Hotel Transylvania (SKY) It’s a hotel and it’s in Transylvania. 7/10 Giving a decent score to an Adam Sandler film that isn’t Punch Drunk Love or Uncut Gems? Not on this thread, bucko!

Wall-E (disney+)
Still charming, still looks fantastic. I think its my son’s first time watching it. He had lots of questions about the ruined Earth which made it feel like a much heavier film than it was 16 years ago. Very good, very much in the conversation for my favourite Pixar film.
Elemental (disney+)
Far more conventional kids film than Wall-e. Its big, bright, got plenty laughs from my son. The kind of film that feels fairly mid for Pixar but would be top tier for anyone else.
Starve Acre (bfi player)
Turns out I do still get free BFI Player through my work, I just had to relink my university library account with my BFI login. My son didn’t watch this one.
Fairly efficient folk/psychological horror that ticks plenty of genre boxes along the way. It does a lot of things right but I feel like the central characters are too thinly written to really care about them. Needs more character development and I’d have quite liked it to be more ambiguous about whats happening but thats just my personal taste in these kind of films. Worth a watch though.

The House that Jack Built
Matt Dillon relates the story of him killing a bunch of people, while walking along a journey in a very dark place with a companion named "Verge". DO YOU GET IT?! In case you don't, they literally spell it out for you in the last 20 minutes. Anyway, it's a modern Lars von Trier movie, so naturally everything in it is very normal and not fucked up in the slightest. You know, like Antichrist. I don't know how to rate this kind of thing tbh. It's an art film, with artsy pretentions to go along with its (very) brutal violence. There's some darkly comic bits, and a weird ending, but it's not a fun watch. An interesting watch, like nothing you've probably seen before, but not fun. I guess watch it if you liked/appreciated his other movies. Best avoided if squeamish. 6/10?

Psiconautas, los niños olividados, which the internet tells me is titled Birdboy: The Forgotten Children in English.
A Spanish animated film about anthropomorphic animals living on a dystopian island that's been ravaged by an industrial cataclysm. Birdboy is an outcast, struggling with (literal) inner demons and he's hunted by the police who mistakenly think he's selling drugs, but he also has a secret that might offer some hope for the future. And there's Dinky, a young mouse trying to find a way to leave the island together with her two friends. It's all very bleak, dark and horrible, but there are some glimmers of light and humanity. I liked it a lot, but it's definitely something you have to be in the mood for.
8/10 Why did no one tell me they made a Psychonauts movie?!

Practical Magic - 5/10 from me, 8/10 from my wife and daughter. Romance Witchy goings on with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, with Diane Weiss and Stockard Channing as witchy aunts. I was bored but they liked it, so all tht matters.

But, it did make me feel very grubby. Some absolutely horrendous scenes as you say.

In the Line of Duty: the FBI Files - 7/10
One of my favourite TV movies as a kid, so nice to see it pop up on Plex. The structure feels a little hammy these days, as much of the character narrative is these days a cliché or has been extensively parodied. But acting is solid, the build up has a nice pace, and the climatic shoot out remains an all-timer.

I'm glad that someone is making movies like this, but there's not many people I'd recommend them to. I'm not even sure that I like them!

Yeah agree Antichrist is better. I found THTJB a harder watch though; the supernatural theme of Antichrist made the violence somewhat easier to stomach as part of the generally insane unfolding fever dream. THTJB is just _cold_.

The Substance 8/10 It was great. Love a bit of body horror, and while we watch a lot of horror movies with gore, my wife has a phobia of needles so watching her squirm at all the injections was fun lol. I didn't really understand the setup with the two bodies. It felt a bit like Severance, as the other seemed to not know what the other had done really? But not sure. It got more crazy as it went on. The boob(?) coming out of the face (?) and hitting the floor lol.

Really enjoyed The Heretic. I expect some people will find it a bit annoying, as the first half very much is Hugh Grant talking about religion (and Monopoly) with ominous music over the top, but I'm very much here for that.
It is very on the nose and probably lectures a little too much, but I thought it did a good job of being thought provoking, funny and tense. It is getting boring to say it in the latter stages of his career, but Hugh Grant is excellent once again. Still clearly doing the Hugh Grant schtick, but it works well in the horror setting.
One flaw would be that it doesn't really go beyond being tense to being actually scary. It definitely moves from thriller to horror in the second half, but despite a kind of creepy figure lurking in the back of the house, I can't imagine many quaking much.
Off on Wednesday (as I expect to be staying up late with US election the night before) and see that the local has a screening of The Substance in the afternoon. Will probably finally get around to seeing it then.

Paddington 2
This is one of those rare films I would say is just perfect. I can’t watch it without crying.

Duchess (freevee)
Neil Marshall did some good films back in the day like dog soldiers and descent, Doomsday was cheesy but fun popcorn but seems he has been directing tv episodes for a while. All his films since 2019 have been shit it looks like. This film wishes it was Guy Ritchie movie without any style or the script. Turns out the main actress is his gf, which he puts into all his films now and her v/o are really bad and her acting is very eastenders quality. Philip Winchester (from the tv show Strikeback) is ok, Sean pertwee is either bored or didn't give a shit. One or 2 decent action scenes
4/10

The First Omen: 7/10 – Devilishly reaching. Immaculate: 7/10 – Sydney Sweeney goes through hell.
That's enough of the Antichrist for the weekend.

I watched the trailer for Immaculate on Friday night (before we watched it) and had to convince myself I hadn't seen it as it looked very similar to The First Omen. The setting looked identical to my memory.

Chaplin (on Prime)
I remember watching this in the 90s and thinking it was one of the best movies I'd ever seen at the time (I would have been about 13, and until then was happy consuming Amblin entertainment and blockbusters).
It's still a really interesting watch and well performed. When I was younger it opened my eyes to the world of Charlie Chaplin's career and how hard he worked. Now I'm older my eyes were opened to what a pervy old philanderer he seemingly was. I also spent a lot of the movie saying "oh she's in..." and "oh blimey, it's..."
RDJ really is great as Charlie, although his accent does go a-wandering every now and then.
A good way to spend a Sunday evening but not quite the masterpiece I remember it being.
7/10

I'm an hour into The Coffee Table...need a minute before finishing it off, the tension is unbearable. I know shit is going to kick off and it's going to be bleak as fuck...
It's a good film, but it's always hard to say that with a film with such challenging subject matter.

Music by John Williams 10/10 (Disney +)
A 2hr documentary film about the work of composer Williams largely told through his music and the films it featured. There’s lots of tributes and acclaim from the great and good of Hollywood and the wider music industry. It’s a touch schmaltzy a couple of times, but if you have any interest in film or music in general, it’s pretty much essential viewing. There are some incredible scores here for films I had no idea he was involved in as well as stirring plays of his big hitters.
Very highly recommended

Outpost - 6/10
Low budget action horror where some mercs go to an old world war 2 bunker and encounter long dead nazi soldiers. Worth a watch if you like this kind of thing and has some good actors, but it’s not a patch on dead snow or overlord.

Terrifier 1-3
Awful plot and acting that goes from awful to slightly better as the budgets go up. First film cost something like 35k to make so you can forgive it somewhat.
Art is an excellent horror film character though and his recent box office success should mean an even bigger budget for the 4th.
The shower scene was an absolute banger 😂.
Rating: I like watching clowns kill stuff/10

The first is an excellent slice of low budget genre horror with a good cast (RIP Ray Stevenson). See also: Deathwatch, The Bunker, Ghosts of War, R-Point I say excellent, it's not 10/10 for me (probably 7 or 8) but I love me a war set supernatural film.

Yeah it’s pretty good, but dog soldiers was a better supernatural example, and the aforementioned dead snow is the absolute king of anything with dead nazi soldiers in it 😊 Probably a 7/10 though, 6 was a bit harsh.

Genuinely didn’t like Dead Snow at all. Remember being really disappointed in it. Dog Soldiers is great but I don’t put it in the same category tbh.

Inspired by a few mentions in here...
The Coffee Table - 7/10
lolllll. It's original. I'll give it that. Like a super fked up episode of Inside No 9. I think with some better directing and script it could be an absolutely excruciating (in a good way) watch and classic horror. A great example of carving out an original film on a tiny budget.
