The last anime I really enjoyed was Devilman Crybaby. The aesthetic seems designedto be purposefully off-putting, and it initially seems like it's going to be a fairly cliche story, perhaps with with tedious pervy fan service, but it ends up having a really human, empathetic core.
The og Devilman manga was very influential, it's pretty clear to see how it influenced berserk with it's protagonist/antagonist relationship being right at the centre.

Claymore was cool. It's pretty much The Witcher, but they're all ladies in white rather than men in black. Came out before the games got popular too, so the writer must have been a fan of the original novels.
Berserk was cool until the end of the first arc, which I guess is right at the end of the original adaptation. The event.. that happens. Put me off the franchise as a whole. I did have the game on Dreamcast though, which I think came out before the show was officially localized.

The event is unpleasant, but to it's credit the manga does quite a bit too move past it without diminishing the events, and it does look at the outcome and trauma of the event
The latter episodes actually really lean into the importance of relationships with others, as Guts moves past being just a revenge driven love wolf. It's a gradual, but believable character arc.

I think the last anime I started was the mecha Trigger one (can't remember what it was called). Loved KLK, TTGL and FLCL but just couldn't get into that one. I think it was the girl bending over in front of the boy in the mecha just seemed too dumb
Hunter x Hunter is a brilliant fighty manga/anime. I was never into DBZ, Bleach or any of that stuff but HxH is amazing. Antangonist is a paedo though (but that's anime for you)

Some later berserk panels are easily among the greatest comic panels ever drawn. The detail which goes into Guts’ cloak alone, Christ. And what a tragedy that it will never be properly finished.
I absolutely love Akira. I didn’t think much of it when it came out - Fist Of The North Star was much more what I thought anime “should be” - but over time it has really grown on me. It remains one of the few films I’ve actually purchased digitally because I want to stream it whenever I want.
Anyway, an unpopular opinion: My Neighbour Totoro is a bit boring and meandering, really.

I was bored by Totoro the first time but enjoyed it the second time. It's not my favorite Ghibli either though.

I think a lot of Ghibli's films are a bit meandering. They're charming and usually enjoyable but they sometimes feel a bit wishy-washy. The artistry is usually good of course. But beyond the surface and ambience they're sometimes a bit empty.
*Charming and enjoyable perhaps doesn't apply to Grave of the Fireflies.

I'm not really a fan of Ghibli beyond Nausicaa and Mononoke. The character animations seem too exaggerated and lavish for me

I have no knowledge of, nor interest in, manga, anime or Japanese culture generally, despite an obsession with Japan in my teen years when I studied judo.
However, I did own a VHS of one of the “proper” edits of Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend.
It was…interesting!

Along with Akira (just caught it on Channel 4 late one night/morning and had no idea whatsoever what I was watching (similiar to the sexual content of the former) and some other random manga videos I got which probably no one has heard of now. The ones I can remember are Judge, Laughing Target, Crying Freeman and Project A-KO
A lot of Urotsukidoji has stayed with me and although it went over my head at the time, I get it now (they were raping them)

I feel like you probably shouldn't follow that first sentence up with an opinion about Japanese culture, but I know very little about it either.

PJ Harvey is fucking tedious And that's generous. That's the worst post I've ever seen, stop drinking or whatever would make you come out Sith such a thing. She's fucking incredible, an amazing talent, wonderful voice, guitarist, pianist, saxophonist and amazing, amazing songwriter.
