I just love the way pretty much every problem is solved with a roundhouse kick. What a way to live your life.

Not all problems. Sometimes you have no choice but to do the trusty old throat rip move.

Cruella (2021) - 60/100 - It looks fantastic, it's generally well acted, and the story has some good twists. But it has too many acts and drags as a result, it overstayed it's welcome by at least 30minutes. And the soundtrack - whilst full of great tracks there are far too many, every scene seems to be accompanied by a different licensed song, often failing to add anything to the overall package. It's like they were trying to out do Scorsese but failed to understand how he does it right.

Disney’s formula for milking existing IP:
Step 1: Cartoon? Live action now. Once completed, move to step 2.
Step2: Baddy? Goody now.

A Haunting in Venice.
So Hercule Poirot is visited by Agatha Christie and invited to a Halloween party along with all the Americans in Venice and nobody else, because (as they actually say in the film) Americans invented Halloween and there definitely isn’t a much older, grander and in every way better Venetian festival which would have done.
So, having squandered the setting to make it more American they then proceed to ignore Venice for the rest of the film by locking the doors of the haunted house and turning it into a standard whodunnit. And yet out of the ashes you get a taut and rather good film, definitely the best of the Branagh ones. It’s actually feasible to work your way to the answer without some bullshit obscure knowledge and it makes for a satisfying watch figuring it out. I’m sure there will be some clever clogs out there who find it too obvious, but there were just enough red herrings to throw us.
Good Christmas film, recommended.

Wonka
It's not bad. I mean, it's got good music (some of which straight out of the 1971 movie, which was a nice nostalgia touch), a great contrast between the drab cityscape and the showers of color whenever chocolate is on the screen, and some good jokes too.
It's lacking something though. Maybe it's the sharp bite of the original. If you compare this movie to the Chocolate Factory, it's hard to believe it should be in any way related, except for the music. This Wonka in particular is a very different character for sure. Quite milquetoast.
But like I said. Still a fun, if predictable, movie for the family.
7/10

What a lot of these prequels miss is the care and heart that goes into the OGs. They're cash grabs designed by algorithm to hit nostalgia beats without adding much.

I wasn't really interested in Wonka, but the trailer looked kinda fun. And it'd be nice to have a fun family movie to watch for christmas.

It's well made for sure, and I'm sure kids will enjoy it no problem (it all feels very cartoonish), but it's a very by-committee film. Hits most of the notes you'd expect from a modern day kids movie. I'll give them kudos for using the 1971 movie as base though. I guess audiences today would be more familiar with the Disney adaptation.

Apparently he's planning a directors cut of sucker punch now, including reshoots... You couldn't make this shit up.
fwiw I didn't actually mind that film, even if it felt like a horny teenager's pitch that somehow got greenlit.

Sucker Punch is one of those rare films where I gave up on it before the end.
(At least it was rare back then, these days I value my time a bit more. Or maybe I watch more shit)

Charlie Hunman is so objectively terrible in everything he’s in. He must be a hell of a dick sucker to get so much work.

101 Dalmatians (1996) - 65/100 - It's really more like a 50, but Glenn Close is sublime as Cruella and plays a cartoon villain as well as anyone could, it really is a staggering (over the top) performance and raises the score. The dogs are also wonderful, as is a lot of the supporting cast who are all having fun with it.

This week in my pre-Christmas dash to use up leave before the end of the year was another trip to the cinema, this time for The Hunger Games: Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes. The film was as needlessly long as its title.
The first section wasn't too bad. Lucy Gray is quite a cool character, slightly wild and unpredictable. I'm not sure anyone really asked for a President Snow prequel and I don't feel his character here really sells the need for it either, but he is fine. A new character likely would have been more interesting and make things far less predictable.
Once the Hunger Games themselves start it falls into the usual pattern of Lord of The Flies escapades, with groups forming. The back to basics style of the Games doesn't really change that much of the procedings. Then when the Games end and it feels like a conclusion is being reached the film goes on for whole other section that must be another 45+ minutes. It almost feels like they were thinking of doing a two parter, before realising that people likely wouldn't be interested enough to comeback for part 2.
It is also here that Lucy Gray becomes less of an important figure and more and more that her character is just there for Snow's development. It is probably the biggest disappointment that this initially feisty figure becomes not much more than just a plot device.
There are some enjoyable moments along the way. As with the previous Hunger Games films, it is well put together and competently directed. The cast isn't quite as surprisingly good as the original films (seriously, just look at the cast list for those films), but they still manage to pull in Peter Dinklage and Viola Davis, who are both suitably scene chewing throughout. I don't know anything about the source material for this and perhaps the faults lay with that (which wouldn't be surprising, as I've always felt the original films were the rare case of a book adaptation being improvements on the source material), but overall it felt like it was something that could have been better.

Yeah I think hunman has lost any kind of accent he had and now has some weird 10 accents in one thing. His only passable accent is American.
He is truly woeful in most things he’s appeared in, yet still picks up leading man roles for fun

Stagefright (Prime - 1987)
Italian slasher about an acting troupe who are picked off whilst locked inside a theatre.
From what I gather this is the 4K version which looks great (particularly the films climax) and is from Michele Soavi who was the protégé of Dario Argento so has some class behind it. The film is dubbed but I had no issue with the lip-sync itself but rather the script and acting which is 80s cheese. I thought it was great fun with a killer running around with an owl head, some gory kills, great use of music and a climax that is tense and beautiful at the same time. 9/10
Shock Waves (Prime - 1977)
A tour group are stranded on an island and hunted by mutant Nazis that can survive underwater.
Peter Cushing has a cameo and the only real standout name but the film has this grimy quality about it that I liked. It's the special effects that stand out with the general look/makeup of the Nazis combined with the underwater shots and electro score elevating what is essentially a dull film about people being chased around an island. All the kills are water based which anyone with any sense would have stayed away from so are predictable. Saying all that I didn't hate it but it's a hard film to really recommend unless your after something niche. 4/10.

He is what he is. I watched Speed a few weeks back and he delivers every line in his weird way that makes it sound like he's recording each line in isolation and so putting full emphasis on every line. But he was exactly the same in John Wick 4 and Matrix 4, so I'm not sure he's 'improved' as such.
He's a bit like Arnie. It's part of his charm.
