I will give my two pennyworth's on Prometheus (like its needs any more opinions)
Loved the scale of it, proper epic, but the writing was bobbins.
A vivid memory of Kate Dickie (the Scottish one) being so out of place, a terrible performance as well. I am almost at the end of a GoT rewatch and she was great in her small part.
PS
New page, lets take this opportunity to talk about the Alien franchise!

The shot where Prometheus spaceship lands, in HDR, looks incredible.

Now they’ve had a go at Terminator, Netflix should commission an animated series of the old Dark Horse Aliens run.

I don't remember Prometheus looking anything special. Maybe it did, but it sure didn't make an impression on me in the way that some other movies have (Dune, for example).

The way it looks is probably the best thing about Prometheus. Big sweeping drone shots of Icelandic landscapes, Giger’s Harkonen Castle dome from Jodorowski’s Dune, all that stuff looked marvellous last night when I watched it (admittedly I had just watched Requiem the night before which looks bad, cheap and ugly and distractingly dark at all times).
Its a shame Blomkamp didn’t get to do his Aliens sequel but I’m guessing Fox didn’t want anyone binning off the existing continuity as it would’ve replaced Alien 3.
Although the easy way around that would be to do what Dark Horse and Steve Perry did and just rename Newt and Hicks and pretend they survived a different colony.

Just do Dredd 2 and forget the aliens.

If Disney+ had been a thing at the time they could have tried to get some good directors to make an anthology series for the 40th anniversary instead of the IGN/Youtube one that we did get.

If you were REALLY cool like I was, you'd have had a complete collection of the Kenner Aliens action figure range, and will have made your own Alien 3 featuring winged Queen aliens, power loaders with missile firing capabilties, Bishop wrecking shit up with a gatling gun and a resurrected Sgt Apone failing to hit anything with his borked grenade throwing action.

I had the bull alien, the winged queen, Bishop and another alien that I think exploded when you pressed a wee button on his back.
Those figures were awesome.

I had Hicks, Bishop, two Scorpion Aliens (with exploding action), a Snake Alien, a Queen Facehugger and little APC thing with lasso arm for capturing xenomorphs. I also had a semi-transparent red predator that I think was called a Lava Predator. Apparently AVP3 would’ve been set on a xenomorph homeworld and feature a flying winged King Alien. So you could play that with your toys.

I think its probably a case of general dislike at it doing something people didn’t want (xeno origin) in a way they disagreed with (David/it not being a straight Alien movie) - then that sentiment being fermented and hothoused by the internet into massive hatred. The focus on nitpicky and easily explainable points probably points to that as people are trying to find additional reasons to justify their reaction. Eg “why do they run in a straight line from the rolling skyscaper of death having only seconds earlier survived a starship exploding and an escape pod crash, they’re so f’ing dumb” - probably because they’re scared and confused. I think bringing up the "why don't they run sideways" thing is kind of along the lines of that "this bitch is eating crackers" thing, whereby the film has been so continually dumb at that point it's hard not to nitpick the dumbness.
The moment that does it for me is when the two super-genius scientists manage to get lost in an underground cave system despite having been shown to have a magical computer hologram map that can pinpoint their exact location, in part because one of them is incredibly fearful and nervous, but then they stumble into the "egg" room and he completely forgets he's a big wuss who's scared of everything and is like "ooooh lookit the cute murder penis snake thing aww" and dies.
This is basically my recollection of being in the cinema so not based on the internet. But everyone from Mr Weyland and/or Yutani, down to David, down to the moron scientists had all acted so dumb for so long, running away from the starship was just the fuck this icing on the cake. It did look fantastic though.

I liked the 3D effect on the star map and Shaw's memory doo-hickey David was watching.

Actually, that was something cool with Alien Romulus: they go into zero-G, and whether it was the way they rotated the cameras and the big IMAX screen but I actually felt it playing tricks with my sense of balance. Maybe only the start of Gravity did similar.

Alien Covenant (disney+) I saw most of this quite recently so probably said something similar them but this is a second film in a row that doesn’t know what wants to be. When its an Alien movie is mostly good, when its a Prometheus movie its mostly bad. Basically anything involving David sucks and I quite like the rest. Apart from the fight with the crane arm flying platform thing it does still look good too. If it’d been a straight Alien movie of them exploring the planet and finding xenos there then that would’ve been a less ambitious but better film for me. As an origin story its even less satisfying than Prometheus was. Alien 40th Anniversary Shorts youtube.com/playlist?list=PLraFbwCoisJApbIN0n2WRyliwHo2nSU3o&si=kWZUgfZ6boV4vJUuSix short films commissioned by Fox and released in partnership with IGN. There are some neat ideas in a couple of them but given they’re only ten minutes long each its mainly quite predictable stuff. Specimen is probably my favourite as it manages to actually achieve a little tension. Alien Isolation: Digital Series youtube.com/playlist?list=PLraFbwCoisJD7enpMMe9ZD6-Y_sA8xMYE&si=VeWQkJF264XfZ3bZAnother IGN partnership from around the time of the 40th anniversary. Its made up of cutscenes and in-game footage combined with new bits of audio and animation to tie it together. Anything taken from the game looks decent and any new footage of Amanda on Sevastapol looks absolutely horrendous. I’m not quite sure why they bothered making this, and as the commentators on every episode will remind you - IGN hated Isolation, gave it a terrible review and is blamed by a lot of fans as the reason it didn’t sell or get a sequel.

I prefer Covenant to Prometheus. It at least commits fully to being an Alien film, and it does feel more coherent.
When I was going on about if Prometheus is an alien film or not a few posts back, I meant that I don't even know if they intended it to be in the Alien Universe at all, let a lone be an Alien Film if you know what I mean. There's a distinct plot strand (ancient gods in space) that is totally independent of anything alien related and could be based it's own universe (or even, say, in The Thing's universe). Reference to Wayland could just be generic "evil corporate suits" and don't really add anything of impact.
Covenant actually commits to the bit and has aliens in an alien film.

I dislike it primarily because it doubles down on everything people complained about in Prometheus in such an aggressive ‘yeah? Fuck you!’ way that it almost felt spiteful.
I just cannot get over how fucking stupid everyone is and it feels deliberate. It almost renders the entire movie unwatchable for me.

Watching them back-to-back I think Prometheus is probably the more consistent film, even if it could be set in any universe. Covenant has bits that are better than Prometheus and bits that are worse but has a smell around it that makes me think the bad bits are the movie Ridley Scott really wanted to make.
I’d probably give them both 7/10s overall though.

They both have those moments where people just walk off and do something unbelievably stupid without telling anyone. Which I know can be said of most horror movies. But I seem to remember some egregious moments in both. Do not spend time alone with a clearly psychotic android and if there's a fucking alien locked in one of the rooms mention it to other people.

There's nothing controversial about Salt, it's just a decent action thriller movie, end of story.

I liked it, other people (especially Tonka) didn't like it, and because internet that turned into me loving it vs. other people thinking it was a blight on human civilisation.

Isn't Salt basically a female-led Taken?
[Edit] Maybe more of a female-led Bourne, but I think it came out closer to Taken

November (on a streaming)
A weirdo Estonian fairy tale in black and white, about a medieval family and magic and flying robot workers who are powered by souls received from the Devil.
It's very strange, and even at the best of times I wasn't 100% sure what was going on. But visually it's great, and I always like hearing folklore from places I don't know much about.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 8/10 Not the best Batman film but it is good and unlike a lot of animated series -> film it doesn’t just feel like a normal episode that’s been padded out. I like that good relationship with his parents and their death is more fleshed out and better done than most of the other versions. interesting. So are you looking at it in the broader sense of Batman films or just in terms of animated ones? I always liked it. But there’s a lot of animated output from DC I haven’t seen. Really miss Mark Hamill being Joker. Batman films in general. It’s easily one of the better ones, and in the top 5. I’ve seen several of the animated ones too, it’s the best of them.

I have seen that one. Strange decision to basically stitch two stories together.
The Killing Joke story is quite marmite among fans, anyway. The one thing it definitely does right is the “Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another… If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice” line.
