Monster High 2
First half is a bit slow, picks up towards the end though. Not as good as the first one.

The Amityville Horror (1979) - the first of like 30 Amityville movies which is weird because it’s pretty shit. Having heard more of the actual ‘real’ story behind it, I think the movies problem is that fuck all really happened IRL so nothing really happens in the movie.
A family move into a house and a dude gets stressed out. That’s really it. It’s just not very horrifying.
4/10
Bottoms - Highschool lesbians accidentally start a fight club at school to score with some cheerleaders. Very funny and the kind of wilfully stupid but actually very smart comedy you don’t really get anymore. I really enjoyed it.
High 8/10

The Pink Panther Strikes Again
Several great jokes in there, but next to the second movie the humor feels a bit more low-brow, with even more slapstick, random shouting, and some scenes that go on a bit too long.
7/10

I thought Bottoms was decent enough. It felt like it wanted to break out and be like Dodgeball or Anchorman but never quite committed enough to being that silly. Basically it needed more slapstick. Never quite got to the "well that escalated quickly" but it seemed to be going I that direction. The best bits lent into it anyway. My wife enjoyed the various feminism and literary criticism jokes a lot though. I thought it was an instant classic. Gen Z Ferris Bueller.

Wouldn't quite put it up there with Ferris Bueller (which is an all-timer) but I've not laughed at a teen movie like this in a long time.

I have two of them and I concur. Although that feels harsh on the youngest, she only just sneaks in there.

Asteroid City - 7/10?? Not sure what to make of it. It sort of straddles the line between incestuous hollywood bollocks, quality artsy film, and actual comedy. Maybe all three. I guess the B&W meta actor stuff was all an in-joke.

Argylle - seen on a cinema screen in a cinema
Matthew Vaughn is back and doing something that's not Kingsman but certainly shares a lot of its DNA?* It also shares a bunch of people that have appeared in the Kingsman films though. It's pretty funny, very silly and has a bunch of surprises through out all though one "surprise" seemed pretty obvious even before its reveal, something involving medical info keeping it very vague.
Can't really say a huge amount about the plot as it's all fucking spoilers really if you do, just watch it if you want a daft spy thriller and love Bryce Dallas Howard (I tick both those boxes). The rest of the cast is excellent too with Sam Rockwell being his usual great self and Henry Cavill clearly enjoying a bit of a strange role. Hats off to the editors too, the constant switching must have been a real headache.
If you're going to see it just to see Dua Lepa her role is basically an extended cameo, she's only in it at the start. As is a Mini Moke, been a long time since I've seen one of those and certainly not used in such a ridiculous fashion.
*Spoiler for the mid-credits scene that doesn't affect the plot: it's a shared universe with Kingsman then.

Bottoms (2023) - 75/100 - A very solid teen movie with treads a fine line between playing it straight and off the wall. Some cracking performances, well paced, and delivers the ending.
Saltburn (2023) - 60/100 - The more I think about it, the lower the score gets. It has some excellent performances (Pike and Grant in particular), and at the beginning feels like it might be trying to make a point. But it completely shits the bed in the final act, particularly the last 20 minutes or so - the ending is just a mess. It's not nearly as clever as it thinks it is and whilst some of the shock scenes are indeed over the top I don't think they add either character depth or help with the overall narrative.

I reviewed Bottoms a while back but I loved it. Thought it was brilliant in itself but also felt like quite an important film socially. That type of high school comedy even relatively recently has still felt a bit stuck in some quite old attitudes. Bottoms really did feel like a proper breath of fresh air, whilst also retaining the authenticity that makes things like Superbad etc meaningful.

My Neighbour Totoro: Stage Production (2022) - The Royal Shakespeare Company team up with the original composer, with Miyazaki's blessing, to bring animation to the stage with glorious results. Staggeringly good set design (and lighting) combined with delightful puppetry, great acting, and a delightful score made the 2hrs45 fly by and we left with massive grins on our faces.
If you get a chance to see it, do - highly recommended.

The French Dispatch (disney+)
I’ll admit being knackered and sick at the moment has affected my ability to concentrate but this felt very disjointed. It looked great of course but the anthology made it feel like just a bunch of Wes Anderson stuff rather than a fully coherent piece. I don’t think it helps that the shorts are all a little undercooked.
My favourite was probably the second story but it was a bit slight.

Aw that will be amazing. Wish my boy was old enough to go. This one is in Japanese with subtitles so there could be a few bored younger kids whose parents didn't realise, unless the visuals are enough to entertain them.

Argylle - seen on a cinema screen in a cinema
*a very generous review*
I thought it was very poor. The CGI is rubbish and overused. Two people on a roof-top? Lets CGI the whole thing. If you've got an unlimted-type card, go to watch Dua Lipa doing her dance, and then head out to watch The Beekeeper or The Holdovers* (which is excellent) *Which I watched at the cinema, the only person in the room.

Just as a heads up, The Holdovers is on Peacock TV, for anyone with a US sub.

A few more action movie reviews from my big font geek approved list...
Beverley Hills Cop - 9/10 (Netflix) Yeah this is still absolutely brilliant, no wasted scenes, great characters, peak Murphy and great action. I'm looking forward to the sequels as I can't remember a thing about them.
Air Force One - 9/10 (Disney Plus) I don't think I've seen this since it came out. This is top tier 90's action cinema with an amazing cast and some iconic action movie moments. Oldman's Russian accent is a bit suspect but he steals every scene he's in. Ford is brilliant too, its just weird imagining him (or anybody heroic for that matter) as the USA president nowadays.
Broken Arrow - 8/10 (Disney Plus) I've not seen this since it came out either. The forgotten mid to late 90's John Woo movie that was eclipsed by Face Off, The Rock, Con Air etc. Travolta is brilliant as the main villain, Slater is good as the good guy. The rest of the cast and henchman are great too. Its definitely just running through the Die Hard playbook but its done with real style and you can't help but really enjoy it.

Its underated and a decent horror movie, much better than the original.

I have seen it and, yeah, it benefits from knowing that it’s a horror movie rather than a biopic

Watched a handful of movies this week,
Barbie (SKY) - it was ok, reminded me of the LEGO movie a little. Was surprised just how little humour there was in it 6 out of 10
Elemental (Disney+) - thought it was decent enough but not one of Pixar’s very best 7 out of 10
Poor Things (Odeon) - watched it in an almost completely empty cinema, which was nice. One of the most original movies I’ve seen for a long time. Wonderful visually and whilst I enjoyed it I didn’t love it. I certainly wouldn’t watch it again 7 out of 10
Bottoms (Amazon Prime) - quite disappointed after reading the reviews on here. Was a pretty average comedy with few laughs. Marshawn Lynch was good though 5 out of 10
