The End we start from 9/10 (Netflix)
Wasn’t expecting much, but really enjoyed this dystopian ecocide tale of a family’s fight to survive a disaster. Stellar cast and then some, but it’s never showy and Jodie Comer in particular is excellent. Recommended

Return of the Living Dead
"Do you ever wonder about all the different ways of DYING? You know, VIOLENTLY? And wonder, like, what would be the most horrible way to DIE?"
"SEND... MORE... COPS"
"LIVE BRAINS"
10/10, this movie is fucking great. Has been for almost 40 years now.

I just read the synopsis on Wikipedia. What the fuck did I just read?! Same. I love black comedy and horror but there are certain things that I draw the line at and that is one of them.

With all the discussion about it in here, I just watched The Coffee Table too, fucking hell! Followed Molar's advice and went in blind, but kinda wish I hadn't. If I'd have read the synopsis I don't think I'd have watched it. Fuck that was dark.
It's actually a pretty good film and despite being pitch black, there is some dark, dark comedy in there. I wasn't sure I'd make it to the end though. I'd give it 7/10, but would struggle to recommend it.

Ok I’m going in blind to the coffee table movie. Anything else recommended on Shudder whilst I’ve got a free trial?

Speak No EvilWell, that was a hell of a ride. Fookin' 'ell. I'm very glad they changed the ending from the original as that sounds so very fucking bleak, even if it is, weirdly, the more plausible outcome. 8/10

Quite a lot of good stuff on there, recently I've enjoyed: Late Night with the Devil Revenge (earlier film from The Substance director) When Evil Lurks Speak No Evil (Danish original) MadS One Cut of the Dead Possessor In a Violent Nature

I haven’t seen anything quite like it.

I finally got arsed enough to watch 1917 last night. I enjoyed it & found it quite moving.
My lad walked in and announced he'd watched it twice and thought it was great. I was surprised and impressed. We watched all quiet on the western front after his war graves trip to France/Belgium and he must have watched this on his own volition.

I am happy/sorry that I got all of you to watch the coffee table movie.
Now that you have a free Shudder subscription, go watch In a Violent Nature. You can read up about it if you want, it's not the kind of movie where spoilers really matter.

Psiconautas, los niños olividados, which the internet tells me is titled Birdboy: The Forgotten Children in English.
A Spanish animated film about anthropomorphic animals living on a dystopian island that's been ravaged by an industrial cataclysm. Birdboy is an outcast, struggling with (literal) inner demons and he's hunted by the police who mistakenly think he's selling drugs, but he also has a secret that might offer some hope for the future. And there's Dinky, a young mouse trying to find a way to leave the island together with her two friends. It's all very bleak, dark and horrible, but there are some glimmers of light and humanity. I liked it a lot, but it's definitely something you have to be in the mood for.
8/10
Unicorn Wars
Because I liked the above I watched this by the same director. It's a war/horror movie about militaristic, fundamentalist (teddy) bears fighting unicorns. Apart from some dark humour it's even bleaker than Psiconautas. Very much a WTF? experience. I didn't like it as much, but it's certainly interesting.

I was going to watch The Coffee Table but chickened out going in blind with the comments here, thinking the wife will judge me too much. So I read the plot and… it sounded ok to me, and I should have trusted Molar.
I’m clearly not right in the head then.

Are you saying that the film itself can be used as a coffee table?

Since I don’t have Shudder I read the synopsis on Wikipedia.
I can imagine it being entertaining in a bleakest farce of all time kind of way but I would never consider it being one to watch with Mrs Simple.

One thing it doesn't mention on Wikipedia is that you see them all together at the end as Force ghosts. So there's a happy ending really. The table is still shit though

I can see what it was trying to do but my god was that slow and boring. Zero tension, zero character, zero substance.
Zero.
