Just bumping this because it really is a properly considered piece about all of this without being lost to news cycle noise. I dread to think what I would have been saying online around then considering I’d been on games forums since playing Quake 2 multiplayer and posted on indie and metal forums during the 00s. I wasn’t an edgy guy by any stretch but I’m guessing any jokes I made would need thousand word disclaimers about the context of those sites now.

Didn’t the American Pie films come out in that era also? That was pretty much promoting sex to teens Umm, so Porkys came out in 1981. Teen sex films are nothing new.

Plus it's not as though teens need to have sex promoted to them in the first place!

I feel like theres a bracket needs to be drawn around 98-01 when it comes to that whole American Pie, Jackass, South Park nu-metal, pop-punk bubble because its very distinct from what came before and after it. Even when the same bands and people are involved. If you see any cultural product from then you can tell immediately.

At sixth-form I had a T-shirt featuring a figure carrying a length of lumber, with the caption "Got wood".

It was a very specific Y2K centric period and this is why I always point to 9/11 being a massive end point for the cultural 90s and 20th century. I think it sent a lot of things in a very different direction to where they were originally going.

QOTSA, The Strokes, White Stripes, Kings Of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.. many good bands either started or rose to popularity in the 00s.

I think geefe might be onto something with his theory that 9/11 had a really big impact on the world. Worth considering.

It also gave us four Radiohead albums. More than any other decade.
A couple of them were even good.

All this '90s indie talk has left me with 'Good Enough' by Dodgy running through my head for the past hour. So... yeah. Thanks for that!
Yes, the decade in question furnished us with some utter bilge, but there were high points as well:
- The four best Manics albums - Two superb Radiohead albums - The two best Weezer albums - Pulp getting some deserved recognition at long last - Mogwai's first two albums - Four amazing Sonic Youth albums
I could go on, but this post has only served to derail the thread further still.
That Russell Brand fellow, eh? What a cunt.

Umm, so Porkys came out in 1981. Teen sex films are nothing new. Porky’s was an 18 when it came out whereas American Pie was a 15. But yeah still high school naughtiness I’d assume the main issue with American Pie if it was released now, would be the main protagonist covertly streaming his classmate getting naked, rather than the general teen bonking.

I only just learnt that 9/11 was the reason Frasier started declining in quality, so I'm jumping on the 9/11 was bad train.

Probably as I went to Uni in 2003, but I remember that being all about Franz Ferdinand, Blok Party, PJ Harvey, White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Arcade Fire, so it was pretty good. Then again the 90s had Pulp and Portishead so kinda wins.

Think everyone underestimates the impact that Y2K had. 90s was full of optimistism until that hit.

On 9/11 my Boss at the time had the fortitude to tell us to all (about 25 of us) to go home for the day and watch the news as he already realised the ramifications would be extraordinary.

I know someone whose boss did the same.
Admittedly they did work in the world trade center at the time.

I remember ab-libbing an extremely distasteful version of the theme tune to Are You Being Served at the time before we were sent home, with an American (previous New York resident) colleague sat in the office I might add. We used to look down on the street during the summer for any decent cleavages and there were several ladies with nicknames who we would glare at if spotted walking past the office, I think it's fair to say I was well and truly invested in the whole sordid attitude/outlook to things at the time. I'm ashamed to admit I was part of the problem rather than the solution.

You know when she talked about Zoo and Nuts and Danny Dyer having a column in one of them, I had completely forgotten about that but it came back vividly when she recounted his advice of cutting an ex's face with a knife so no one will want her. It really was quite a nasty time all prefaced with "it's a joke!"

It really was quite a nasty time all prefaced with "it's a joke!" I remember that well. Even at the time it was too much and Dyer got sacked. But what was surprising was just how quick people were to forget… he might have lost the chicken feed he got for that column but he still got his job on Eastenders and still ended up presenting prime time Saturday evening game shows on BBC One.
