbh I did kind of like Walk back when it was played regularly in the rock clubs I went to at uni. Good groove to dance to.
But aside from that song they're pretty meh. I did buy Vulgar Display of Power years ago and I struggle to recall anything from the album, apart from Walk.

Walk sounds like someone farted into a distortion pedal and put that on an endless loop

Yeah I could never get in to Pantera. Just thought they sounded shit. There was never anything there that hooked me. Sepultura was another one. Seen them live twice back in the day and they do nothing for me.

Thinking of metal, my unpopular opinion is that Kerry King's solos in Slayer are rubbish. Audio equivalent of "random bullshit go!"

I don't think that's unpopular, I rarely see him mentioned without ridicule of his solos

Same here, don't think that's unpopular, any Slayer fan worth his salt would tell you Hanneman was far, far, far better than KK...

Fair point, maybe it's not that unpopular.
Ah well.

My unpopular metal opinion caused one of my friends, an absolutely mssive fan of Nightwish, to stop talking to me for over a year when I said they were just Celine Dion for people who wear black top hats.

Well, I guess that depends on the time period. IMHO, Nightwish albums up to (but probably not including) Once were musically more adventurous and interesting than the recent ones. They, also, contain fewer "pop hit" songs, if the term is appropriate for a metal band

I like their newer stuff. Being into popular science and evolutionary stuff, The Greatest Show On Earth is amazing.
Tuomas Holopainen's "solo" album about Scrooge McDuck was amazing too.

Metal Gear Solid 1 is crap
It has some cool gimmicks for the time but as a game, it's not well designed or fun to play. Gameplay is interrupted constantly with no mind to the flow of the game at all. New mechanics need lengthy tutorials, either because they're completely unintuitive or Kojima just thinks you're stupid. I remember someone saying that the villains having backstories is something that's really good about it, but they're fucking stupid and feel out of place (Sniper Wolf). Most of the dialogue is shit and awkward. It's not even very stealthy

Gameplay isn't anything special but the story and characters were/are top notch. Still has the best soundtrack and sound design of all the MGS games too.
If you think the dialogue is shit don't try any of the sequels!

Yeah, it’s probably his least daft production. I liked it more than Ocarina of Time at the err, time, and I’d still rather replay it than OoT.
I liked MGS2 and 3 as well, but MGS1 is the purest of them all. Never could push myself to finish Peace Walker or 4 though.

There's that whole bit in 2 with the bomb disposal guy that goes on forever along with a lengthy explanation for what turns out to be 'walk up to things that flash on the radar and hold X to disarm'. Most games would maybe pop a small two sentence tutorial on the screen and it would be fine. The explanation probably takes longer than the actual job and I don't think it's ever used again after that

I do like V/GZ (even the cutscenes). I've only played 1 and 2 besides that. Apparently 3 is really good and Peace Walker is similar to V. I've got the collection to play on Series X at some point

But that’s something I hate about writing in Japanese video games. The over explanation of everything. It’s one of (many) factors that kept me from getting into Gran Turismo 7. “Ahh I see you’re driving the Mini Cooper! Built in the UK, with its blahblahblah and blahblahblah it’s capable of blahblahblah blahblah. It’s no exaggeration to say it’s blahblahblahblah.”

Revisited it about 6 months ago and its atrocious. Played some of MGS2 and didn't like it, never played 3. Then I fell for the Sony fanboy hype and paid full whack for MGS4 on PS3, I hated that game and I really put time into it (as it cost me £60). Finally I played that free demo/level thingy of MGS5 on PS4 and it was also pants.

2 is incredibly self-absorbed and pretentious, even by Kojima's standards but actually does have some interesting themes and things to say. But it's also incredibly dopey at times and has some utterly irrelevant bits.
1 is good but the thing that takes the edge off is the incessant back tracking. That fucking key in particular, but other bits too.
3 is the best game, of those three, more focused, and the cut scenes were used more intelligently- most are fairly short except for a few key moments, it feels like you spend more time playing than watching. Which is the exact opposite to 4.
I think 5 is genuinely one of my favourite sandbox games in terms of how it plays and how the tools it gives you can be used in different ways. Story is awful and unfinished though

“Games made 25 years ago have some mechanics that aren’t very good when viewed through a modern lens” is certainly a take.
