Paddington in Peru
As a follow up to the two greatest pieces of cinematic art ever produced it is sadly, but inevitably, quite disappointing. Not helped by a big Sally Hawkins shaped hole in the cast.
Taken on its own it’s a fun film with a few genuine laughs, a predictable but effective tearjerk moment near the end, and still definitely worth seeing. Just set your expectations, it’s not a patch on 2.

Bird - 10/10
What kind of idiot chops onions in a cinema, etc. Ouch. This absolutely floored me. Barry Keoghan is the face on the poster, a young father and drug dealer who pelts around grotty council estates on an e-Scooter. But it's really about his fierce 12 year old daughter, Bailey, who is universally liked by everyone in the fractured families she lives amongst, yet somehow doesn't fit in amongst any of them. She meets Bird, an almost literally flighty person who rolly-pollys in and out of her life. Together they search for his parents amongst the family homes that all double up as crack dens.
It's beautifully shot, equally grim and very intense. Bailey is completely selfless in spite of her years and it's heart-wrenching seeing the abuse she absorbs whilst her good deeds pass completely unnoticed.
I'm amazed it doesn't have less than absolutely glowing reviews across the board. Maybe it sung to me particularly as someone guilty of not prioritising myself enough sometimes. Top 3 of the year for me.

I've mentioned it before, but I "won" promo tickets to a screening of Tyrannosaur with a Q&A with Paddy. Couldn't get anyone to go with me so bailed. They clearly knew what I didn't!

WHY WOULD YOU SEE THAT FILM TWICE??? I love him dearly, but when I lived with him I once knocked on the door to his room, was allowed entry, and he was happily painting a lovely pastoral sunset while half watching The World at War in the background. And yep, it was the mass graves bit. |

The house I lived in during my second year at uni was two English students and three politics students. For some reason the English students had been set the homework of watching Nil By Mouth. When I got home in the afternoon one of them was watching it by himself. Then in the evening we all sat down as a group of five lads and watched it together.
So the first guy had watched it twice in the space of about six hours.
I think once was more than enough for most of us.

The Substance. What in the David Cronenberg, Dennis Potter, Stanley Kubrick fuck was that? Did it make any of the points it wanted to make? Or was it body horror for the sake of it, tittilating in exactly the way it wanted to judge Hollywood for being tittilating? Not my cup of tea.

Maybe a bit of both? I honestly don't think it's meant to be picked apart that much. It's a very silly film that takes a real world issue and then goes as wild with it as possible. A bit like Get Out really, which I also watched recently and loved.

Ed Wood, somehow missed this in the early 90’s. Watched it after a RedLetterMedia Re:view. 9/10 great acting, feels like actual cinema.

Wonka is fine but it's a big step down from his Paddingtons. I loved Wonka, mitigated by the fact I expected it to be shite, thought Charmine would be his normal vapid wasteland. Far from it, surprisingly enjoyable, for me at least (you miserable curmudgeons) P.S. Pure imagination might be the greatest melody ever, so there's that. |

The Substance - 8/10 I initially would've said a bit lower, yet here I am a week later still thinking about it... That last act felt like a jarring tonal shift in siliness, but as others have said I suppose it wasn't really all that serious up until that point. Excellent performance from Moore (if that was all her in crone mode ). The Apprentice - 7.5/10 Stan does a great Trump, even if he's still clearly far too attractive for the role despite the prosthetics and make up. Strong is absolutely fantastic in it. Scenery chewing stuff. Crazy to think that people have probably watched this depiction of a narcissistic literal rapist, then gone out and voted for him... V for Vendetta - 8/10 Scarily prescient in places as I think someone else said here. The news reel section in the bar was probably a scary snapshot of the future when it came out, but we're most of the way there now. Fairly enjoyable stuff anyway, apart from the awful knife fight towards the end with the laughably bad glowy trails. |

The way I saw The Substance was as like a modern fairy tale. Thinking about exactly how the body/consciousness swapping happens is like thinking about the mechanics of Rumpelstiltskin or Sleeping Beauty. It doesn't matter, just roll with it!

It stood out as they actually just straight up named it Gollum. I expect Moore did some of the performance, but probably the long shots were someone else |

I compared it to Tetsuo The Iron Man a few pages ago because it is very like those Japanese horror movies that just build up to an orgy of destruction and absolutely revel in it. |

Alien Romulus: 6.5/10
It's Alien so it is going to be entertaining. But the story wasn't very good, and the cast of adolescents were fairly crap. I can only remember the name of Andy (the Android), and he was the best one by far. New Ash was also good to see. It's callbacks galore, and despite me liking Andy his use of the Ripley catchphrase was unreal cringe.
Probably on par with Covenant as a film, but I will put it ahead due to Covenant shitting on the lore that Prometheus built up.
Definitely worse than Alien 3.
