Falling Down is definitely not an action movie per se.

There are no films with terrible ratings for the last couple of pages.
Ghost in the Shell (the anime one) 6/10
It’s alright but my memory of it was better.

IMDB says Falling Down is an Action, Crime, Drama which sounds about right.

IMDB is not always right, surely for a movie to be considered an 'action movie' it must have a considerable amount of action, just how much action does FD have? Sure he goes on a violent rampage (and then he dies) but compared to say ANY of the other films in clemfandango 's list it definitely lacks the bonkers action sequences we associate with an action film.

It's not an action blockbuster in the 90s sense but is still an action film imo.

I remember being a bit disappointed that Falling Down was about a sociopath, rather than an ordinary guy who eventually snaps in the face of the relentless frustration of modern life.

I’ve always found it and Akira kind of boring. Love original GITS manga and the Stand Alone Complex shows though. But the movie(s) and Akira both kind of rode by on their visuals.

Escape from New York - 9/10
Incredibly dated but still brilliant. Not a wasted scene, great camera work and non stop action from start to finish. Russell is perfect. Plus the synth, you’ve got to love the synth….
Can’t imagine what it must have been like seeing it at the cinema when it came out. Must have been so cutting edge.

Lol, no. You are missing lots. Where the fuck is Topgun? Speed? True Lies? Falling Down? Rush Hour? Try this IMDB link. I’ve done top gun, speed and true lies recently. Falling down isn’t really an action movie. Rush hour can go in the Martial arts category 👍 How about Last Boy Scout? Or have I missed it being on the list already

Akira (the movie) looks great, but yeah the characters are pretty weak. And yes, the story is too, because it largely makes no fucking sense.
Who are all these people, and why are they doing what they are doing? You'll understand if you read the manga, but on its own the movie is a bit of a mess imo. A beautiful mess, but still a mess.

In terms of cultural significance, tight storytelling and its incredible visual design it’s my perfect film. Obviously you’re not in that camp but for me it’s my Godfather (not literally, that was Terry “The Twiddler” Thomas).

They showed it at the cinema at around the time of the release of the 4K, as I watched it at the Vue. Was mighty impressive!

When’s the last time you’ve watched it? It’s dull as fuck, and the characters are annoying. Last week and I disagree on both points but I am sat in front of the manga collection with a load of Otomo art on my office walls so I am quite biased. Ghost In The Shell is a bit more 'of its time', I'll give you that. There is a reason why it probably became more popular as it evolved away from the slightly pervy Shirow source material and into a serialised detective procedural show. But (!) as with most things, it is harsh to judge it purely through a modern lens and you do have to give it props as a seminal genre piece. They really don't make them like that anymore.

Ghost In The Shell movies have been mainly disappointing. The Stand Alone Complex were great. However, the only true genius work here was the original anime. Seminal. Really had a huge impact on me as a youngster in the 90’s before anime and ‘japanimation’ in general were well known or even really known at all. It was actually Shirow’s other work, Appleseed, that got me in to manga. Curiously, it was in the magazine section of the local Asda that was carrying a big format magazine of the first one. Loved it from the get go but again, the films never did it justice. A real shame to see what Shirow is up to now.

Akira is basically "I guess you guys aren't ready for that, yet. But your kids are gonna love it."

Spurred on by the excellence that was Godzilla Minus One, I gave Shin Godzilla a go last night. That's... an odd film. An uncomfortable blend of po-faced melodrama, OTT smashy smashy, some tongue-in-cheek dialogue and bizarre tactics (bomb trains!) to take the big fella down. When Godzilla kicks off it's great, but the politics bits in between are a bit dry.
Still way better than the monsterverse nonsense- a 6/10 maybe, but not a rewatch.

As Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg have confirmed, they'd never even seen the show when they wrote that, whether that's changed over the years I don't know.
Also, as someone going through my first rewatch in a long time, B5 is still a fantastic series. The effects can certainly look a tad ropey and the DVD transfer isn't good a lot of the time (not seen the half-assed HD "upgrade" work WB did) it still holds up really well. It is rather sad seeing the intro and knowing so many of the principal cast is no longer with us though.

The intro is Enterprise levels of dreadful, though.
