A Quiet Place: Day One
Haven't actually watched the previous movies, so this was new for me. Quite tense too, some nice post-apocalyptic visuals and a nice score to go with it.
I did think it was weird at times how some actions conveniently counted as noisy and others did not, seemed pretty arbitrary overall. All in the name of a good horror, I guess.
8/10
Maybe my opinion would be worse if I thought it was simply more of the same. Can't say though.

I feel like I'd just let that cat go roam free away from me, the minute I learned what the monsters deal is. Love you buddy, but you're going to get me killed.

I thought Quiet Place 1 was amazing. One of the most tense movies I've watched, even if it doesn't really do anything new that other horror films haven't done. Not seen any of the others, as I wonder if the basic conceit would wear thin.
Based on absolutely nothing, I wonder if the first one you watch would be the best one.

Furiosa - 7/10
I love Fury Road, so made the effort to find a cinema to watch Furiosa. The movie felt somewhat disjointed, and while individual action sequences were enjoyable, Ãt was a collection of things happening. It has real Phantom Menace vibes, that sense that I'm enjoying some of it, but deep down I want it to be better than it actually is.
Chunks of it felt too fake, because of small things like Chris Hemsworth's performance being a little too broad, the lighting feeling off, unneeded callbacks, some terrible CG, showing too much (here's why she has a metal arm!), the big locations looking like (heavy metal) toysets, and it kept pulling me out of the film.
Having said all that, Praetorian Jack was great, both actresses playing Furiosa were excellent, and the action sequences were generally readable and fun.
Overall, I didn't hate it, but it feels such a shame as it is very close to being a much better movie. Which is how I feel about the Star Wars prequels too.

Out of interest, which bits of CG did you feel were terrible? There were a few bits that were obvious, but nothing I thought stood out as terrible.
I think the fact that it was more of a fantasy epic than a hard action movie maybe helped with that, as the slight feel of unreality didn't feel as out of place as it would have done in something like Mad Max 1/2 or maybe Fury Road.

I think I'd have thought it was better if it had come out before Fury Road.

I think there was something very green screeny about most of the backgrounds, so a lot of the time it didn't feel grounded. But especially the sequence where they were lifting the bikes with cranes in the citadel.
Even very early on when it panned back on her home, the land of abundance, it felt very fake.
It's hard to put my finger on it, because if you told me it was all real and it's just colour grading, that might well be true. But little of it felt grounded to me. Maybe it was a choice, that this was a history being told, so it was intended to be a little off, like a fairy tale.

And I'm not talking only big set pieces here. Sometimes just scenes of people in a location seemed wrong. Maybe bad CG is not the right description, but it never felt real.

I imagine you're right that it was a lot of CG, but I think the color grading and general cinematography that they were going for was pretty unreal to begin with.
It reminded me more of Lord of the Rings than Fury Road in some ways. (Lord of the Rings of course used a lot of real places, but also a lot of CG and color grading that often made places feel a bit unreal).

I still believe that our brains do some mental gymnastics when we know that things can't be real, so even if the CG is flawless, if we see - say - an alien city or fantasy palace (or, like, the Bullet Farm) it pops as "fake". Because there's no way it exists.
I think with Furiosa the "fantasy" element of it was bigger than in Fury Road, so we had more of that unreal disconnect. There was just more "stuff" that we know was fake - more added backgrounds, more impossible vistas, more trippy sky effects.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - 8/10
Watched this as a test of Tubi, which was alright for a 'free' service.
I think I last saw Henry the best part of 20 years ago when I was hunting out every retro video nasty horror film I could find as a student. I recall thinking it was fairly tame at the time, but this time round I found it a tough watch in places. The tone throughout is horrifically bleak. There is nothing positive in this world and the streets and apartments look like purgatory. That said, it really is effective. I feel dirty having watched it again, which is exactly the point it makes on more than one occasion. I think it's underrated and probably deserves to be held higher in the pantheon of classic horrors, alongside Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which it reminds me of as companion piece. Both superficially exploitative underpinned with arthouse nuance.

Tubi is in the UK now?
I've found the US version to be pretty good. Definitely the best of the free ad supported services I've tried. Decent content, if not as good or current as the paid services, not too many ads and a decent quick ui.
They seem to get a bunch of new movies at the start of the month. They also have some nice categories like 'Cancelled too soon'.

It's got Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet too.
But I'm never sure what streaming service it's on. Like is it Tubi, or... one of the other ones.

It's got Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet too. The things he does with his Hamlet beggars belief. You wouldn't think Kenneth Branagh had the physical presence to pull off such an enormous Hamlet, sir.

Beverley Hills Cop : Axel F (Netflix)
A worthy reboot and a lot better than I expected, it did feel like a continuation of the original series of movies
However taking about continuity, it was pretty bad in this movie - you’d have someone smiling on a shot, the angle would change, they’d be frowning, angle change back and they’d be smiling again. Not a big deal for sure but not a sign of a quality production either
Overall though quite good

Dune: Part Two - 8/10
I probably would've enjoyed it far more if I'd done the sensible thing and rewatched the first one beforehand (or at least a quick YouTube recap) For a longer film it didn't really feel like its runtime. Absolutely gorgeous throughout and some solid performances from an absolutely stacked cast.

Ghostbusters: frozen empire
Such a poor film, bloated cast, awful characters and has that sub-par version of marvel/wheddon back and forth dialogue at points with phoebe and melody. Nanjiani is fucking terrible, every time his character is on screen, its like nails down chalkboard, terrible "comic relief" character. Bill murray gives zero fucks and its just there for the money
It takes ages for the plot to get going and the big bad lasts for about a minute
4/10

Would score it only slightly higher than the third one, if only due to the absence of that fucking Wonder World jingle. Bemused by how much of the score relied on nostalgic throwbacks to the previous films. Definitely heard bits from the first two in there, but not in scenes where it seemed appropriate to the moment. Judge Reinhold doesn't really look like Judge Reinhold anymore, does he? No chemistry at all between Jane and Abbott. They looked like they'd rather be anywhere else every time the subject came up.

I really can’t look at Ghostbusters now without thinking of that bodycam footage of the police arresting that guy who was plotting to kidnap Holly Willoughby.

If it’s the Ghostbusters thing, the guy that was allegedly stalking Holly Willoughby looks to be a big fan. He had memorabilia in his house on the footage of his arrest He seemed more like a fantasist than anything but the report did say that he’s actually acted out on his weird fantasies before so probably deserved locking up

Interesting. Yeah, he sounded absolutely fucking insane. I can't really imagine what Willoughby was going through with this absolute mentalist obsessed with her.

Rebel Moon Part 2 - Fourth time I have tried to watch it, got ten minutes in this times before thinking this isn’t very me. It also doesn’t help that I cannot recall a single thing about part one, apart from when they get to the cantina. I wonder if Netflix see that i am trying to give it a watch, but cannot find it in me? I mean, I have watched some shit documentary series on there, and made it to the end. My bar isn’t generally that high. I watch ghe Ewoks films for flips sake.

Reptile - Netflix, 8/10
I loved the shit out of this film. After watching Sicario the other night I was looking for other Del Toro stuff and here we are.
A murder investigation that's slower paced and considered with pensive questioning and evidence scrutiny it's right up my street.
Feat. Benicio Del Toro, Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone amongst others you'll also recognise.
I need more of this in my life...

Yep. Think it came out this week. Downloaded it to my TV and was away. Don't even need to sign up for anything which is handy.
