Talking of Pulp, Shatner's cover of Common People is unironically far better than the original. I wouldn't say it's "far better", but I really like how Shatner expresses the contempt in the lyrics. It's more effective than the way Jarvis did it.

Approximately 90% of the time cakes are claggy shit.
Ice lollies are infinitely better than ice cream. And choc ices are completely rubbish.
Roti is better than naan.

Ice lollies are infinitely better than ice cream Of all the wrong opinions in this thread, this is the wrongest. Ice creams are a yummy dessert or anytime snack; ice lollies are just a drink that takes an annoyingly long time to drink, and is far too sweet anyway.

Most ice lollies are too sweet, but the god ones are excellent refreshment on a hot day. Ice cream is just a bit bleh.
Mr Whippy is especially horrible.

I can't wait to see this forum on the news when one of you psychopaths finally cracks and goes on a murdering spree. They'll point to this exact thread as the flashpoint.

Talking of Pulp, Shatner's cover of Common People is unironically far better than the original. I doubt this more than most things I've ever heard, for which very reason I'm going to have to find out for myself.
ETA If you think a William Shatner-themed AI reading the lyrics to Common People without any regard to the expression or rythmn of the original song, covered half way through by a bargain basement Smash Mouth impersonater singing with a bit more verve but no more subtlety is better than the original then I suppose you could claim to be correct. Otherwise, it's a bit shit. And I'm not a huge fan of Pulp anyway.
You are fundemantally wrong. What makes shatner better is that cocker is an abysmal performer. The lyrics are quite charged and angry but Cocker's performance is just his usual disinterested camp moaning. He signs as if the lyrics are an inconvenience. *Anybody* covering this song would have been better than the original. It just happens that Shatner's is the only one that matters.

It's more effective than the way Jarvis did it. Exactly. The lyrics are about someone the signer absolutely despises on a deep level. Shatner sounds like he's snarling while reciting it. Cocker sounds like he's deliberating over which blouse he prefers.

Come on. Only ironic hipsters could argue the Shatner version is better than the original. Be for real, dawg.

...and on a similar but different theme: Elvis Costello's cover of Elastica's "What do I do now?" kicks the original's arse to a bloody mess.
The song is about falling to bits emotially and struggling to cope with the end of a relationship. Elasica wrapped that up in a head bopping vapid jangly guitar brtipop ditty. Costello's performance has genuine pathos and emotional weight to it.

Next you'll be claiming All Saints did the better version of Under The Bridge.

I don't particularly care about the Pulp version, but Shatner's is a clown show which has all the gravity of Paul Whitehouse doing Arthur Atkinson.

You can have pathos in comedic performances, though can't you?
You can be silly but still deliver a punch.

Not sure about Shatner's version of Common People but his version of Rocketman is sublime.

This might be an unrepresentative sample. But quite a few of the Pulp songs I remember are about women who scorned the singer in some way. They're catchy, but man they sound bitter.

His style of comedy is rooted in a faint ridiculousness which offers nothing for me. It's bad enough on screen, but I can just about watch him. Musically, I'll pass, though.

Shatners version is like a drama student trying to give the words meaning(he's the one who'd fail first year). Pulp/Jarvis, it sneaks up on you. You're nodding your head along to it, then it hits you that there's more to this than you first thought.

Suede are great, too. You can keep most of the rest of Britpop though. Then again, I like Madchester. But I was there. Suede??

Ironically, I "met" Mr Calf at Salford Precinct when he was filming in about 1991 or so. My mate wandered over to him (he was having a fag break, not actually filming) and said "that Paul Calf, what a bag o shite" and in fairness to Coogan, he laughed and did some banter in character.

The whole "Madchester" scene was fucking dire and full of boring bands. And somehow Britpop lowered the bar further. Also, Thom Yorke is a shit vocalist. And that spelling of "Tom" is annoying. The first paragraph is 100% accurate. The second should see you executed.
