The boy and his mate (14 and 15 respectively) just got turned away from Deadpool as they didn't have passports. I did warn them...he does look 15 but did suspect our local cinema would be quite strict! Rookie mistake. Also book tickets at the same time for any movie 12a or under and then just go into deadpool screen.

He's a QPR fan, he's used to it. Sad but true, on every level They were slightly better, but certainly not enough. He did himself a disservice letting the cut versions exist TBH

Godzilla minus one.
I like schlocky godzilla flicks, and i like b-movies. Therefore, i liked this. 😀
Enjoyed it, despite some of the ott melodrama.

I watched Crazy, Stupid, Love (Netflix) last night
I had seen it before but I read a review somewhere recently claiming it was a very well made, intelligent comedy
And you know what? It is
I underrated it the first time round for sure. An excellent cast, well written, well acted and reasonably funny at times
I’m going to buy a nice suit tomorrow and start hanging around in American bars

Smile - 2/10
Terrible rehash of It Follows/Ringu type films. Awful acting, naff storyline strung out over 2 hours somehow, crappy production. Not even charmingly bad, just plain shit.

Wicked Little Letters (netflix)
What an absolute delight. Jessie Buckley, Olivia Coleman and a stacked cast of British comic actors in a charming film about a small town where someone has been sending offensive letters. Its funny, charming, everyone delivers and its only 100 minutes long including credits. What a breath of fresh air.

Deadpool & Wolverine
Not as good as the first two, but still very, very (very) enjoyable. Saw this together with my youngest son (he's 17) and we both had a blast.

Watched a fair amount of bangers recently:
The Masque of The Red Death (Blu-ray) - 4/5
RIP Roger Corman.
The Devil Wears Prada (Netflix) - 2.5/5
The Noughties were truly wild. Anne Hathaway is fat, apparently, and the climax of the film is that she managed to drop a dress size.
One From the Heart (Blu-ray) - 4.5/5
One Francis Ford Coppola's many great follies. A lot like his Dracula, technically mind-blowing and completely nuts.
Presumed Innocent (DVD) - 3.5/5
90s courtroom dramas just hit different. Harrison Ford, Raul Julia, Gretta Scacchi, Bonnie Bedelia (all HOT) and Brian Dennehy.
Yakuza Graveyard (Blu-ray) - 4/5
Fukasaku (Battle Royale) gangster fun.
The Holdovers (Blu-ray) - 4/5
A pretty great Christmas movie.
In Bed With Madonna (DVD) - 3/5
She's mad. The musical scenes are phenomenal. To say attitudes have shifted somewhat would be a huge understatement. Truly shocking scene about halfway through were one of her staff is apparently brutally date raped and absolutely no one cares. The fact this happened, let alone gets left in the film is really grim.
Nope (Blu-ray) - 4/5
Please never change, Jordan Peele. Such a refreshing and wilfully bonkers blockbuster, that although never quite satisfied me, kept me completely gripped and entertained throughout.

A Quiet Place: Day One - 7.5/10
I quite enjoyed that. It's totally unnecessary as most prequels are, but it's got a decent amount of heart. Frodo was obviously phenomenal. An Oscar-worthy performance! The guy looks distractingly like an AI generated love child of Robert Downey Jr and Andy Serkis. Took me ages to realise I knew him from Stranger Things.
Red Eye - 6/10
It's OK I guess... Murphy feels quite wasted in it, but gives a totally OTT scenery chewing performance as the baddie. Despite some of the more modern tech, it somehow feels quite dated. (more like a 1995 film than a 2005 one)

Rebel Moon Part 1 Directors Cut - 7/10
It is a lot better than the original version and the R rated action is genuinely very good. The acting and script are still bobbins but I was entertained through out and the movie is now coherent. Also the world building and constant planet hopping seem much improved.
I'm a bit worried about part 2 directors cut as it's all based on the moon farm, so will be interesting to see if it works...

I didn’t watch the other versions, figuring I would wait for the DCs but I have hovered over it a couple of times and bottled it at the thought of committing six and a half fucking hours to two critically panned movies. So I watched:
Ultraman: Rising - a CGI kids movie of Ultraman, for some reason. It’s actually surprisingly solid and has some nice nods to the lore and whatnot but doesn’t get too hung up on it.

Me and the fam watched the second of the new Planet of the Apes films. (Dawn, Rise? What's the first one? I keep getting confused). Anyway. The one with Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke. Enjoyed it more than the first one but both films so far have been really good. Not sure why we've never bothered with them before. Will give it a week or so then watch the next one. The ape effects are very impressive.

Is that the one where the apes ride horses and shoot machine guns? If so, then yes it's bloody great.

Did they have horses in the second one? Thought that was in War.
Fucking excellent films, anyway. I'm tempted to go through them again. The first one is OK, but the second was a huge step up IMO. Finding it hard to drum up the enthusiasm to watch the latest one, though. Just seems like an unnecessary sequel because they'd ran out of 80s films to reboot.

I've only seen the first two. Wife wasn't bothered really.
Agree that the second one was a whole load better than the first

If you liked the previous trilogy then I would definitely recommend the latest. It isn't amazing, but feels like a good set up for future films and has some good moments of its own. Hope they do more (it didn't quite do the numbers it was expected to do, but easily doubled its money). Looking forward to seeing where it all goes.
I actually remember liking the first of the previous trilogy the most. The sequels I enjoyed when I saw them, but can't really remember anything about them now. I guess the fact the first was modern day gave it a unique feeling for the series (well, excluding Escape).
I was meaning to watch all of them again after seeing Kingdom, but only watched the original film and Beneath. Should return to that.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is well worth watching if you've enjoyed the previous ones, where it goes next is rather interesting.

The Bikeriders
Slightly fictionalised account of the origins of the Outlaws MC (aka, Vandals), based on a book written by a photographer who spent the latter half of the 60s with them and his interviews with one of the old ladies.
Interesting, but not amazing. Tom Hardy doesn't really add much a monosyllabic Chicago gang leader.

Also 2005 is very much dated now, it was twenty years ago!

KayWhat are you talking about. 2005 is clearly only 9 years ago!!! I just meant it felt way more dated than other films of a similar age.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (new one)
The cgi apes are really good and good to hear Peter Macon as one of the voices (plays Bortus in The Orville) it takes a while for the plot to get going. It does feel like its just laying the plot for future sequels. A good writer can set up sequels and not just feel like its just a chunk of a 7/8 hour film. Also the last part of the film feels like its copy and paste of the last film
Its worth watching and on disney plus, despite the gripes.
7/10
Significant other
There is a lot of shit on paramount plus but once in a while there is decent film. Small cast in a lower budget horror film, done well I did think
the bf when revealed to be alien killer copy is a bit campy and OTT, they should of toned that down

Prison
Weird horror flick with a young Aragorn, I mean Viggo Mortensen. It's short and doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I guess it's all about the atmosphere. It does manage to feel quite tense at times. It's not creepy enough to truly qualify as horror, nor is it bloody enough to qualify as a slasher, but it's a decent mix of the two.
The movie obviously hides the big reveal until the time comes, but the Amazon description spoiled it liberally, so I already knew it from the start. Thanks Amazon.

Fair Play - 7/10
Decent thriller on Netflix about a couple who both work at the same financial firm whose secretive relationship gets tested as their career ambitions begin to take precedence over each other. Eddie Marsan strangely pops up as the CEO and throws lots of raised eyebrows. Rattles along quite nicely though and is a cut above most of the straight-to-Netflix stuff.

The trailer for this does it no favours at all, making it seem like the whole thing is a subtitled political story. It's not, it's funny, energetic and highly recommended.
