Ghostbusters II fundamentally fails to make me laugh more than a handful of times. "I had part of a slinky but I straightened it" Nah, that's still funny :-D

Was it the first time you had seen the film or not geefe? First time in a long time. I caught a bit on BBC last year and thought "wow this is not anywhere as good as I remember when I was 6". So I gave it another go.

And to add to kal's point - I don't think any Die Hard sequel started life as a Die Hard sequel. Only Die Hard 5 was a written as a Die Hard movie from the very beginning.

To be fair to geefe, Ghostbusters 2 is shite.

The Lethal Weapon series could have used Mel Gibson chasing down a baddy while riding the Statue of Liberty.

The Louis Tully court room scene The court scene has most of the best lines in the movie. ‘Judishum restrangement order’ makes me laugh just thinking about it.

I watched Ghostbusters 2 at the cinema as a kid, would have been 7 or 8 I think, and still vaguely recall the trip. I also had the tie in picture book that was made with stills from the film.
It's entirely based on nostalgia, but it holds a special place for me because of that, and whilst I can see how the first film is objectively better I simply can't feel as warmly towards it.

"That blue thing I got from her" Honestly that is the only part of the film with anything even close to the energy of the first one. "I got my law degree in night school" "That's ok, we were arrested at night"

I find cynical people competing to be the most obnoxious over the top of a movie to be hilarious.

Did some searching and found a few images from it, this website had a few: www.childrensbooks.my/ghostbusters-ii-book-film-9780721412634Ultimately the first film is better, had better jokes and more witty bants, but most of that went over my head as a kid so I preferred the second film.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles 8/10
Never seen it before and it’s not bad, John Candy is very good at being annoying to the other’s character but not the audience which is very rare. I’ve confirmed I’m just not that big a fan of Steve Martin too.
I’m going to see how many days in a row over Christmas I can manage to watch a film a day without getting shouted at.

Saltburn
So… I want to say it’s The Talented Mr Ripley, but English and with some very, very yucky sex bits in it. So obviously I quite enjoyed it.
It’s long, and I won’t lie I was feeling the runtime by the end, but it’s got some good turns and nice details.
7/10

Ruthless People
DeVito, Midler, Reinhardt, Pullman. Weird to think I'm older now than they were then.
A very 80s farce, and it remains enjoyably silly in that comforting 80s way.
8/10

Heh, I literally just finished watching this now too, having never seen it before. In truth I felt it was pretty dated and too over the top in its farcical humour, but still quite amusing and watchable with a rather sweet ending - I'd give it 6/10 overall.

Die Hard(in the cinema)
It's Die Hard. But in the cinema. It was great, of course.

Better than Talented Mr Ripley, had a darker edge and darkly funny. Keoghan is going to be a star. 8/10

Rebel Moon Part 1
A real hack job. Impossibly generic. Like everyone else has said, its incredibly unoriginal, every part of it is taken from another established franchise - plot, characters, design, whole scenes. It also manages to move the story forward over 2+ hours about as far as George Lucas managed in under half an hour in Star Wars.
It feels more like its paced like an rpg than a film in the way they assemble a party but also nothing really happens for such a long time.
Visually there is some style to its design but the execution lets it down. There’s even a creature it in that makes me feel 90% certain it was just a reskin of something from a Harry Potter film.
However, maybe its just because I enjoy all the things it steals from but I can’t say I had a completely terrible time with it. I also think doing it in two sittings while wrapping presents helped given how slow it is.
Its probably the most entertaining Snyder film since DOTD despite being a very Snyder film.
4/10

Two rather different, but equally excellent, films.
Green Room
Back on Prime. Probs one of my films of the last decade. Tense, violent and an accurate depiction of being in a band. Probs more Nazis than I'm used to at gigs.
As good as Blue Ruin, slightly edges it.
8/10
Paddington
Bloody lovely. Not watching the second this year. I'll struggle with it. This will do. Very British.
Also 8/10

What a provocative and alluring film, somewhere between Ripley and The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Humour has never been so dark, watching it felt like being hypnotised by a snake.

They both make me feel a bit teary… had to stop watching it today because I was getting a bit emosh.

Ben Whishaw’s Paddington tv series is one of the vanishingly few good Netflix original kids shows too if you’ve got younger ones

To be fair....I have a pet theory about this.
This applies to a lot fantasy/scifi these days, especially if originating on streaming media, I found. You'd often watch entire episodes rolling by where barely fuck all actually happens. In ye olde days of broadcast media, each episode had to work on its on and both keep and attract attention cos wtf is tuning in next week unless there's something that makes an impact. Some bullshit streaming the background while you're playing on your phone....let it roll.
This neither disproves or detracts from the idea that Rebel Moon is shit or Snyder's a hack.

Black Christmas - really great proto-Slasher film, in which a killer terrorises a sorority house in the lead-up to Christmas. I was expecting this to be a lot cheesier than it was, but it actually ended up being fairly nasty little film. It uses a lot of the killer's POV, which I have to admit I thought originally came from Halloween, but this was doing it 4 years earlier. It works really well here, just as it does with Carpenter's film.
Also used to great effect is the telephone call motif, which sees regular disturbing and vulgar calls being made to the women. The almost animalistic sounds and bursts of violent, sexually explicit language is really unsettling.
The closing moments are genuinely chilling as well, leaving it all on a slightly ambiguous note.
Well worth a watch for a festive scare.
