Oh, here we go.
Harry Potter is derivative and borderline plagiarist shit, poorly written and is very lucky to be as popular as it is.

I've never watched (or read) Harry Potter because much like Doctor Who, by the time I was aware of it, I was either too old, or felt I was too old for it.
It's weird for me to see adults talking about Hogwarts houses.

The PC isn't such a closed system though. Once the game console itself dies, there's a good chance all the updates are kaput also. There are workarounds but they're a pain in the ass. And once the servers go down, you're completely fucked. It's a nightmare for collectors. Can't get rugged on the blockchain, the future is now.

I hadn't picked up any antisemitism, but wouldn't be surprised given how many other stereotypes and tropes were carelessly chucked in there ETA: I probably wasn't very aware of it as an issue when I read the first 4 books anyway.

The trouble with this thread is that most opinions seem to have at least one person or more agreeing with them. Ergo not an unpopular opinion.
Thread's not delivering.

The only correct way to orient toilet paper is with the free end hanging against the wall. Much neater. This thread is such a good opportunity to examine one's own reactions to internet outrage. I mean, there's no particular reason why Toast's disgusting toiletry habits should drive me to incandescant rage, what they do in their bathroom has no impact upon me, yet I know in my heart of hearts that Toast. Must. Die.

It's weird for me to see adults talking about Hogwarts houses. I was technically of a right age to read it, but by the time it became a thing I was already well into fantasy stuff. And it felt a bit basic. I remember feeling hope that the Potterheads I knew would go on to read more stuff in the genre, so I could discuss that with them. But no, they just read Potter again and again.

@molararm yeah, when the first film came out, it was right around the time the first Lord of Rings film came out, and I chose the latter because it seemed more adult to me. I was in my teens.

The HP books were page turners. They may not have been Trainspotting, but you can’t read that to an eight-year-old.

Beyonce is an absolutely awful singer. Technically flawless, but musically vapid.
Football is a joke sport that is impossible to take seriously.
Dolphins have smug little faces that I want to punch.
Double Gloucester is the best British cheese.
'Manufactured' pop music can be every bit as deep, meaningful and artistically valid as any other style.

I confess that I haven't read the books, but the way the goblins at Gringotts have an awful lot of the same stereotypical features as many antisemitic portrayal of Jews by some cartoonists is quite alarming. And many of the same tropes too. Problematic at least.

How do you know they're badly written if you haven't read them Dougs? I don't mind them fwiw. The writing isn't stellar but the stories are pretty good, especially for kids. Totally see the point about the Gringotts goblins though yeah.

I've read chapters to my son over the years. It's so needlessly wordy. It's like she thinks she's being smart, but really it's just unnecessary imo. Not dissimilar to GoT, although my issue there was hundreds of pages on inconsequential acts or characters.

Maybe she found her stride in later books, I dunno - probably only read up to Goblet of Fire.

The writing improved slightly, but then the editing went down so it kind of balanced out.

I mean, maybe people choose opinions for that reason. But isn't it more interesting/fun to assume that they don't, and talk/argue about opinions as if people actually believe the things they say?
