And that's the indie end of the spectrum. Looking mainstream it was the era of Cowell. Popstars, Pop Idol and the endless conveyer belt of X Factor bullshit.

The 90s were fucking amazing and without doubt the last great decade, I don't even think that's old man waving at clouds with rose-tinted specs on stuff either. Although I would say things definitely started to turn around 97/98 with the advent of nu-metal and such-like, American white-boy frat shite signalled the end of rock being alternative and cool. Fred Durst ruined rock and Simon Cowell ruined pop from that point onwards.

I do think we underestimate the impact of 9/11 and the war on terror as well. Really created a pervasive sense of paranoia.

The 00s can at least claim the LOTR trilogy and the first two parts of the Nolan Batmans, and it was when TV started getting, for want of a better word, box setty. Most of The Sopranos, The Wire etc. Even Sex and the City was a milestone moment for TV series.

Mrs Alastair has been the happiest lady in Pinner for 20 years now.

00s was Coldplay, Snow Patrol Kaiser Chiefs, Arctics, Killers etc That list is conclusive proof, if it was needed, that the 00s were indeed the worst decade.

As someone who had their teen years in the 90s can I be the first to say that "the 90s were the last great decade" is a load of old bollocks, particularly for music and film.

The 2000s indie landfill. 100s of bands called The [something] and every single one of them absolutely sucked. Im actually quite surprised Razorlight didnt call themselves The Razorlight.

I'd still argue the 90s giving us Creed, Limp Bizkit, Nickelback and practically all the Britpop bands makes it a worse decade for music.

Nickelback's biggest hit by far was released in 2001.

Crazy Town, Hoobastank, Good Charlotte... That's before we get to the likes of Cowell and Pop Idol.
(Just out of interest, I'm not arguing that the 90s were objectively better than the 2000s, I just think it's a stretch to point out a few musical artists of any decade and go "look! therefore, cultural wasteland!" )

Arguing about the music of the time kind of misses the point when you had the sexism of lads mags in the 90s and a tabloid press hounding people to death and the 00s the five minutes of fame nihilism of Big Brother and a tabloid press hounding people to death.
The mid-late 90s were probably more optimistic though. Geefe’s probably right about 9/11. In the 90s you eventually had the Good Friday Agreement and we were barely over the line into the new millenium before sweating while non-white was enough to have the Met execute you on the London Underground. Which is obviously going to cast a shadow over everything else.
Plus Deftones released Around The Fur in 98 but White Pony in 2000 so its a very close run thing.

Didn’t the American Pie films come out in that era also? That was pretty much promoting sex to teens

In my defense I was only interested in talking about music from each decade, not the bigger picture. I'll stop derailing the thread now!

Didn’t the American Pie films come out in that era also? That was pretty much promoting sex to teens First one was 1999, but I think the whole "sexy teenagers in high school" thing was really kicked off by both Clueless (for younger teens) and Scream (for older teens) in the mid-90s. I always think of them as "teen movies from the 90s" - the whole Election, I Know What You Did, Cruel Intentions, 10 Things, Donnie Darko vibe of comedies and slasher movies - but tbh most of them came out around 1999/2000. All of which might be derailing the thread a bit. What were we talking about again? Perverts or which decade was the worst?
