Wicked Little Letters (Odeon) After watching the trailer this was surprising, it’s pitched as a silly comedy. A much stronger and deeper film than the trailer portrays for sure Well written, well acted and quite a few laugh out loud moments. Locations were excellent too, you could believe you were back in the 1920s If you don’t like swearing it is an absolute must watch 8 fucks out of 10

Dune Part 2. 7/10
I watched it as part of a marathon screening of both parts and that may have influenced the score, the audience was noticeably less enthusiastic at the end of part 2 (having applauded the end of part 1 and the beginning of part 2 it was completely silent as the credits rolled). The pacing felt off - the early part of the film was given loooooads of time (and worked better for it), the final scenes felt very rushed (and suffered). There were some imo poor casting decisions (notably the Emperor and Irulan). And some important departures from the plot of the book, which can be explained because of the change in format, but I don’t know that they worked.
Visually of course it was incredible, 10/10. But a film has to hold together and leave you satisfied and this didn’t quite. Whereas Part 1 was note perfect, Part 2 wasn’t, not really. So yeah, 7/10.

To be fair, the pacing thing sounds faithful to the book. Read it again not long ago and I was surprised at how abrupt it was - 90% of the first book is establishing and developing the setting and characters, then it races to the end in the final chapters. Still great, but not quite how I remembered it. Reminds me I didn't get around to re-reading books 2 and 3.

Actually you could be right. I just remember the book spending a lot of time establishing Paul as a prophet-leader whereas in the film it’s kind of like a switch flipping.

There’s a big timeskip in the centre of the book that’s given very few signposts, and is easy to miss (or at least oddly downplayed) as a result.

I haven't seen the film yet, just on a superficial level it sounds similar. I can certainly imagine it feeling like a weird lurch if the film doesn't manage to set up the dominoes and some pivotal events as well as the book does.

Tango and Cash - 7.5/10
Yeah its not great, but the first half is very good up until they get out prison. It seems to have been edited to death in the second half with random characters popping up everywhere and the weird 'Q' type character who makes James Bond gadgets and cars for Russell. However its prime Stallone and Russell, who are always brilliant, so it gets a 7.5/10
Speed - 8.5/10 Kind of the opposite of the above as this is a top tier action movie, made worse by prime can't act for shit Keanu. Fortunately Bullock, Hopper and Daniels are on form and the film is great.

In some respects it does a really good job of transposing some of what on the surface would seem to be the hardest bits to film (the whole Reverend Mother/Kwisatz Haderach thing). And the passage of time is about right. I’m not sure where it went from being brilliant to a bit meh, and it would probably be too spoilery to analyse it here I guess, or at least not until more people have seen it.

Dune 2: Dune Eternal Chalamet and Ferguson were good, Javier Bardem was surprisingly great, and Zendaya was... fine. I wanted more Christopher Walken though. And Lea Seydoux. It had a whole lot of plot to get through, and felt pretty overstuffed at times. And it was a pretty delicate balance to maintain with the whole, uh, intergalactic holy war thing. I know that's in the books, but the optics are pretty fraught these days. Anyway, it's about as good an adaptation as I could hope for. I probably preferred the first part overall, though. 7.5/10

Why is it surprising Bardem was great? He's great in loads of stuff.

I wanted more Christopher Walken though. And Lea Seydoux. Sounds like we mostly agreed except with this bit here, I thought they were both terribly miscast and dragged the film down at least a notch for me.

Yeah that's true, it's pretty hard to see past the meme when Christopher Walken does his voice.

Stuff like the film went over it's budget by twice the amount, Stallone being at the height of his powers so doing dickish stuff like having Barry Sonnenfeld fired as DP as he said he wasn't being lit correctly, getting the Aussie with the terrible British accent more dialogue because Stallone thought he was funny. There's also the film being edited within an inch to it's release date and messily the same editor was also used on Demolition Man. Russell and Stallone almost burning to death in the gun truck they were in and Stallone wanting a serious film so they got a serious Russian director who had previously an adaption of Uncle Vanya and left soon after because it was a shitshow and producers Peters and Guber wanting a more camp film.

Cheers Jambo, that explains a lot. Its remarkable that it's still very entertaining and a good watch.

There's also the mental maths you do when you're trying to believe that 40 odd year old Stallone was brother to 23 year old Terri Hatcher. Also Swayze dropped out of Russell's role to do Roadhouse instead. I think he made the better choice.

Saw a thing about what a clusterfuck the making of Spiderman 3 was. Almost makes me want to rewatch it.
Almost.

Zone of Interest 9/10
Harrowing and will live long in the memory. Very 'arty' in parts, there's things going on in the background you need to take note of and I'm not sure if it would work so well at home.I'd watch it again, but not for a while.

At least its not a 90 second montage Don't knock montages. If you need to show a lot of things happening at once, remind everyone of what’s going on (what’s going on) and with every shot, show a little improvement; to show it all would take too long. That’s called a montage. Even Rocky had a montage!

Anyway, I pretty much agree with all that's been said about Dune Part Two here. Even by Villeneuve's standard its first hour is languid - for a fan, that's just fine, but I did feel more time could have been spent on transitions and development later on. As a book wanker, it was an excellent adaptation with one or two puzzling elements to be discussed another time when more people have seen it. And it's clearly conceived as the middle part of a trilogy. I really hope it does well enough to justify the adaptation of Children of Dune he wants to do.
Also: Elvis is fantastic as Feyd-Rautha. And Christopher Walken does the the Walken whisper more than once. Had he suddenly and admittedly incongruously whispered "I hid this uncomfortable piece of metal up my ass for two years" I would add a mark to the score. As it is:
8.5/10

I loved the Harkonnen sequence too, though at times it looked like an arthouse European cologne ad.

Did anyone watch Madame Web? Or did the bad reviews put everyone off?
Dune 2 isn't out here for a few more weeks, and I feel the need for something a bit mindless to watch at the cinema. But that seems like about the only option this weekend.
